1 out of 5 eggsFirmware problem

This review is from: BUFFALO LinkStation 420 4TB 2-Drive (2 x 2TB) High Performance RAID NAS Personal Cloud Storage and Media Server - LS420D0402

Pros: Performance, features, price

Cons: 1) Absence of phone support
2) The system cannot be re-initialized from the scratch (reported by many customers as problem of firmware v1.81)
3) Absence of direct connection via USB, static IP/port, etc for fixing the issues (if any).

Other Thoughts: The way how this device work in case of problem does not make sense. As a raid array it should have an option to reset do default state and rebuild disks, etc. Unfortunately this button does not exist. The only procedure has been found over the internet is to reset to default settings playing with "function key" during boot. Unfortunately it does not help. Also we have noticed the shutdown problem. If you turn power button to "off" state, the shutdown procedure will take forever.

I did not find a way how to contact Buffalo Tech support by phone and escalate/fix the problem.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine for me

This review is from: BUFFALO LinkStation 420 4TB 2-Drive (2 x 2TB) High Performance RAID NAS Personal Cloud Storage and Media Server - LS420D0402

Pros: Easy to set up and reasonably quiet. Inexpensive for the amount of space you get. Works find in my house with 5 computers set up and using it as a shared drive.

Cons: Management software is not intuitive and could use improvement.

Other Thoughts: Not the fastest NAS on the market, but hey, that's not what I bought. I bought a NAS that was good value for the money. If you are looking for a super fast NAS, then get one with more horsepower and faster drives (or build your own). For home or small office use, mostly as back up and file sharing, it performs just fine.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked for almost 4 hours!

This review is from: BUFFALO LinkStation 420 4TB 2-Drive (2 x 2TB) High Performance RAID NAS Personal Cloud Storage and Media Server - LS420D0402

Pros: Nice simple design. Nice option set. Not a horrible interface. Tech support was pleasant and answered quickly.

Cons: Set it up and started transferring files. 3.5 hours later it transfer stopped and lights on front of unit indicated firmware corrupted.

Call Buffalo support. Seems like nice people. Followed their recommendation to update the firmware. Still got blinking light. Interestingly enough, could still see device and access was restored, but firmware corrupt lights kept blinking, so....

Followed their recommendation to update firmware again and also wipe the unit. After that, the device was no longer discoverable and is a brick.

1 out of 5 eggsBuffalo LS420D0402

This review is from: BUFFALO LinkStation 420 4TB 2-Drive (2 x 2TB) High Performance RAID NAS Personal Cloud Storage and Media Server - LS420D0402

Pros: Small and compact, large storage space, good price for amount of storage.

Cons: After 4 days of trying to get it working and pulling my hair out, I now have a tech service trying to figure out why it won't connect and they are not having any luck getting it working for me either. Have tried contacting Buffalo support with no responses. Instruction are very minimal and very basic. After spending a month deciding on which product to buy, I find out after buying it that it is NOT compatable wilth an AT&T U-Verse router, never saw any information about that on any info pages on it. I can't imagine I'm the only person with U-verse who has had this problem and it's not covered on any info page. Right now I have an expensive useless item setting on my computer desk. Be aware, if you have U-Verse, stay away from Buffalo drives.

4 out of 5 eggsLS420D0402

This review is from: BUFFALO LinkStation 420 4TB 2-Drive (2 x 2TB) High Performance RAID NAS Personal Cloud Storage and Media Server - LS420D0402

Pros: The Buffalo NAS is fast, quiet, has a small footprint, and a large cache(512MB). Once you have it working, you can forget about. It is just there anytime you want to access it.

Cons: Documentation could be better. I have given an overall description below of how this NAS is works.

Other Thoughts: You can choose to configure this NAS in one of several ways. I chose to configure it as a RAID 1. I did this because I have several thousand photographs that I want to protect and share, and as a RAID 1 array, I have complete backup in case of a drive failure. You will create an IP address on the NAS for your local network, then you must configure your router to forward uPnP port 9000 to get on the internet. After you get the NAS on the internet, you can go to Buffalo's web site and create an id. for your NAS. Once this is done, you can go to your Apple or Android store and download a free ap. for your remote device and you are done. You can configure the NAS to only allow RO, RW, etc. any of your pictures, music, or documents you wish to share.

I am a retired network engineer and I would recommend you either have some computer networking experience or know a friend who does to insure a successful installation.
