1 out of 5 eggsAlmost Useless

Pros: Stores files. Works with SMB/CIFS, can join a domain.

Cons: I'm having a hard time finding a use for this device. It has no support for r-sync, iscsi or anything else I would need a NAS to support. Sure you can hack the firmware and turn these features on, but I don't need/want that level of effort for a $120 device. Look elsewhere if you need any other features besides bare bones.
You can get a much better feature set in the QNAP TS-212-E for about the same price.

4 out of 5 eggsBuffalo LS-WVL/E working great

Pros: Installation was simple, easy to understand. The login and administration page are relatively simple to follow and understand as well.

Cons: Had to go on-line and to check on a few permission settings but, other then that has worked great.

Other Thoughts: I haven't experienced any of the issues with loud noises(fan), low transfer rates, and unit randomly shutting down weekly.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Sure Yer

Pros: Works with Windows 2012 AD and Backup. This was my main goal. I used this to replace a DLINK DNS-321 that I could no longer use as a backup when I went to Windows Server 2012 (Don't ask). But this seems to work fine with allowing the Server to store data on today the dive.

Cons: Seems a little flaky when checking AD for users. I don't always see the users/groups that I have in AD. I have not had it that long to track down the cause.

Also it seems when using the Web Page to access files, Windows User Groups are not allowed. Only Local users to the system. That means I would have to create a new account. The kills the whole idea of using AD to manage it.

Other Thoughts: At this time, it offers me tons more than my DLINK -321. I think this was a fair upgrade over the DLINK. But I have had the DLINK for years (always on) and not one issue. So it will be nice to see how this stands the test of time.

4 out of 5 eggsBuffalo LS-WVL/E Working Well

Pros: On-line video helped on installation; support helped me understand how permissions worked; able to share data; able to backup PC automatically

Cons: Documentation could be better

Other Thoughts: It has been almost 4 months since my purchase and I have had NO serious problems; I have NOT experienced any of the noise problems some people have complained about. I am a retired Engr so I can normally follow technical instructions. The on-line video for installation was a big help. I did run into problems trying to setup different permissions but I called for support and support was given. I have been able to share with video/pics/doc with family and friends. I also use the NAS as an automatic 2nd backup location for my computer. Knowing what I know now, I would buy the NAS again.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great

Pros: I use this to stream movies to smart tv's,smart dvd players and smart phones, it plays mkv's,mp4's without issue. I also have another usb hard drive plugged in for storage for seperate desktop backup, the raid 1 array is for media only, I can write to the device at 42MB's and pull data off at 83MB's,the single disk nas only did about 24MB's either direction

the only down side is that when in the auto power mode the tv's will not wake the device up

Cons: auto sleep mode only wakes up with desktop software, not on demand from media device

Other Thoughts: this is perfect for what I use it for

3 out of 5 eggsNice Unit

Pros: Small, sleep mode, works well

Cons: Buffalo tech support ignoring me. :( Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement power supply that will work specifically with this unit? I asked Buffalo support to send me the specs or quote me a replacement power adapter, but they never got back to me, and I can't gleen enough information from the product description to guess what it is, plus the plug size is unique to the unit. My house flooded, but the water only get to the power supply unit. Now my data is sitting in this NAS, but I can't access it without power. Thanks to anyone who replies w/ a link to the replacement PSU, or Buffalo if you could let me/us know!

1 out of 5 eggs$30 RMA Fee

Pros: Very simple.

Cons: System would shut down once a week, then would not turn on at all. Buffalo requested $30 to RMA. Unit 2 month old.
Replacement unit Refurbished ONLY.

Other Thoughts: BTW, I'm driving to my customer to replace the unit at no charge.

Manufacturer Response:

Please email me if you have questions. The standard RMA process is free of charge. This is where we would ship your replacement unit after we have recieved the defective unit from you . The $30 fee is if you need an expedited RMA otherwise known as an advanced replacement. In this scenario, we would charge a $30 handling fee to ship out a replacement before we recieved your defective unit.

please email me if you have further questions.

1 out of 5 eggsLook Elsewhere!

Pros: Easy Setup

Cons: Tech Support. Poor documentation.

Other Thoughts: I usually don't write reviews for products, but this is an exception. Hopefully, I can prevent others from making the same purchasing mistake as I did.

I actually liked this product when I first purchased it. After a couple of months, the device indicated that drive 2 had errors. Assuming that I had a bad drive, I swapped the supposedly faulty drive with a Toshiba 3TB drive. The device indicated that it also had errors.

I ended up swapping both drives with brand new Toshiba 3TB drives. Again, the device indicated that drive 2 had errors. At this point, I realized that the device itself was having issues.

I contacted tech support and patiently waited for over 2 weeks for a reply before I moved on to another device. By the way, I'm still waiting for help from their tech support.

I would recommend that you look elsewhere if you are in need of a reliable NAS device.

Manufacturer Response:

Steve, Sorry that you have had a bad experience with our tech support team. Could you email me so I can find out what happened to your request and also trouble shoot your device? Our target response time via email is under 48 hours. I would also like to verify the email address you used to contact support. If you prefer to speak to a rep, you can contact our tech support dept at our US Based 24/7 number (866) 752-6210.

2 out of 5 eggscheap fan fails early

Pros: Compact, affordable, inexpensive, gigabit Ethernet, reasonably intuitive web-based user interface, reasonably responsive for a NAS in this price range.

Cons: The cooling fan is a CHEAP, bushing-type, and mine started clattering after only three months of 24x7 use. And, it is getting worse every day.

Worse, the manufacturer has NO replacements for sale but, according to their tech support, they would replace it under warranty if I send the entire unit back. I really do not want to incur the cost and downtime to send the unit back to get another CHEAP fan installed. Why they did not use a ball-bearing fan is beyond me (save 50-cents?).

By the way, trying to find an aftermarket replacement is turning out to be impossible - they used a fan design with UNIQUE mounting hole spacing (a Nidec D34666-67) which differs from the vast majority of 50mm X 10mm fans generally available (I can say this after spending hours looking at specs of the replacements I can find in this size, CFM, voltage, and current ratings). There is a direct ball-bearing replacement for that fan, but I have been unable to locate one for sale in the US.

I have also purchased a couple other comparable (specification-wise) 3-wire fans and modified the mounting holes, but the NAS firmware complains they are failed; evidently the tach spec in the firmware must be very specific and the speed difference triggers the failure message (an e-mail every minute!) and flashing RED LED. Not many options left at this point.

If it were not for this, I would give it 4-eggs (the NAS has other minor nits for some of the features).

Though I have generally found Buffalo products to be reliable, it is time to look for another brand of NAS.

Other Thoughts: Takes approximately 10-hours to complete the RAID1 initialization of a 2TB mirrored pair. Also, the monthly RAID scan takes nearly as long. Not too bad considering the price range, but it may be something to consider.
