2 out of 5 eggsSoSo

Pros: Fast transfers over USB 3.0. Encryption software and back-up software included.

Cons: You can either:
1 - Backup the drive using the backup utility, one click, easy, but NOT ENCRYPTED!
2 - Backup your files encrypted by DRAG AND DROP.

The fact that the backup software is not integrated with the encryption software is absolutely ridiculous. Why in the world would I want drag and drop to backup my files? What is this, 1997?

Also, documentation and manuals are too brief and stink.

Other Thoughts: Good drive for the price, but the lack of integration of the software and poor manuals, resulting in web searches for how-to's from other sites, result in 2 stars.

Pros: This is the drive thats inside this buffalo external harddrive (well the one i got)

If you look at the price of the drive itself looks like this is a good bargain.
The Drive sells for $60 and then the enclosure is only

ST500LT012 - 500GB - SATA 6Gb/s - 5400RPM 16MB

Cons: Would be nice if it was a 7200 Rpm drive

Other Thoughts: Momentus® Thin hard drives offer feature-rich, slim, lightweight style at price and capacity points that enable no-compromise designs for thin computing.

World’s first 7mm z-height, 2.5-inch form factor drive
Seagate SmartAlign™ technology1 provides a transition to 4K sectors without the need for software utilities
Available as a Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) with TCG Opal protocol, and as a FIPS 140-2 Validated SED for government-grade security2
Compatible with SATA 3Gb/s designs

4 out of 5 eggsBuffalo Who Knew

Pros: I never thought that buffalo made top quality products but now that I’ve seen and used this device I’m very impressed with the quality of this product.
USB 3.0 is super fast
Very slim and small strong aluminum construction
Transferred 200 GB of data to it from another usb 2.0 external drive and it took about 30 min not too bad considering.
This would be a great addition to a student or teacher to keep files/homework plus maybe video presentations and or music.
Unit measures 3.1” wide 4.5” long ¼ “ thick, the usb cable is 1.5 feet long that’s pretty standard for small external HDD’s
Read write speeds:
Read 121.1 MB/s Write 109.3 MB/s (sequence 1 MB block)
Read 43.25 MB/s Write 52.67 MB/s (random .5 MB block)

Cons: The included software on the drive will make it drop one EGG the software included is not useful at all really cheap doesn’t work right if they could throw in some good software with it would be a great all around package.
The usb cable is very thick and not to flexible and gives me a slight concern that it may damage port in the drive from long term stress the usb cable feels heaver than the drive itself. But with this said its still made from high quality materials and under regular use should give long term service.
Not much shock/drop protection!
Price point I think is a little high compared to other products

Other Thoughts: After using this product I will defiantly recommend it to other people and I will be buying more buffalo products for my personal and business uses. Great all around product nice job Buffalo.

4 out of 5 eggsBuffalo Ministation Slim

Pros: Very light and small, aluminium construction.

Usb 3.0 interface, backward compatible with USB 2.0.

Uses standard micro USB 3.0 connection port.

Fast read write speeds.:
Crystal Disk Mark USB 3.0 speed
Read 112.5 MB/s Write 112.1 MB/s (seq 1 MB block)
Read 40.96 MB/s Write 49.30 MB/s (random .5 MB block)

Real world test USB 3.0
134 GB video files transferred from a raid 0 storage unit yielded 59.2 MB/s speed.
13.4 GB video files transferred from same unit yielded 67.6 MB/s speed.

Crystal Diskmark for USB 2.0 yielded 35 MB/s Read and 34.7 MB/s write speeds.

These features make it really nice package for regular use data transportation device. It is small and lightweight it can be placed anywhere and it wont occupy too much space and add extra weights. Plus it is powered solely by the USB cable, no need of external power adapter. I have a transcend storejet 2.5" hdd which I thought was very small. The buffalo ministation is minuscule compared to the storejet.

It is virtually silent. I cannot hear any noise or vibration coming out of it.

Also, the use of micro USB 3.0 port is inherently sturdier than its predecessor micro/mini USB 2.0. I have had problems with mini and micro USB 2 ports becoming loose over time and causing connection problems. Micro USB3.0 seems to be designed to take more abuse.

Cons: Although the benchmark transfer speeds are pretty fast, I was expecting a bit more faster real world speeds.

Lack of any padding for shock absorption.

Included USB cable is very short.

Only 1 year warranty whereas soem competing products are priced cheaper and offer 3 year Warranty.

Other Thoughts: Overall A very nice package. Slim and light design makes it very favorable for storage on the move. I am a little bit disappointed in the performance but it might be a compromise in order to make it light and silent.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: Fast - USB 3.0
Seems sturdy - more sturdy than a laptop drive rattling around in an external case.
Small in size - check the details for dimensions.
This is smaller than a laptop drive in an external case. Actual engineering was used to make this device small.
Has LED to indicate power and activity - but the LED is really small.

Cons: There is a drive spinning inside - very slight vibrations and noise.
I'm guessing there's no padding inside the case for impacts.

Other Thoughts: When transferring large iso files (a few large files), I got about 105 MB/s.
When transferring a folder of pictures (lots of small files), I got about 34 MB/s.

I had to look up what kind of port the cord had: USB 3.0 Micro B Male

When I wrote this review, there was no picture featured on newegg.
If you are wondering what it looks like, search for HD-PUS500U3B and look at the picture, lol.

I'm used to using 500GB laptop drives in MASSCOOL external cases - this is treat in comparison.

I think this device is a little more expensive, but also smaller than the competitors
