2 out of 5 eggsWorks great for a few days.

Pros: This drive worked great initially. I was expecting that it would take some time to learn what to store on the drive, but it really seemed to go quicker than I expected.

Cons: After about a month I had noticed a pattern that made me realize that I couldn't let my computer sleep. If I allowed it to sleep upon return the HDD light would stay on solid for 5 to 10 minutes. (another reviewer points this out)... So I tried leaving it on, as it turns out any activity after periods of inactivity cause these 5 to 10 minute seizures. My 7200 was faster and I'm going back to it.

Other Thoughts: I wish they had a utility that would just allow me to specify which folders to keep on the SSD and bypass whatever flawed algorithm they have. As a developer it seems obvious to me that low level algorithms could not possibly "know" enough to accurately optimize the storage & they only add overhead to processing. The concept is good, but wait for a drive that has a management utility to allow manual allocation of SSD space, or for SSD prices to drop far enough. So far I have to write Hybrid SSD off as hype.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good performance product

Pros: This drive works very well. Windows XP and Windows Vista will boot much faster. Should be the same for Windows 7 & Windows 8.

Cons: This drive doesn't have 8GB solid state cache like its big brother ST750LX003. It only has 4GB cache and it's not better than the ST95005620AS like another reviewer suggested. If you look at the spec sheet on Seagate site, you will see that they only give the information for the ST750LX003 and the ST95005620AS. They intentionally don't mention anything about the ST500LX003 to mislead people and let them think it has 8GB cache.

Other Thoughts: Still a very good product even though the cache is only 4GB.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat replacement for WD Velociraptor

Pros: Small
Quiet
Fast
Big
Cheap

Cons: Not an SSD

Other Thoughts: I've used a lot of these in different applications: workstation, gaming machine, and laptop.
They're basically a small, quiet, inexpensive alternative to the WD Velociraptor.
They're not an SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsVery fast - good value

Pros: Tried an SSD; had problems - maybe used the incorrect cloning software. Nevertheless, decided to skip the frustration. Used the SSD in my laptop. Installed hybrid drive in my desktop. Very satisfied. Took two weeks to see max speeds, but it happened.

Cons: Not quite an SSD but speeds up the things I do most.

Other Thoughts: Too bad it is discontinued - it is a very good 500GB hard drive

5 out of 5 eggsbig difference

Pros: huge improvement in laptop boot time. Seagate software worked great to migrate to this drive. Boots in less than half the time. RECOMMEND

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsMomentus XT in my MackBook Pro (MBP) is a Life-Saver!

Pros: Incredibly fast compared to the stock Apple hard-drive that came in my 2007 MacBook Pro. My original HD was growing slower and slower -- boot times at over a minute, possibly even two -- and it eventually died. Installed the new HD, restored my MBP from a Timeline backup, and restarted. Everything is flawless and absolutely flying. My boot time is a matter of seconds now, apps load faster, and every program just runs better. It's incredible how this new HD has breathed new life into my aging machine. Additionally, the added storage space is wonderful and allows me to keep all my music on the internal drive instead having to lug around an external if I want access to my library.

Cons: None so far. I haven't even noticed the extra noise that upgrading to a 7200rpm drive supposedly imparted.

1 out of 5 eggsFlawed Product

Pros: None

Cons: I had high hopes for this drive's performance after reading some of the reviews posted here on Newegg.

Except that my first hand experience was dismal.

The drive freezes constantly and the computer will not respond. It eventually springs to life and works OK for a very short time where the cycle repeats it self.

I thought it was what some stated was the drive learning ones behaviors and routines, but this is most definitely defective, it freezes for long periods before resuming function...

I'd recommend a conventional 7,200 rpm drive os an SSD, stay away from the Hybrid drives!

Other Thoughts: My wife is going crazy and holds me responsible for her downtime on her work computer... It was with my recommendation after reading the reviews that I purchased the Momentus Hybrid drive...

5 out of 5 eggsReliable

Pros: Worksgreat

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Ordered G-skill first and it did not work had to send it back. Should have bought Kingston in the first place. Learned cheaper is not always a good thing!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks in a 15" MacBook Pro

Pros: Works so far

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Installed this into a MacBook Pro from 2006 to get more space and to do a clean install of OSX 10.7. This is listed in Seagate's site as a Gen II model which suggests that it has 8Gb of SLC NAND as it's larger sibling the 750Gb ST750LX003 reviewed at AnandTech. The older 500Gb XT ST95005620AS is known to have only 4Gb of SLC NAND. My MBP will never take advantage of the 6Gb/s speed of the drive but it might be useful down the line when I migrate to another machine. Boot ups and launches feels slightly faster compared to the 320Gb 7200 rpm drive it replaced but it is cheaper than getting an SSD of a comparable size

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: 500 GB of Space
Faster than a typical 7200RPM
No troubleshoot issues, easy installation (just swap, put your OS on, grab some drivers, and go)

Cons: They dropped the price the day after I bought it

Other Thoughts: I bought this hard drive before the price was lowered by 20 bucks so that sucks (pun intended maybe?), but the actual performance of the drive is top notch compared to other non-SSD. No, it's not as fast as an SSD, it's not supposed to be, BUT it's much faster than normal HDD. I can restart my computer in 15 secs no problem, doesn't take much longer from regular boot up either. Wish I had a bit more space, but I can always get an External USB 3.0 HDD for my music later. Worth the money.
