5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Hard Drive

Pros: For the price I got this hard drive for back 2 years ago it is a great product! Have not had any problems to this day. I currently have 3 partitions on it. One for my hackintosh to store files, one so that my windows side can store files, and I also have a third partition where I store my Wii games in order to play of my jailbroken Wii. Has not failed me once.

Cons: Have not found any issues with it since I first got it.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked only for just over a year

Pros: Worked great when it worked

Cons: It died abruptly and took my entire iTunes library with it. It was just over a year old.

Other Thoughts: Worked great while it worked. Now I have to pay a recovery service to hopefully get my data off!

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate TB external

Pros: Fantastic product. It operates smoothly and I love this brand/company. I am never risking my data on a lesser brand

Cons: It is a LITTLE bulky, though honestly, totally worth the reliability

5 out of 5 eggsFast USB 3.0 portable hard drive for home and office use

Pros: Small form factor, light, extremely quiet, runs cool. Fast read write speeds with USB 3.0. Plenty
of room, nice little drive to use for backup. Also works great hooked up to a router with USB
support. Was able to use mine as network attached storage with a router running DD-WRT. USB
powered, so no power adapter needed. Nice matte case.

Ran a couple of benchmarks with HD Tune Pro:
USB 2.0: Read: 31.4 MB/s, Write: 31.1 MB/s
USB 3.0: Read: 79.7 MB/s, Write: 78.7 MB/s

For comparison, my desktop’s 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 averages 103.4 MB/s read over
SATA3, so this portable hard drive is no slouch, even though it spins slower. USB 2 definitely
becomes a bottleneck, with speeds more than doubling with USB 3. Note that the above
measurements are average speeds.

Cons: Note that the following cons are quite minor and I do not consider them to detract from the
overall review of this drive. The USB cable is quite short. With a laptop this is no problem,
but for my desktop tower, I only have USB 3.0 ports on the back of the case so I have to reach
around my desk to plug it in for full speed. This means the drive will have to either rest on the
top of the case (where there is a hot exhaust fan) or on the floor. Also, this is not meant to be a
rugged drive- the casing is pretty much all plastic. I would be really careful with it and not just
throw it into backpacks or otherwise handle it roughly.

Other Thoughts: Overall a nice little portable hard drive. I do dabble in DJing a little bit- I bet this drive would
work great plugged into a CDJ or something at a gig. I would just be careful putting it through
too much punishment as it’s not exactly rugged: and of course, as with all hard drives, try to
move it as little as possible when it’s plugged in. Too much vibration could cause the head to
crash into the platter, turning your drive into a paperweight.

4 out of 5 eggsFast little bugger

Pros: I was amazed at how small this harddrive is, though I am probably easily amazed. Anyways neat little drive:

-USB 3.0 is fast, a lot of external harddrives with usb 3.0 for w/e reason don't seem to use the full speed of 3.0, can't say the same for this drive

-Short cable many list this as a con, but as a laptop user it's just the right length I feel.

-No bloaty bloatware, it's always nice when you don't get a prompt to install backuppro extreme 2013 v2 everytime you plug in a harddrive. This one you just plug in and use.

-I copied just under 90 gigs worth of files (music, movies, pictures, etc.) in 20 minutes, with an average speed of 65 to 100 mbps.

-This thing is pretty small, about the size of an average cellphone, fits snuggly in my pocket.

-Cheap, for how fast this harddrive is, and how much storage you get, it has a lovely price.

Cons: I worried about the strength of this harddrive, I've owned too many external harddrives where one accidental nudge off of a desks, and they are dead. I feel this harddrive may one day meet the same fate. The plastic case feels very cheap, and a little loose. I don't really like taking this harddrive around with me because of how fragile it feels.

Cable, even though it's perfect for laptops, if you are using your desktop 3.0 and it's at the back of your computer, you will most likley run into some problems. Not really a worry though just grab a longer USB 3.0 A to micro.

Other Thoughts: I've used seagate drives all of my life, and have never had a problem with their reliability. I still worry about this drive's reliability. Sadly this is fairly hard to test, but I will defiantly be keeping an eye on this harddrive.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad at all.

Pros: First of all this is not a bad little portable drive.
To begin my review, first of all some real world copy speeds so you can compare with what others achieved with the same drive.

Test machine was my primary laptop which is a ASUS G74SX Laptop and it has a USB 3 port and an internal SATA 3, 480GB SSD drive.

Copying a 3.5 GB ISO file from SATA 3 SSD drive to the external USB 3 drive

Max copy speed 101 MB/sec while lowestcopy speed was 70 MB/sec so an average of about 85 MB/sec.
It started slow and picked up speed until it got to 100 MB/sec and might have went higher but the file copy finished.

Reading from the external USB 3 drive to the internal SSD SATA 3 drive in my PC (same file, back to another folder)
Started at 48 MB/sec and finished at 60 MB/sec. You would think that reading would be faster than writing but this does not seem to be the case.

Next I took a folder of about 500 MB of MP3s (91 files ranging from 3 MB to 6 MB each) and I did not get a chance to see the copy speed. It copied almost instantly.

I was interested in the max achievable speed so I took a 25GB zip file and copied it to the external drive and this time I got a max speed of 89 MB/sec however that only lasted a few seconds. It leveled off at about 70 MB/sec. The whole 25GB file took 6 minutes and 19 seconds to copy.

It seems to do a whole lot better with smaller files.

As far as the drive goes, it's very quiet. You can hear it spin up when it's being plugged in. While it's being in use, it is very quiet. Can barely hear it seek.

As others have stated, the cable is extremely short. Can be a plus to laptop users but not so much for for desktop users.
For anyone curious, the cable is 18 inches long.

Cons: Cannot think of any, Besides the cable being extremely short. As others have stated and as I as well, the cable being short can be a Pro for some users but a con for others.

Other Thoughts: The drive can also be used with a standard Micro USB cable (the kind used for most cellphones to be charged nowadays) However that will make copy speeds very slow as that would be over USB 2 only, even if plugged into a USB 3 slot. I tried to copy the same 25GB file and it was copying at a top speed of 8MB/sec. So obviously, this drive is top notch when used properly over USB 3.

Inside the enclosure you will find a SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 HN-M101MBB 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive. Newegg item# N82E16822152291. Others have found a Seagate st1000lm drive. So it seems that Seagate put these together with any 1TB laptop drives they had on hand.

Overall I would recommend this hard drive.

If newegg does not remove hyperlinks. For anyone needing a 6ft cable for this drive you can get one here: http://www.usbgear.com/USB3-Micro-6FT.html

Enjoy :)

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 1-1/2 weeks

Pros: Worked well at the start with my new MacBookPro OS X 10.7.4 Lion. Time Machine formatted drive and worked like a charm. No problems for 1-1/2 weeks.

Cons: Today I had finished transferring 56 GB from my old Mac Powerbook and then all of a sudden nothing. Flashing blue light but no longer recognized by computer. Repeated attempts, same result. Cord is way too short, only 18" long.

Model Newegg sent me is SRD00F1 not the STBX1000100 I purchased. Don't know what to make of this. Didn't notice it till today.

I will RMA and give it one more try. Online reports say cable is flimsy and can have problems. I will try treating the cable on the new one with kid gloves. Still, it doesn't seem to me that Seagate should sell such sensitive cables for external drives. I'll report back after receiving the new one.
