5 out of 5 eggsReview Update

Pros: I wrote a review several months ago and complained about the speed of this device. The problem isn't the Buffalo device. The problem turned out to be my router.
When the router rating was 802.11b/g/n I thought that meant the LAN was as 1000Mbps. It wasn't the rating is for wireless only.

Cons: Make sure your router is 10/100/1000 for the LAN not just the wireless. You will find this device much faster.

Other Thoughts: I have these turned on 24/7 months at a time. No problems and no lockups. Never had to "reset"

5 out of 5 eggsGood as Expected

Pros: This is my third on of these Buffalo Link Stations.
The first thing I have done with them is update to the latest firmware. This takes about 10 minutes. I have upgraded each one with newer and faster hard drives.
This one came with a 1TB drive, I will install a second drive for a RAID 1 configuration.

Cons: So far they seem to come with WD green drives. While that is got power wise I find that the green stuff is slower than ice water running uphill in a February blizzard.

Other Thoughts: I have pulled the smaller drives on my first one and installed 2 3TB drives in a RAID configuration. Remember that you have to have at least one drive in the system configured to work by the system. When my newer large drive is configured/formatted I then oull the old smaller drive and install the matching large drive. After it is configured/formatted you are good to go. Just use the Navi2 software to configure the way you want the drive to work. Over 2 years and no problems.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not buy Refurbished Buffalo

Pros: Solving the various issues associated with these faulty products will increase your intellect and technical understanding of NAS solutions.

Cons: Refurbished is likely to mean repackaged, polished up and untested.
Error messages are hard to read but don't feel bad if you don't understand them because the error codes are often undocumented and/or meaningless.

If you finally get it working, its slow.

The USB input only sometimes reads connected storage devices, when it does it is extremely slow. Though this may just be another (3rd) Faulty unit.

I have returned this unit too.

Other Thoughts: Dear Customer,
When busy smart people waste significant time trying to get faulty products to work they don't necessarily have more time to write a negative review.

Dear Newegg,
When Buffalo send you a refurbished unit, you should seriously consider if its been checked before reselling.

Dear Buffalo
I imagine its just cheaper to do a basic test, shine it up again and hope that the next customer doesn't need to use all the claimed functionality of your unit. On the off chance these reviews are read by your staff; Stop wasting everyone's time and actually check the units that come back to you before sending them out to your suppliers. For my wasted time I will post this everywhere I can and inform everyone I can in my business (only 10K+ people) not to buy your products.

5 out of 5 eggsNice storage

Pros: This is my second Buffalo device, just a different model. I received the unit and powered it up. No problems noted. Powered down and installed a second 1TByte drive in the unit. Powered up and about 5 to 10 minutes later it had setup the drive.

Cons: It's slow folks. Makes a good backup/storage drive. Don't try using it for normal read/write processing stuff.

Other Thoughts: After the unit sets up a new drive you must use Buffalo's utility to create folders on the drive for storage. I do watch video on the drive without problems. When I stream to my media center via WiFi I then have a problem. My wireless setup isn't the best.

I recommend this for backup of data and media storage. Good price.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Removed the 1TB hard disk and added 2 3TB disk. Great capacity, and very low fan noise. Web based admin is fairly easy to use.

Cons: The setup of the refurbished item is not properly documented. When I received the item it did not work even with the 1 TB installed. It took about an hour of troubleshooting before I realized the device only had a Linux boot-loader, and no actual firmware installed. I had to download the firmware and install it. This would not have been an issue if setup had been documented. I doubt a novice or intermediate tech person could have gotten the Buffalo NAS to work, and they would have returned it.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy this piece of buffalo chip

Pros: None. This piece of buffalo chip never worked. You have to be brain damaged to even consider this device. If you need a backup device, and you think this is it, you are better off backing up to CD's.

Cons: This is a piece of buffalo chip and I doubt it will ever work. Numerous useless emails from their equally useless tech support. Many different fixes offered, none worked. Assumed I was an idiot and couldn't do what was asked of me. Thing entered EM Mode and never came back. No good way to do a hard reset. Buffalo Tech, never again as long as I live.

Other Thoughts: So I can't get a refund for this piece of buffalo chip. Support is pretty much useless. I think if I lay it on its side I could use it to hold bills waiting to be paid, but I'll never use it to back up my files WHICH IS WHAT I BOUGHT IT FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE!

2 out of 5 eggsGood and Bad

Pros: Nice compact size

Cons: Had to add a second drive

Other Thoughts: I bought this from Newegg as an auction. At the same time I bought a 2nd 1TB drive to install. As soon as the 2nd drive was installed the info/error light started flashing. So I thought from watching all the videos I could before buying it would be easy to add a second drive.... Guess my thoughts were wrong. So unless you have a good working knowlege of the item I would not recommend buying this.

2 out of 5 eggsGood but not Good

Pros: Great compact size.

Cons: Disk creation

Other Thoughts: I bought this unit from Newegg as an auction and at the same time I bought a 2nd 1TB Seagate drive. Got the NAS, set it up it seemed to work fine, but the moment I added the 2nd drive, the error light started flashing code 15, the error is slow data transfer, well after 10 hours, it's still flashing. So unless you plan on buying the 2 disk drive unit, I would not recommend this unit.
