1 out of 5 eggsFail early and often - avoid this model

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Runs cool and quiet, good warranty

Cons: I bought two of these a few months apart for my home server, and within another month both of them have failed. The replacement for the first one was recertified, and it just failed as well. The replacement for the 2nd one was another new drive, but the delivery driver threw the box onto the porch so it probably won't last long either.

Other Thoughts: I've had extremely good luck with seagate over the years, but this model has been the bane of my existence. I am immediately switching to a different brand for my server. Maybe the next revision will work better.

2 out of 5 eggsLook elsewhere for reliability

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: All 4 that I purchased didn't fail out of the box.

Cons: 1 failed out of the box, which Newegg has RMA'd, another failed soon after which I'll have to RMA as well.

Other Thoughts: From the reviews I've read and now personal experience, if you buy more than one, which most people looking at these will for an enterprise solution, your odds go up that you will have a bad drive or two in your possession.
Very disappointed with Seagate. Gave two eggs for the two drives that haven't failed......yet

5 out of 5 eggsGood drives

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have 8 of these, 4 in 2 different servers. All work great in Linux mdraid 10

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I got these in 2 seperate orders, both orders of 4 came in big boxes, stuffed with paper and the drives were in plastic shell. They weren't bouncing around or anything and all 8 drives worked with no issues from get go and still working well now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, Easy Install, Quiet

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 2 TB of storage for a great price
5 year OEM warranty
Runs quiet

Cons: It's not a 3, 4, or 5 TB drive!

Other Thoughts: I don't understand why some customers complain that the drive goes clackety-clack loudly, unless they've installed it in a machine with a badly out-dated main-board. I installed mine without a hitch in Win 7 64-bit, with a sata III cable I ordered along with it, and am having no issues so far. But then I have always been happy with Seagate products. Another thought is that I am using this drive for storage, and not an o.s. boot drive, so maybe that's where the noise comes in. I will come back and update this review in a few months to let you know if it's still going well, or if I have problems.

1 out of 5 eggsSOMETHING UNEXPECTED

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: EXCELLENT WARRANTY FROM MANUFACTURER. ENTERPRISE GRADE FIRMWARE AND TECHNOLOGY

Cons: POOR AND LOW QUALITY CONTROL ON SEAGATE'S MANUFACTURING

Other Thoughts: When you want a reliable system you implement RAID with Enterprise grade hard drives, these drives are new, warranty with Seagate 5 years and constellation which has a name in the industry. Out of the two drives one of them started making clickety noises upon arrival and it died completely in less than 24 hours. Excellent Newegg policy allowed complete returns. I'm purchasing two WD enterprise now, which has its flaws too but hope they will work best. Maybe I will go down the HGST route, these are never failed on me.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Works
Taking 2 eggs off for poor packaging.

Cons: Very poor packaging: The drive was loose in a box with some bubble wrap thrown on top of it. Come one newegg....I will keep an eye on the drive, hope there was no damage.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Packaging

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: No apparent damage, maybe that will be a pro when I finish testing these.

Cons: Box arrived with no outward damage, but inside, there was half of the Styrofoam "clam shell" that is usually used for drive packaging. There were a few of the drives still down in the clam, but because the top of the box had been filled only with large bubble packs to hold the drives in, they were scattered throughout the box. Some of the individual plastic shells that protect the drives were opened and the raw drives were loose. It appears that the handling caused most of the bubble packs to burst, providing no insulation for the drives, allowing them to dislodge from the Styrofoam. Not real impressed with packing.

Other Thoughts: I will be testing these and will be prepared to return them, should they prove to be defective.

5 out of 5 eggsMy New Favorite

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Faster than the WD Black

Quieter than the WD Black

128 MB Cache

Better sustained transfer rates than the WD Black

Cons: A bit on the pricey side.

I can no longer say WD makes the best HDD's

Other Thoughts: I have two of these and two of the WD blacks (all 2TB). I have run them side by side in three different systems and this drive always wins in every way.

Transferring the same files to and from each drive (to and from an SSD), this drive is consistently faster in both directions.

I have been a WD user for DECADES, it is kinda hard to say I think this is a superior drive.

Going on a few months now and none of my four drives have failed, so at least there is that.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0033 2TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Best packaged OEM drive I've seen from the Egg. Nice change from
previous years when bare drives were allowed to rattle around in the box.

Cons: Won't spin up. Tried on 3 different systems and controllers, Drive
responded to identification requests, but without spinup no actual SMART
data was available.

Other Thoughts: Lesson here: never order anything you won't be able to test well within the
30 day return period (Premiere gets you no slack). This was 10 days past
that period, so have to pay for shipping RMA back to Seagate. I knew this
but had hoped that the Enterprise model with its 5-year warranty would be
much less likely to have the problems of its cheaper brethren. Sigh.

If it had worked, would have ordered a couple of their 4TB models. Now
that purchase will have to go elsewhere -- I know the other company isn't
necessarily any better, but it's a matter of principle. What else can
anyone do?
