5 out of 5 eggsNICE STORAGE DRIVE

Pros: Portable, Slim, Lighwieght
Nice slim design easy to take with you anywhere you need it.
Has software on drive to use for formatting, security etc.
Can install software as needed for whichever you choose to use.
Can be used for your desktop/laptop as is for backup/storage etc.
Can be used for your PS3/Nintendo wii/wii U/xbox 360 to store media such as movies/music (see other thoughts for this).

Cons: I didnt have but one con for this drive the fact that when using on ps3 as media drive, when selecting movies you must highlight the drive (usb device) and push triangle and select display all to get to your movies, unlike with music that shows up automatically.
otherwise very useful if you have a ps3 or other game system that you want to use its hdd for your games and this drive for your movies etc.

Other Thoughts: For other thoughts to use this drive for your gaming system you must format it to fat32, by using the software included on the drive itself as it comes pre-formatted in NTFS which does not work with the ps3 as I tested.

5 out of 5 eggsUSB 3 speed update

Pros: - Drive does not auto-run annoying software installs, all are optional

- Included software is quite robust and includes encryption and even a proprietary transfer protocol which speeds up transfer time by ~15-20% in my opinion (exact amount is unknown since the software does not give exact speeds)

-Aluminum design keeps drive cool while also being aesthetically pleasing

-Sufficient transfer speeds for a mobile platter-based drive

Cons: -Some USB 3.0 issues on one machine until driver updates and software install was performed, drive still worked in 2.0 mode at slower speeds (see below)

-Proprietary cable connection means if you lose it then you must order replacement from Buffalo, wont find this one at best buy.

Other Thoughts: After reformatting and doing a fresh install of Win 7 my transfer speeds greatly increased with USB 3

~100Mb/Sec avg speed for Mp3/Picture transfer

~130Mb/Sec avg speed for 2+ GB files

Since the newer drivers made such a difference I felt it necessary to provide an update to the review, it's greatness has only increased!

5 out of 5 eggsSmall, sleek, and silent storage

Pros: - Drive does not auto-run annoying software installs, all are optional

- Included software is quite robust and includes encryption and even a proprietary transfer protocol which speeds up transfer time by ~15-20% in my opinion (exact amount is unknown since the software does not give exact speeds)

Other Thoughts: After using this drive for a week I am quite pleased with its performance as a mobile storage/backup solution, along with the included software I feel this is a justifiable purchase for anyone looking to have a mobile, small and portable drive to keep with them or use in a vehicle (playing music on ford SYNC for one example)

I encountered no hardware issues or data loss and the drive has performed as expected on all machines used from windows xp all the way to windows 8

System Specs:
Intel i7 2700k @ 4.7Ghz / 1.27v
EVGA Z68 FTW Mobo
16Gb Corsair XMS RAM
Corsair Force GT 240GB SSD
1TB Western Digital SATA HDD
EVGA GTX Titan SC
Corsair 750w PSU

During mutiple file transfer (music, pictures) I saw an average of ~20Mb/sec in USB2 and ~38Mb/sec USB3

When moving larger 2+GB files the average speed was ~33Mb/sec in USB2 and ~67Mb/Sec in USB3

I did have some issues with my USB3 support until updating drivers, however speeds were not increased as much as they should have in my opinion, however this is due to driver problems I have had in the past and does not reflect poorly on the drive.

I would recommend this drive to anyone looking for a durable, small external hard drive to travel with or for off site backup.

4 out of 5 eggsMarvelous Mini

Pros: Small, thin, Light.

Solid transfer speeds all around.

Silver metal case looks nice, has a slightly textured feel. I like this better than some drives that are gloss in finish that ultimately get scratched/swirled like paint on a car. May prove difficult to keep clean over time.

White LED indicator light is non-obtrusive. It slowly pulses while the drive is plugged in and idling.

Connector fits snug into drive. Cable is of adequate length for average use.

Recognized instantly when plugged in.

Drive is pre-formatted; 465GB free with 94.8MB of space used for included software.

You are not automatically prompted to install the TurboPC software.

Dead silent 95% of the time. Although at some points it was audible with the drive plugged in slightly above my head about 3 feet away.

Deleting 109GB of data from drive was near instantaneous.

Cons: Included transfer speed enhancement software didn't really make a worthy improvement in transfer times. In some instances it actually hindered performance.

I usually don't install this type of software, but for EggXpert review purposes I did. I wish I could rate the product overall a 4.5 as the drive works marvelously, but the software is a bust.

Other Thoughts: Buffalo gives 1 year warranty on this product, while the drive inside if purchased separately has a 2 year warranty.

TurboPC EX replaces windows file transfer dialog box.
I like that it shows the number and size of remaining files, along with time passed and remaining time. Although, I do not like that it doesn't show transfer speed. The remaining time estimate is very accurate after the initial minute has passed.

Drive Performance Before TurboPC EX Software:

File Transfer speeds listed here are as observed from Windows file transfer dialog box.

Transfers were done through front panel USB3 on my desktop from a WD Black 1TB WD1002FAEX

1.43GB pictures; steady 50 MB/s; 45 Seconds
35.2GB music; Steady degradation in transfer speed from 90 slowly, usually in .3 MB/s increments, down to 56 MB/s. Once there it creeped down .1 MB/s at a time to finally stabilize at 54.5 MB/s; 2/3 through transfer. 11 minutes
