1 out of 5 eggsPoor Product Poor Service Don't buy!

Pros: Inexpensive NAS device.

Cons: The unit I purchased suffers from either a firmware or hardware problem. It will sit on the network fine for days, but start copping files to it and it will drop it's connection and require power cycling to get it back up and running.

Tech support responded to the first email I sent them with a suggestion that didn't work and has ignored me since.

Manufacturer Response:

Please send me an email with your conact info so we could trouble shoot the device. You should also check your connections, it is possible that a loose cable could be the culprit.

thanks

2 out of 5 eggsGreat while it worked...

Pros: Cheap, good features, easy to use

Cons: Unit bricked less than 6 months after use. Unit is just blinking a blue light and despite having tried the TFPT and other suggestions online I still can't access the unit. I'll be RMA'ing the device, but unfortunately will be stuck with the same HDD after it comes back. Very disappointed to say the least

2 out of 5 eggsProblems If You Forget Admin Password

Pros: Reliable so far.

Cons: No way to to a factory reset if you forget your Admin password !
The instructions say there is a reset button - there is not. I am
an engineer, I disassembled the entire thing and there is no
button.

Manufacturer Response:

I can help you if you forgot your setup password. Send me an email so we can trouble shoot.

thanks

2 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Easy to do basic setup and use.
Buffalo's Tech Support is mostly hassle free and responsive.
Cost.

Cons: System is a bit antiquated in my opinion, and has some really stupid password requirements for users.
GUI is a poorly built and confusing for more advanced settings.
The whole thing failed on me in the first 4 months. (Multiple reboots, never acquired an IP address).

Other Thoughts: Cost is good, but think twice about Buffalo warranty. While they're RMA'ing my unit, I'm responsible to pay for shipping to them on THEIR failed unit. That's really annoying. It's unfortunate that this unit failed so quickly, and I really hope it's just a fluke, since I'll be up a creek if the next one dies shortly after my original warranty expires.

3 out of 5 eggssatisfied

Pros: large capacity for the home without building a home server.
fast and simple setup.
surprisingly small form factor compared to my last NAS. (about half the size)

Cons: Not much info in the box. Had to look around the buffalotech site for about half hour before I found what I was looking for.
personally not fond of the cloud layout.

Other Thoughts: I gave it 3 eggs because I felt like the instructions could have been a little better. The actual in depth setup with multiple users and levels of security is more complicated to setup than other devices I've used. Once you get through it the device is great. does everything it needs to. I got this as a storage drive for media in the home. I didn't want to build a media server because of the level of cost, and this was my next option. All in all I am satisfied. I'd just like to see Buffalo improve the in depth setup.

3 out of 5 eggsVery Slow

Pros: Works as advertised
Stays Cool

Cons: Very slow transfer rate

Other Thoughts: Easly set up. Nicely done closure no heat issues.
However, Transfer rate is so slow (apx 5mb/sec) so device severly handicaped. I tried it all. Changed cable, switched to gigabit. Nothing helped!

Manufacturer Response:

AlphaPe, send me an email with your contact info. Looks like we should trouble shoot your issues. On a gigabit network you should be getting 17-20MBps.

thanks

5 out of 5 eggs Just works

Pros: Had the unit up and running to the point of transferring files in 5 minutes. Supports DLNA, iTunes and Time machine. user interface is simple and easy for the less than tech savvy.

Cons: Lets you set user limits on data, but not limits on folders. May become an issue later.

Other Thoughts: Wanted a NAS to backup my computer and store my movies. This does all that and more for a great price.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: I was looking for additional network storage for my office. Nothing fancy, just a simple, "no hassle" NAS for additional hassle free shared storage. This drive fits the bill nicely. Installation and firmware updates were seamless, with no real expertise required (unlike some others I have installed).

Cons: none at this time

4 out of 5 eggsMostly Happy

Pros: It's quiet. Build quality seems better than most. Software is easy to install and maintain. Despite some poorly translated phrases, the interface has a no-nonsense feel to it, which I appreciate.

Cons: Slow write speeds, no way to set folder size limits (as far as I could tell), bundled backup software is not so great (are you shocked?)

Other Thoughts: I'm happy with this NAS. I didn't want to maintain another fully-fledged operating system for media and backups, so this little box fit the bill (and the budget). Write speeds are slower than I'd have liked (a few megs per second over wireless, faster via ethernet cable), but tolerable. The folders don't appear to have size limit quotas, so I had to use command line to set a sparsebundle size limit for Time Machine backups. That was time consuming. I wasn't impressed with the backup software that shipped with the unit, but the navigator software is good--keeps the drive available and mostly seems to stay out of the way.
