Franky W. 8/6/2013 5:12:36 PM Ownership: 1/5 Verified Owner	Rating: 5/5Great drive This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0043 1 TB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Pros: * SAS 6Gb/s, 128MB cache, 4.16ms avg latency, MTBF of 1.4 million hours and 5-yr warranty! * Excellent price/performance ratio. In my research so far, it is the best value 1TB SAS drive in the 7200rpm class. * Self-Encrypting Drive (SED), but it does not force you to use this feature as long as your SAS RAID card has no compatibility issue with SED. I am assuming it works for all Areca SAS RAID cards with firmware 1.51 or later. * Unlike consumer SATA drives, this is an Enterprise SAS drive, so it comes with detailed documentation. And I no longer have to worry about tweaking TLER or NCQ settings (which mostly concern consumer SATA drives) on my RAID card. * Compatibility: This is my first SAS drive. I was a little worried at first, but it works on my Areca ARC-1680ix-12 with firmware 1.51 in Supermicro CSE-M35T-1B enclosures and also a SGI Rackable SE3016 16-drive chassis. In fact, I can mix this 6GB/s SAS drive in the same RAID volume/chassis as my other cheap 3GB/s SATA drives - though not for long as I am migrating my raid set / volume from 3Gb/s consumer SATA drives to this 6Gb/s SAS enterprise drive. This compatibility (with Areca, other 3Gb/s SATA drive, and 3Gb/s enclosure/backplane) allows flexibility, though I believe the credit is due mostly to the RAID card. Cons: None so far. Other Thoughts: For some unknown reason, it is priced noticeably below the other Seagate SAS and SATA 1TB drives in the same Constellation ES.3 line! Same performance, plus SED (though I don't use it). Perhaps the price is due to not many people know if it is compatible with their RAID card or not (and you do need a RAID card that supports SAS). 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Did you? Very reasonable price point -- just a smidge above the equivalent SATA drive. 3rd Generation. This version is SED (self encrypting) which I guess is better :-) Cons: Don't expect this to have performance of 15K SAS drives. Difference between 23,43 and 63 versions of drive is a bit confusing.
