4 out of 5 eggsDied due to user error - but died nonetheless

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Adequate transfer speeds
Perfect plug-and-play, no issues at all

Cons: Claimed storage space vs actual storage space was disappointing
It died (due to user error [but it still died]) :(

Other Thoughts: Transfer speeds were brilliant. Reading from the drive took a fair bit more time than writing, but was still a vast upgrade from USB 2.0, and writing things to the drive was a dream come true. I'm sure there are other drives with more consistent speed, and higher transfer rates - but as an average user backing up primarily game files and films this drive worked excellently. For instance, I backed up my ENTIRE steam library - about 500GB of data - and it took no time at all. And reading directly from the drive I was able to restore TF2, about 13GB of data, in 5 minutes (about 45MB/second, if my math is right). I was quite pleased - that would have taken much longer if downloading.

My primary issue was the actual storage capacity. Every hard drive has some lapse in advertised capacity vs actual capacity. That's to be expected. But I seem to recall being disappointed with the actual capacity - it felt like it was a worse ratio than you might see on other drives. The drive is still a good buy, but it was still a bit disappointing.

And finally: The drive died. Due entirely to my own user error. It was loaded in a messenger bag that I was taking to a friend's place, the bag was left in my car, which was left directly in the sun, all day, in the middle of a hot Utah summer. As you can imagine - no bueno. Next time I tried connecting the drive it didn't work - no little blue light showing that it's connected to a computer, nothing. Tried many, many USB ports on many machines. Nothing.

I know this is ENTIRELY my fault, but it's still quite frustrating, and I'm still docking an egg (which might be petty, but hear me out). This is because I have a hefty suspicion that a higher end hard drive might have survived such a brutal condition. Other electronics of mine have come out of similar neglect with no issues at all. It's still my fault for neglecting it in the first place, and it's my fault my precious data was lost (not just game files. I had some important documents on that baby). But I'm quite positive a better quality drive might have come out of that situation alive, if not a little grumpy. This was about the cheapest 1TB external hard drive that I could find, and I suspect there might've been a reason that it was so cheap.

In the end: I'd actually recommend this drive. It performed brilliantly, the storage space wasn't TOO bad (just a tiny bit unexpected, but not bad AT ALL for $60), and it was compact and light and lovely. But I would advise that it IS a low tier external drive, and even if you aren't as boneheaded as me, you might want to consider something that's a little better quality. It's always a gamble gunning for an inexpensive piece of hardware, and it was a gamble I was fine with taking, but it's something you might want to keep in mind. And also, don't leave it in your car. Ever.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: It's a terabyte.

Cons: This hard drive died on me after the fourth time I used it. It is completely dead. The hard drive did not do much more than sit on my desk and hold backup data. I loaded data onto it for the fourth time, left it transferring overnight, and the next morning, I could not get it to work. I tried different cords, different usb drives, and different computers, and then finally took it to the store to get it checked out. It is now a very expensive paperweight.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully Seagate will exchange/return it for me... and if exchanged, the next hard drive won't die while practically brand new.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: It is not worth much less than its price.

Cons: The plastic enclosure is a bit flimsy, but that should come at no surprise: if you are a well organized traveler, you aren't likely to break it. The same for the cable itself: I didn't bother replacing the one included with a real 3.0 cable for as long as it worked (I don't transfer a lot of sensitive data).

What came at a surprise is the USB receptacle coming off with the cable at the last use... No comment. The warranty period has expired one month ago, so I'll probably just tear through that cheap plastic to reach the drive inside.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Light. Fast. Only 1 connector (no external power supply)

Cons: not free?

Other Thoughts: I bought this since I was annoyed with my old iOmega 1Tb drive - that one is large, about 4 times heavier, needs an external power supply.. Was decent when i got it few years back at good sale, but technology moves forward. This one is about 2 times smaller and much lighter too.

Also as I wrote same ~300Gb folder to both drives side-by-side this new one was done about 3 times faster.

1 out of 5 eggsMediocre support service

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Standard 1TB USB3.0 drive

Cons: After couple months drive developed unreadable sectors and failed SeaTools tests. I've got RMA and sent it back for replacement. No updates on the status so far, nothing. Called two times. Support rep. was highly unprofessional to say least. Pity to look what once great company became now...

Other Thoughts: Seagate really has to put some more efforts on support training, at least on communication skills.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate 1TB

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive STBX1000101 Black

Pros: Excellent external hard drive. USB 3.0 makes it very fast. Have had it for more than a year and still works just like it did on day one. Very silent, and it seems to be well built.

Cons: Cable is a little short, but most USB powered external hdd's are like that
