3 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, poor warranty rules

Pros: Excellent form factor, rugged, integral cable

Cons: Integral cable very short (but long enough for notebook computer), Warranty rule where you cannot pay for replacement and then send back your unit, but need to live 2 weeks without drive...

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive along with my then-new Macbook Pro Retina, due to the very fast but not very large flash drive in the MBPR. I put all video, most photos, any movies, and other large, rarely used files on the Buffalo external drive (everything backed-up to larger HDs with Time Machine). Drive is whole-drive encrypted by Mac OS X.

So, it has worked solidly, and is small and light enough to take with me if I need it. A few weeks ago, it stopped working, After searching the web, I tried the slow-insertion-of-USB-plug trick to fool it into USB2 and sure enough, it worked. I copied everything off it onto a 3TB drive in case it died completely, and since then have used it (rarely) using the USB2 trick. Contacted Buffalo to told me there is no way to get a replacement drive or USB-3 cable. Actually, the first person I talk with initially said they'd send out a cable, then that the cable wasn't user-replaceable so they'd send out a drive and I have 30 days to return my drive. I received an email for RMA but couldn't complete the form on Buffalo's site, and called the offered phone number. I was then told that they don't do a pre-replacement with my drive, and I need to send it back where they then have up to 2 weeks to fix it or replace it. I'm not worried about my data, just about not having a larger drive for 2 weeks. Frankly, I'd trade a bit of quality on the drive for better customer support. Still debating just buying another drive (today is Cyber Monday) or getting this one fixed.

4 out of 5 eggsBuffalo Ext HD

Pros: I like USB3 backup fast

Cons: Didn't bother using built in software, just let windows 7 pro recognize it and load drivers, is that a con or me just refusing to learn other software?

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Encryption. Works and have not yet died.

Cons: Encryption doesn't work with mac.

Other Thoughts: Good item and have used it as a backup drive instead of the raid nas that are available. Less power consumption and light weight and easy to store.
