3 out of 5 eggsHardware Works - NovaBackup License upgrade fails

Pros: My first NAS Backup experience. So far working OK. Only problem is I can't get the promised free upgrade to the latest version of NovaBackup that came bundled with the device. The version it came with is 15.0.15. The current version is 17.1.

According to the license key I should be entitled to a free upgrade and Buffalo is telling me I should be entitled to a free upgrade but NovaStor seems to feel differently. Haven't been able to talk to anybody at NovaStor yet. Based on e-mails NovaStor wants to charge me $87 to upgrade if I do it in the next three days! Otherwise I pay full price which is double that ore more.

Suffice it to say it hasn't been fun. Will let you know the outcome.

Cons: So far, no free upgrade to NovaBackup

Other Thoughts: Not that happy with the NovaBackup software by the way. It works, but the UI is not that well thought out. There are two ways to set up backups. one is with the Wizard which allows weekly fulls and daily incrementals. The other is through the Backup Tab. In the Backup Tab it does not seem possible so set up a"weekly fulls and daily incrementals" backup. Why not.

Also, the Help for my version 15 tried to take me to a location that didn't exist. I had to download 17.1 and install it on a trial to get the help to work right. More fun.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: *Very competitively priced
*Equipped with a Seagate 3 TB, 7200 rpm HDD with 64 MB cache
*Pretty fast for a 1 bay consumer oriented NAS (all writes to the drive over gigabit network have been at greater than 40 MB/s, sometimes as high as 50 MB/s).
*Web interface with plenty of options including (3) user defined sleep schedules.
*Absolutely no subscription charges to use any of it's features, ever.
*Sleek appearance and quiet operation.
*The device stays relatively cool, even during large writes (the design seems above average, with the vents placed on the top and bottom rather than on the sides).
*Prior to purchasing this NAS, I called Buffalo to inquire about the HDD used and was able to speak to someone in the U.S. who had my question answered within 5 minutes of dialing their number.

Cons: *Needlessly cumbersome initial setup (NAS navigator)
*Experienced users would be better served using the included disc as a coaster and skipping straight to the web based configuration.

Other Thoughts: So far, this has been a great NAS and I have been thoroughly pleased with it's performance and value. One of the other reviewers mentioned his device taking 20 hrs. to copy 400 GB of data. Mine took about 65 min. to write roughly 350 GB, which leads me to believe his performance issues are network related.

3 out of 5 eggsGood price for 3TB, but very slow.

Pros: * Great price for a 3TB NAS.
* Quick and easy setup (see other thoughts).

Cons: * Speed. My initial sync of ~450GB took about 20 hours. The speeds are on par with USB 2.0.
* Lack of adequate documentation (see other thoughts).

Other Thoughts: The initial setup instructions are fairly poor, just pictures showing setup and the software installation. There is management software and a more complete user manual included on the provided disk. If you are moderately familiar with web management interfaces and network drives you should be able to set this up easily without the provided software.

As I have only had this installed for a few days I cannot speak for long-term usage, though I did have an issue where the network drive dropped off and I could not reach the web interface, I had to reboot the drive to restore functionality.

As stated above in the Cons, this NAS is slow. My initial backup sync to the drive was ~450GB, which took around 20 hours to complete. This is not a huge deal breaker for me, as I am utilizing it as a backup solution more than anything else, and there will not be a lot of traffic to and from the drive.

As of the review I have not tested the mobile functionality.

This is one of the cheapest available 3TB NAS and is from a brand I usually expect to have good quality products. Unfortunately because of the speeds I can only give this 3 eggs. I hope that this is something that can be addressed by a future firmware update.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: This is replacing a 2TB Linkstation I had previously that ended up losing a hard drive after 3 years of faithful service. Took a chance on another and this one works basically the same. I have a 2TB external drive attached for 5TB of bulk storage. Very quiet and very low power, only draws about 18 watts. Cheapest way to network attach 5TB of data period. Casing is sturdy and nice looking, well ventilated for passive cooling.

Cons: Slow for gigabit, basically USB 2.0 speeds no matter what you do. No fan on this model which keeps it running warmer than I'd like.

Other Thoughts: Best bang for your buck NAS especially if you have an old 2.0 external you can use to expand it. Not as ideal as having a 4 bay RAID NAS solution but you have to be realistic about spending $800 or more for network storage. Those boxes while nice are excessive for my purposes.
