5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Installation was easy. Instantly recognized by client computers on the network. Installation of latest software made the install smooth.
Great NAS for a great price.

Cons: Time for setup is a little lengthy, but necessary.

Other Thoughts: I used two HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN 4TB 7200 drives in the system and they were easily recognized and mirrored.

It has a number of advanced features which have not been utilized in its current installation (no need).

3 out of 5 eggsOk if you can live with the problems

Pros: Low cost network storage

Cons: Limited Windows functionality. If you use a usb connected drive for backup, be aware that you can not connect that drive (if the NAS fails) to a Windows machine to retrieve your data. It does not use a file system that works in Windows. Also, if you use RoboCopy (built into Windows) for backup, it fails to signal to RoboCopy that a file is the same as one about to be copied and causes a lot of wasted backup time. There are two irritating problems here. This is not a problem on the Buffalo LS400 series and tech support refuses to address this problem. Their responce is "RoboCopy is a third party software and not supported". I guess they think playing nice with Microsoft is not worth their time.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame Buffalo can't be consistent with their compatibilities across their product line.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks well, fast, reliable, BUT....

Pros: Configuration was relatively easy in as much as it is generally counter- intuitive.

Cons: Web access is not as easy as is implied. The fact is they require port 9000 which is blocked in many circumstances rendering the type of "anywhere over the web access" as a pipe dream.

Other Thoughts: Some sort of status of RAID sync process/progress would be invaluable instead of guessing.
The product overall reflects its low-cost in the lack of features and true anywhere-on-the-web-access.

3 out of 5 eggsFits the bill for current usage

Pros: Easy setup and administration. Small footprint, whisper quiet. It works with little trouble and stores my data well.

Cons: Not able to protect data at rest with any level of encryption on the device itself. Contacted support and they said this is a limitation since it's for home/small business use. Sorry, encryption in 2014 should be for all ,not just enterprise products. For this reason I took off 1 egg. External network access is a bit cumbersome and glitchy to setup, also relies on UPNP (another no no, -1 more egg).

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a quick and dirty way to setup a NAS for some serious storage, this isn't a bad device. It has some redeeming features but for the most part it's a security nightmare waiting to happen. I personally will be moving to a competitor or the enterprise product to get the desired features.

5 out of 5 eggsAffordable DIY NAS Solution

Pros: It's inexpensive, fast and easy to setup and use. Setup for email notifications was fairly simple. Administration and other aspects are simple and self explanatory, but it maybe little challenging for a novice user.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: My devices came with the latest firmware, version 1.68, which could be why I haven't had any issues. I have RAID 0 running on one unit and RAID 1 running second unit.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works as it should, and has plenty of functions that makes it fun to figure out and use. The hard part was finding the owners manual from their website, but it was straightforward setting up the device after that. Just have patience with it and it will work fine without any problems.

Cons: Finding the owners manual on BUFFALO's website to use the devices functions.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 1 month

Pros: None

Cons: Failed after 1 month. Buffalo Tech support will not respond. Tried everything I could find online to fix. Stuck in Emergency mode. Lost a brand new 3TB drive. Could not recover even with new drive and firmware reinstalled. $300 wasted and no help available.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend to others. Very disappointed.

1 out of 5 eggsAlmost Useless

Pros: Stores files. Works with SMB/CIFS, can join a domain.

Cons: I'm having a hard time finding a use for this device. It has no support for r-sync, iscsi or anything else I would need a NAS to support. Sure you can hack the firmware and turn these features on, but I don't need/want that level of effort for a $120 device. Look elsewhere if you need any other features besides bare bones.
You can get a much better feature set in the QNAP TS-212-E for about the same price.

4 out of 5 eggsBuffalo LS-WVL/E working great

Pros: Installation was simple, easy to understand. The login and administration page are relatively simple to follow and understand as well.

Cons: Had to go on-line and to check on a few permission settings but, other then that has worked great.

Other Thoughts: I haven't experienced any of the issues with loud noises(fan), low transfer rates, and unit randomly shutting down weekly.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Sure Yer

Pros: Works with Windows 2012 AD and Backup. This was my main goal. I used this to replace a DLINK DNS-321 that I could no longer use as a backup when I went to Windows Server 2012 (Don't ask). But this seems to work fine with allowing the Server to store data on today the dive.

Cons: Seems a little flaky when checking AD for users. I don't always see the users/groups that I have in AD. I have not had it that long to track down the cause.

Also it seems when using the Web Page to access files, Windows User Groups are not allowed. Only Local users to the system. That means I would have to create a new account. The kills the whole idea of using AD to manage it.

Other Thoughts: At this time, it offers me tons more than my DLINK -321. I think this was a fair upgrade over the DLINK. But I have had the DLINK for years (always on) and not one issue. So it will be nice to see how this stands the test of time.
