5 out of 5 eggsFast and reliable

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: When buying anything, one must consider ownership experience for the expected duration. One must also consider the value of their time.Ten years ago, everything was made better, with a longer expected life. Today, we all want cheap, so the manufacturers are producing just that, cheap. And the life expectancy has attenuated. I have old Barracuda drives that are 10 years old still performing satisfactorily, but my 3 year old drives have all died. The manufacturers realize that if it is built too well, then they will not be selling us another. This is called planned obsolescence.
If you have had a drive fail, then you know the cost. Lost data, time to repair and replace, aggravation, etc. It makes sense to buy the best quality that one can. These enterprise drives fill that need. While they may not be the quality of an enterprise drive of ten years ago, they are the best that is available today. Look at one and compare to a non-enterprise drive. They are bigger, weigh more, and the platter has dual bearings. When one considers that the platter spins at 7200 RPM, dual bearings are necessary, yet only the enterprise drives have this. A warranty tells one what the manufacturer thinks of his own product. Ten years ago all drives had a 5 year warranty. Today, only the enterprise drives do. This informs greatly.
Additionally, I appreciate the great speed of these drives. Performance is exceptional and I am pleased with the performance. I have not run any tests, but I can easily see the difference in the required time for a program to come up and run. If it is that apparent, then the difference is more than a few microseconds.
There are many comments about the price, but if one obtains more, then one should expect to pay more. And when one considers the reliability and performance, then in the long run, these are actually less expensive.

Cons: I had a problem once trying to install this on an eight year old machine. There was some limitation in the BIOS and it could not format and partition it. I put it in a newer machine to format and all was well. These new drives have vertical data storage on the platter which understandably requires more recent instructions.

Other Thoughts: I still have an old Matsushita built Connor Fireball in use. No one builds quality like this anymore. A crying shame. These enterprise drives are the best that are available today and are worth the additional cost. If one looks at cost per time, then these enterprise drives are actually more cost efficient. I recommend them highly.

5 out of 5 eggsNice RAID component drive

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I'm slowly replacing the drives in my RAID-5 setup with these. Just added my second one. Excellent drive for the price especially with the 5 year warranty. Ubuntu Disk Utility reports: (min/avg/max) 96/152/213 MB/s read and 85/125/165 MB/s write.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cool & Fast. Over the last few years we have purchased almost 100 of these ES.3, 1 TB to 4 TB in size drives. They all work great and we have not had any failures.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: We use these as our OS drives (Raid 1) for our HP ProLiant DL385p Gen8 servers.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good for Business or Server as this drive is a self encrypting drive which keeps all information secure but I would not recommend this drive for personal or home users.

Cons: This drive can lock up by itself rendering it useless.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive unaware that it was a self encrypting drive which is able to lock itself and there is no way to access the drive. You cannot read, write or do anything and commercial software will not erase, format, delete nor work on this drive once it locks up.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good Price

Cons: Noisy, Poor Quality Control, Read/Write Issues.

Other Thoughts: Third Seagate drive to experience the same issue across different machines. They've all made a terrible amount of noise. Two drives in particular (the constellation series) are reliable enough to store large amounts of data, but have some serious reading issues. The Seatools suite offered is also fairly inept at finding issues. If you intend to use this drive on a personal computer as anything other than a backup, I would recommend looking at another manufacturer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Very fast for a mechanical hardrive. Test at 175/mb's/s. No its not as fast as the ssd's I have in my rig but its not suppose to be. For a 1tb mechanical drive its fast. Five yr warranty a plus. Totally happy with this drive.

Cons: Not a one.

3 out of 5 eggsRock Solid

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Solid hard drive with above average speed. It should outlast every component in my build. It is packed in a clam shell.

Cons: Giving it three eggs due to the fact my hard drive was basically loose in a fairly large box. Newegg put 8 inflatable bags in the box but 7 were flat. The clam shell has abrasive edges which most likely caused the punctures in the packing bags. I honestly did not expect it to spin up but it did.

4 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 128mb cache makes a difference - other drive was a Samsung Spinpoint S7 with 32mb cache and this one
does about 25% better in SANDRA benchmarks.
Real world difference? Not sure.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Ran Sea Tools testing before installation - Seems
solid - BUT I was deeply suspicious as this drive
showed up WITHOUT a sealed antistatic bag, in just
a clamshell....All the drives I have gotten from Newegg
have arrived in sealed antistatic bags till now.....
Did I get somebody's returned drive?
Time will tell - Lack of that bag is why I gave it
4 instead of 5 eggs - Jury is still out.
