5 out of 5 eggsCame in super fast and is great

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: 1. Portable
2. 1TB
3. USB 3.0/2.0 compatible
4. Does not get hot when under heavy load unlike my WD portable HDD

Cons: None really, but see"other thoughts"

Other Thoughts: I kind of wish Seagate made their product registration more concise and their website easier to navigate. I registered the product, but I have no idea what it actually does because I don't know how to view my registered products at their website

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive, Advice To Users With Issues

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Great drive, fast with USB 3.0.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I am writing this review because I noticed some reviewers had issues with the drive being shown "active" in device manager but not showing in My Computer" What you need to do in that circumstance is go into Disk Manager and assign the drive a letter. Normally when this happens the drive is using a letter that is already in use by another device and thus will not show up in my computer until the drive letter is changed. That is not just this drive either, thumb drives, internal HDDS, and externals can all have this issue.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after two-ish years

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: It was a decent drive while it worked...

Cons: ...but I think I've had it ~two years, and it stopped working without warning. When plugged in it now makes what I'd describe as a faint beeping sound and is not recognized as a device by any of my computers.

Since it was obviously out of warranty opened the case and plugged in just to see if maybe it was the enclosure, but it was the drive.

Other Thoughts: Guess one year warranty means you shouldn't expect it to last two years?

This drive mostly sat around on my shelf, so it's not like it should have been worn out or anything.

3 out of 5 eggsLast a Year and a Half

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Fast transfer rate, wakes quickly

Cons: Sometimes would disconnect and require unplugging and replugging to connect. This became more frequent after a year and wake up required longer to read. A folder mysteriously moved into another folder and became impossible to read, however the folders within could be read. Moved to another computer that read and allowed content to be transferred. It failed completely soon afterward and the drive (a Samsung) within was removed in case the interface might be the cause of failure, but the drive itself no longer is readable.

Other Thoughts: At least I had some warning of an impending problem and got my 600gb of data transferred.

1 out of 5 eggsDead on connect; do NOT trust to backup your data

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Good availability (In-stores & online); Fair pricing; Small; Lightweight

Cons: Device was immediately labeled not recognized in Windows, so I entered device manager to check exactly what drives were connected, recognized, and active. Not seeing it, I simply attempted reconnecting it, and it was never even acknowledged again. Tried connecting to multiple computers and saw the same results - no response whatsoever. Buy a better external hard drive.

Other Thoughts: First product I've ever purchased from Seagate, and it may be the last.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little drive

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Got tired of Windows 7 losing restore points. St up back to this drive and now I don't care whether Win 7 saves restore points or not. Easy to set up. Excellent.

4 out of 5 eggsDied due to user error - but died nonetheless

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Adequate transfer speeds
Perfect plug-and-play, no issues at all

Cons: Claimed storage space vs actual storage space was disappointing
It died (due to user error [but it still died]) :(

Other Thoughts: Transfer speeds were brilliant. Reading from the drive took a fair bit more time than writing, but was still a vast upgrade from USB 2.0, and writing things to the drive was a dream come true. I'm sure there are other drives with more consistent speed, and higher transfer rates - but as an average user backing up primarily game files and films this drive worked excellently. For instance, I backed up my ENTIRE steam library - about 500GB of data - and it took no time at all. And reading directly from the drive I was able to restore TF2, about 13GB of data, in 5 minutes (about 45MB/second, if my math is right). I was quite pleased - that would have taken much longer if downloading.

My primary issue was the actual storage capacity. Every hard drive has some lapse in advertised capacity vs actual capacity. That's to be expected. But I seem to recall being disappointed with the actual capacity - it felt like it was a worse ratio than you might see on other drives. The drive is still a good buy, but it was still a bit disappointing.

And finally: The drive died. Due entirely to my own user error. It was loaded in a messenger bag that I was taking to a friend's place, the bag was left in my car, which was left directly in the sun, all day, in the middle of a hot Utah summer. As you can imagine - no bueno. Next time I tried connecting the drive it didn't work - no little blue light showing that it's connected to a computer, nothing. Tried many, many USB ports on many machines. Nothing.

I know this is ENTIRELY my fault, but it's still quite frustrating, and I'm still docking an egg (which might be petty, but hear me out). This is because I have a hefty suspicion that a higher end hard drive might have survived such a brutal condition. Other electronics of mine have come out of similar neglect with no issues at all. It's still my fault for neglecting it in the first place, and it's my fault my precious data was lost (not just game files. I had some important documents on that baby). But I'm quite positive a better quality drive might have come out of that situation alive, if not a little grumpy. This was about the cheapest 1TB external hard drive that I could find, and I suspect there might've been a reason that it was so cheap.

In the end: I'd actually recommend this drive. It performed brilliantly, the storage space wasn't TOO bad (just a tiny bit unexpected, but not bad AT ALL for $60), and it was compact and light and lovely. But I would advise that it IS a low tier external drive, and even if you aren't as boneheaded as me, you might want to consider something that's a little better quality. It's always a gamble gunning for an inexpensive piece of hardware, and it was a gamble I was fine with taking, but it's something you might want to keep in mind. And also, don't leave it in your car. Ever.
