2 out of 5 eggsEthernet port stopped working

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: Ethernet port stops working after 2 years, unstable performance before that.

Other Thoughts: Bought it 2 years ago and had issues when trying to find it from different devices (PS3, a Win7 PC, MacBook Pro...). The remote connection over Internet stopped working a year ago, now it won't connect. The router doesn't even show the NAS connected to its port (tried other devices with same port same cable and worked just fine). It won't connect via USB, so I'll have to open it and connect to a sata port to retrieve all the data. Not very happy with the result.

2 out of 5 eggsOne year Later

Pros: Price, looks

Cons: longevity, or, to be more precise, the lack thereof.

Other Thoughts: lasted a little more than a year. Don't buy this thing if a: you need it to last more than a year, b: you want to store anything of value on it.

2 out of 5 eggsPiece of Junk.

Pros: The case can be cracked open to retrieve your hard drive after the power source dies. There's a great Youtube video showing how to do it. I ended up with a $122 2 TB drive after a 18 months.

Cons: Difficult to set up. Often goes offline. Power source inside case died after 16 months. Terrible support from Seagate. Awful product. Don't buy!

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price and capacity.

Cons: Unit crashed every few weeks requiring a reset and reconfiguration (it was on a ups). Would frequently fail during scheduled backup jobs. After 14 months it locked up and would no longer reset. It is back to Seagate on RMA but have received an email that replacement will be delayed. Fortunately all critical or important documents on it were backed up on another external drive. I doubt I will rely on the Seagate Central RMA unit and plan to purchase a QNAP or WD solution with dual bays so I can run them in a Raid 1 configuration.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend this product to others.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate: Failed After 18 Months

Pros: Worked for a while with very light use..

Cons: After about 18 months it stopped working; no longer recognised on our home network and indicator light blinks to show it's booting but hasn't yet come online .....

Seagate tech support email offered 3 methods to "reset" the unit, but they all failed (after trying each method twice).

Other Thoughts: Think i'll dismantle the case and inspect it inside. Very curious as to whether the drive itself failed or if it's the control circuitry that died ....

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsThis product is a flop

Pros: Sufficient storage capacity.

Cons: Failed after approx. 1 year of light use. I suspect the drive itself is fine.
Seagate offers to exchange the unit but no way to get the data off the drive without spending a lot of money. When you consider the cost of this drive, add in the price of additional backups or data recovery that will be necessary 12 months down the line.

Other Thoughts: -Gets hot even when serving a single client.
-Configuring was a little difficult but I only had to do it once.
-Latency was high, but streaming continuity was fine. That could be mostly due to my network and not this device, though; I am not sure.

1 out of 5 eggs1 year - 1 dead drive

Pros: It was easy to set up. Functioned well for a year

Cons: Disk is dead - PC doesn't recognize, Seagate discovery Software cannot find drive. Seagate Support has indicated that it's a bad drive. Too bad for the files. Seagate recovery services is willing to recover the data for a small fee of $450.

Other Thoughts: I can understand a 1 year life on a drive if it was abused, bounced and dropped, but the drive sat on a shelf by itself with plenty of circulation. I have 10 year old PC's where the drive is happily spinning away... This one just died, taking many files with it. Of course it is the only backup that I have so I'm looking for plan B to recover data

1 out of 5 eggsCrashed Yet Again...

Pros: None yet!

Cons: Extremely Unreliable! I got on the phone with Seagate's rep. After over an hour the drive was up and running. Several days late, flashing green light on the Seagate Central. I've unplugged and plugged it back in, which is all you can do, and the same thing, time after time, flashing green light and no access to the drive at all. It's JUNK!

Other Thoughts: DO NOT BUY ONE!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anonymous,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your Central 2TB Cloud Storage System. Please try resetting the Central drive (keeping the drive powered down for a few minutes) as shown in the support article listed below and check and re-seat all cabling to the drive as well.

5 out of 5 eggsCustomer Service Came Through!

Pros: Customer Support came through for me on this product. I called them and after 1hr & 15 mins of being on the phone with them, it appears the drive is up and is maintaining connectivity. I did not see an option to delete or change my previous reviews so wanted to leave this one.

Cons: had previous connectivity issues. There are apparently issues with the software. Dont use it. Just use Windows to access the drive.

Other Thoughts: I appreciate Wayne at Seagate for fixing the issues I previously had. I apologize to Seagate for the two previous bad reviews!
