4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5" USB 3.0 Red Portable Hard

Pros: Interesting design. This is the first (now i have 3) external hard drive that has the swapable ports. Was very strange at first, but it's growing on me.

Cons: USB cable is VERY short. Would have been a 5 star if it was longer. Currently I use the hard drive with my desktop (USB 3.0) and my laptop (USB 2.0) when using with the laptop I am using a USB 2.0 extension cable.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5" USB 3.0 Red Portable Hard

Pros: Great unit. Haven't had any problems.

Cons: None thus far

Other Thoughts: I was hesitant in buying a Seagate hard drive due to me buying one years ago that I had connectivity problems. I bought this one for a very good deal and I am glad that I did.

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty Hard Drive

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5" USB 3.0 Red Portable Hard

Pros: Price, small size

Cons: Bought this hard drive in October. This is February and my computer now tells me that this usb device is not recognized and has malfunctioned. I have a much older (and smaller gb) Seagate external drive that I love and has never given me a problem so I thought that another Seagate drive would be reliable. I have to be able to rely on my hard drive if I am going to put my files there. Not sure what to do now as this only comes with the standard return policy. I will try to contact Seagate.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job :)

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5" USB 3.0 Red Portable Hard

Pros: Size and design.

Cons: Didn't come with password protection :) But it's ok if you know how to use TrueCrypt (Go to bing.com and search for TrueCrypt)

Other Thoughts: I use it for back up images and documents. Don't use this to backup your movies, its a waste :). If you want to back up your movies, get an external HDD 4TB = $125.

1 out of 5 eggsUseless

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5" USB 3.0 Red Portable Hard

Pros: Pretty housing. USB controller board can be easily removed (it snaps into the housing) to access the raw drive. But that's it. There is absolutely nothing more that is good that I can say about this brick.

Cons: Useless. Will not enumerate on a Samsung NP700Z7C-S01US laptop via USB 3.0 (either of the two USB 3 ports which by the way use two different sub-controllers under one root hub), an Asus P6X58D MB’s USB 3 port (all four of them that happen to have two distinctly different USB3 chipsets) and an HP desktop (which I hate anyway). But what makes the drive truly useless is Seagate’s tech support.

I’ve been in the business for more than two decades. I’m no newbie. The first Seagate drive I ever installed was a 20Mb MFM drive. So this should give you an idea of my experience level with the company. I remember installing countless Seagate MFM and SCSI drives before IDE was even released and all of them were top notch. Then IDE came out and again all of them were top notch. Then ATA then SATA etc… all were top notch. Up until about 2 years ago.
When external drives in the USB 3.0 form factor started becoming prevalent. It was becoming obvious that Seagate was lacking in one important area. External drive controller / interface subsystems. Sure their drives direct controller boards still functioned as expected and the drives themselves are very nice, but their interfaces were and still ARE incredibly ineptly implemented.

This drive’s USB 3.0 functionality and more importantly compatibility is unacceptable. It will not enumerate on three different PC’s under USB 3. Two different USB 3 chipsets, NEC and Intel. Current drivers, current everything. Windows 7. The drive is useless. No, it’s not my specific drive. I purchased 4. All at the same time. Could all be defective? Simply put no. Because they do enumerate on a couple test PC’s I’ve tried but we’re talking 3 out of about a dozen PC’s I tried were unable to enumerate the drives under USB 3.

All that aside, what really makes this useless is Seagate’s response to the numerous posts on their own website user forum about this USB 3 issue. They send you to their Facebook page to launch a troubleshooting flash presentation back on their own site. What is wrong with this company? Facebook? To trouble shoot a product? Are they this desperate to get Facebook followers? This has to be a joke, right? No it’s not. Really.

Ok. Next thing that makes this useless is the troubleshooting flash presentation whose link appears to only be advertised on their Facebook page tells you to unplug then re-plugin the drive, check the cable, etc but not one thing about 2nd level trouble shooting. NOTHING! It’s a freaking cartoon of an attempt to help their customers. They tell you to plug it into a USB 2 port open the drive and run an executable from the drive that doesn’t exist. What???? The folder does not contain the file they speak of. REALLY? No, it’s not a hidden folder. Duh! The file simply is NOT there. On all four of my brand new Seagate bricks. Or should I say cinder blocks.

So what is this elusive file? A USB 3.0 driver. Come on. Really? Seagate, Grow UP!!!

Other Thoughts: IT's back to Western Digital for me.

4 out of 5 eggsTruly Portable

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5" USB 3.0 Red Portable Hard

Pros: Have been studying the 1TB Ext HD under Portable category and found none that could match this product weight & size.

This elegantly shining piece is really slim and is truly portable that could easily fit in your pocket. The new USB 3.0 Micro Type B connector enables usage of existing USB 2.0 cables also.

Cons: Haven't yet noticed any negative side of it.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for an offer price (product price $60 + tax $6) which was good deal when compared with 1TB EHDs of other brands.

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5" USB 3.0 Red Portable Hard

Pros: cheap?

Cons: included software does not work, which now makes me question the reliablity of the drive :(
