5 out of 5 eggsRiData DVD's and Seagate 3TB HD

Pros: Before I begin my review on this product, let me set the record straight on something. NewEgg DOES NOT PAY their Eggxpert Reviewers ANY MONEY for a review (GOOD OR BAD - ON ANY PRODUCT)!!! When they 1st asked me to become a reviewer, they told me that I could post ANY TYPE of review that I wanted to, either GOOD OR BAD! The only thing that they asked me to do was to be honest in my review, which I try to be. Now that this is finished, let's start.

On June 10, at roughly 12 noon, I purchased 3 items from NewEgg. They were (2) 100 Packs of RiDATA 4.7GB DVD-R's and (1) Seagate Constellation CS ST3000NC002 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal HD.

Now I'll be honest in that normally I wouldn't buy a 3TB HD from anyone, not even Seagate. This is because I've heard and read too many bad reviews about 3TB HD's quitting before their time or being "DOA". No one, not even myself, likes to deal with a HD that quits before it's "MTBF" comes due. "MTBF" stands for "Mean Time Before Failure" and is generally a Time (in hours) that a piece of equipment is supposed to run for BEFORE it fails.

I was originally just going to replace my defective 2TB Seagate with another one. But when I saw that this 7200 RPM 3TB HD was on sale for roughly the SAME price as a NEW 2TB HD I was considering purchasing and after reading the reviews on this HD, I decided to "Bite the Bullet" and buy one.

Now I had to wait until the 12th for GoHardDrive to charge my account to pay for the HD which I didn't expect. I expected the S-U-P-E-R-F-A-S-T service I have come to expect and love from NewEgg in which my orders are processed the SAME DAY or the next. Normally I would deduct an EGG for that reason BUT that was my fault for not noticing that the HD was being sold by a 3rd party seller so no eggs on that.

I got the (2) 100 packs of DVD's on the 12th W-I-T-H-O-U-T ANY DAMAGE which is nice. Now I've used these same DVD's before and I have to tell you I rate them as an EXCELLANT product. As a matter of fact I was waiting for them to go on sale again JUST so I could order more. Now all I had to wait on was the 3TB HD from GoHardDrive. This is where I hummmm the tune from Jeopardy...

Today (the 13th) I got my 3TB HD via USPS. Now for USPS, that's F-A-S-T, I have to admit. The package came in a brown paper cardboard box just barely bigger than the HD itself. The HD was securely double wrapped in HEAVY DUTY bubblewrap and fit into the cardboard box so tightly that I had to fight to get it out. NOW T-H-I-S IS HOW TO SHIP A HARD DRIVE. NewEgg, you ought to take a lesson from GoHardDrive on HOW to do this. I'm sure that all of your customers would appreciate that as well.

Regretfully, I won't be able to test the HD until tomorrow morning as I have to go to work shortly, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow to see IF there are any problems with the HD itself. But in ALL HONESTY, considering on how WELL PACKAGED the HD itself was, I don't expect that there will be

Cons: But there is ONE M-A-J-O-R PROBLEM GoHardDrive...

When I opened the box for the 1st time, it had a distinct odor coming from it.

It took me a while to determine WHAT it was, and I think it is the odor of Bananas?!? Bananas??? Yes, Bananas... I'm still trying to figure out where or what the odor came from. Was someone in your shipping department sipping on Banana Daiquiris and maybe spilled some into the box before sending this package out, if so you must have the happiest shipping department in California. Or was someone just eating Captain Crunch Cereal with bananas on top. I still can't figure that one out... Bananas???

Well the HD is NOW installed, but when I powered the system back up, I got an ERROR MESSAGE on my MAIN Monitor telling me NO HDMI INPUT or VGA INPUT was detected. I then broke open the PC again and Re-Seated the Video Card twice with the same result.. Now was the time for me to put on my THINKING CAP. Was the NEW HD drawing too much power and causing the Video Card to fail? I doubted that (even with 5 HD's and a DVD Writer as well). Was my monitor finally giving up the Ghost? Two Monitors AT the SAME TIME??? I doubted that as well. The only other consideration left was to Re-Seat the VGA Card again AND this time do a HARD-Reset on the BIOS as well and see if that works. It did, but as to what happened, I don't know; but it's fixed now...

Other Thoughts: The NEW HD seems to be working fine (for now anyway). I'll post another review later on OR when/if it dies. And the DVD's seem to be fine as well (as I expected). Both NewEgg and GoHardDrive get AND DESERVE 5 Eggs on this purchase. Both shipments were delivered FAST and well packaged, even with GoHardDrive using USPS which is normally VERY SLOW. Good job NewEgg, again. And welcome to my preferred list of outlets GoHardDrive. You'll probably be getting orders from me in the future as well. Good job to you as well...

Would I purchase these items again for myself? At THESE prices and WITH the FAST delivery and good product reviews? Heck YES I would, without hesitation... If these DVD's come on sale again, you can bet your life I'll be buying more of them...

Would I recommend these purchases to others? YES, I would, without hesitation...

Now... If I can just figure out WHERE and HOW the Banana Smell came from???

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, great size

Pros: Price is right, enterprise grade, great for large storage that doesn't have to be blindingly fast.

Cons: A little slower (high latency) and less cache compared to other Seagate enterprise grade drives.

Other Thoughts: I just installed 15 of these across three servers and ran a full destructive badblocks test on every one with zero failures prior to putting into use. Then, with 5 drives in a RAID-z configuration with 11TB usable after format per server, benchmarked at 601MB / sec write, 726MB / sec read. Not a tortoise, that's for sure, considering I saved $200 per server using these versus the higher speed Seagates.

3 out of 5 eggs1 Good, 1 DOA

Pros: Inexpensive, big, and quiet enterprise-class drive. Good for NAS & desktop RAID.

Cons: One of two drives was basically DOA; made loud thrashing and grinding noises, then caused a RAID array failure within hours of completing the first build/format. Very time consuming and disappointing, particularly for a Seagate drive. They are the best [most reliable] in my experience.
