Avoid anything buffalo.
This review is from: BUFFALO LS-V3.0TL 3TB LinkStation Pro LS-VL Network Storage
Pros: Performance is decent, about 30 megabytes/second read, sometimes more. Write is in the mid 20's. Gigabit or high speed wireless (450Mb+) a must. Included extensions are decent, but the only way to get more is through complicated hacking that was too time consuming for me to do, and I usually do that sort of thing
Cons: XFS file system. This is the deal breaker. All buffalo NAS devices use it. Do not trust your files to the XFS file system. Why? Because if your device unexpectedly powers off, there's a significant chance you will lose data. For me, the linkstation froze during a normal shutdown procedure, and I had to unplug it. Upon plugging it back in, it did a disk check and then indicated the drive was bad. I had a hell of a time trying to mount the drive, (XFS is not readable on most operating systems, only on certain versions of linux like slax); I ended up figuring out that the file system had degraded and is now raw. I am still attempting to recover the files. Be aware that if you send your linkstation in for warranty repair, you will not get your files recovered.
Other Thoughts: At this point I am considering buying a diskless synology NAS and putting the Western Digital Green drive that I pulled from this linkstation into the synology nas. When the recovory finished I will likely have hundreds of thousands of unnamed files, so it will be difficult to figure out which ones to save. Overall, buffalo was a lot more trouble than it was worth.
