This review is from: BUFFALO MiniStation Extreme 500GB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive HD-PZ500U3S Silver
Pros: Front surface is smooth silver and back surface is non-slip gray. Entire case looks to be pretty tough plastic. Even the cable is ruggedized. Formats easily with encryption for OS-X and runs well as Time Machine. There are a couple of slots at the top where you could attach a security lanyard.
Cons: None, so far.
Other Thoughts: Tested it briefly on Win7 PC before putting it to final use as MacBookAir backup time machine. Worked fine in both situations. I was looking for a rugged backup that I could take on the road with the Mac. It has to be able to take some bumping around and still provide an encrypted backup target. It also had to work with a single cable that wouldn't get detached and lost in the computer bag or hotel. This fills the bill. I'll have to see whether it takes the real-life traveling bumping over the life of the machine, but some simple bump and drop tests haven't bothered it so far. The main photo on this page can be deceiving. The cable is shown in three different positions in a single photo which makes it appear that there is more than one cable. Not so. It's a single rugged 6-inch flat wire cable that wraps around two sides and tucks firmly into a small pocket when not in use. I like it because I can't lose the cable while on the road. If you plan to use it on a desktop PC, you will likely need to use the included (20 inches long) USB extension cable. There is an activity light hidden under the stowed cable.
