2 out of 5 eggsGood Service, Quality and Performance Lacking

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: 3 TB
Good Seagate service, as usual

Cons: Died in a few months

Other Thoughts: I'm wondering if there's a Now Works as It Should firmware upgrade for this? I can't stream a compressed movie wirelessly without stutter. Sure it works OK with a wired connection, but what is this, 1997? Of the 8 devices in our house hooked up to the internet, only 1 is a desktop.

Anyway, the NIC went on this in a few months. When I called support, they had the problem diagnosed in about 5 seconds--I'm guessing as soon as I gave them the model number. I have a new one sitting here thanks to Seagate's solid service, but I'm unsure what to do with it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Matthew,

We first wanted to provide our centralized link for help with setup, usage, installation, and troubleshooting of your Central Shared Storage drive. This includes our complete User Guide. Please reference the link below:

http://ow.ly/kA3Q5

We wanted to provide some suggestions to optimize your network performance. First, please make sure that your computer is connected to your router with a CAT-6 cable and that you are not using WiFi. WiFi is much slower than using an Ethernet cable. Also make sure that your Ethernet card on your computer, router, and any other device connected to your network is using Gigabit ethernet. Your network will only run as fast as your slowest piece of equipment.

Additionally, check to see if there are any firmware updates available for the drive and your router. Please check for any driver updates from the motherboard manufacturer of your computer. Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware for the Seagate Central:

http://ow.ly/x79ps

If you are still experiencing slow transfer rates, try plugging the drive directly into a computer with a Gigabit ethernet card and see if your speeds improve. Should the performance improve, then it is likely there is a network bottleneck unrelated to the drive itself.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact our support staff and we will be happy to assist further:

1 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointing

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: 3TB

Cons: Worked for a couple of months, now all I get is a blinking red light and that's it. As stated above, very disappointing, considering how many Seagate products are still kicking in my house.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointed on Reliability

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Seemed to have worked fine for the first several months of ownership. Setup was relatively easy and transfer of files worked fairly well.

Cons: I can't believe that this relatively expensive item has failed after such a short time. I went in today to retrieve some files that I had stored on the device, only to find out that the device had died. Totally dead, no response. The unit was purchased less than 8 months ago!!!! What a disappointment!!!!! I gave Seagate a LOT more credit. I own several other Seagate drives (They are my drive of choice), but now I'm beginning to give less credit to Seagate's reliability. Now I am afraid of the reliability of my other drives which I also use to backup critical data.

Other Thoughts: This is a 3TB unit, purchased with the hopes of using it for reliable storage of files long into the future. With such a short lifespan, I did not even begin to get to use even a fraction of its storage capabilities.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsFrustrating

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Once setup Ipad found it quite easily. Concept is good for home use.

Cons: Where to begin. Setup did not go smoothly at first, however after the firmware upgrade things did appear to improve. I own an iMac and am basing my concerns on it. 1. The drive must be brought on line manually after each boot using the discovery tool. (I feel the drive as it is always connected should automatically discover. The transfer rate for placing files (video and photo) is very slow. 110 gb took 22 hours. Thinking that hooking it up directly to the mac cat socket would be faster, it was not. Then the fun began, when I hooked up the external WD drive to the Seagate for usb transfer, not only was it very slow, but my mac in all of it’s wisdom wrote the system file “._AppleDouble” in every directory on the WD drive. (when I hooked the drive up to the Seagate apparently the Mac now saw it as a non specific mac drive and does this little unix trick.), at this point because mac has written these files the folders will no longer transfer as the seagate stops the transfer because of the filename. So WD drive back on the mac, and spent hours searching out and deleting the AppleDouble files. Sorry, but as a guy that has had server drives in the past, this whole experience is akin to the old days of trying to work with comm ports and 2400 baud modems. Streaming media was choppy even though my iPad and iMac saw the files and could access them.

Other Thoughts: Please I just want a drive that plugs into my server, automatically mounts and transfers files quickly. Sorry not the drive for me. If this is what one expect, probably the best solution for someone like me (home user) is a new router with a usb port that I can connect my existing external drive to.

2 out of 5 eggsSigh... Seemed like a great deal

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Great Price

Cons: Software is slow, horribly clunky, doesn't work very well, and doesn't have nearly enough options.

Other Thoughts: Live and learn

Manufacturer Response:

Dear N/A,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your Central Shared Storage drive.

Please first check to see if there are any firmware updates to the Central drive as this may help with performance. Click on the link below for instructions:

4 out of 5 eggsGood for basic needs

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: I bought this unit to replace an old 500GB LaCie NAS that served me well for around five years before giving up the ghost. It was less expensive than the LaCie and, at 3 TB, obviously much larger. Its native support of the Apple Time Machine solution was an unexpected bonus (the LaCie, while it supported AFP did not support Time Machine). So it works nicely with both my PCs and my Macs on my LAN. Setup was quite simple.

Cons: As others have noted, its transfer speeds across my network (especially coming in from either of my two wireless subnets) is not always great. Time Machine backup of 30+ GB wirelessly can take 12 hours; the same amount on my 100Mb/sec wired LAN only about 3 hours.

Other Thoughts: As a ham radio operator, I've found it a bit frustrating that the drive cannot tolerate high external RF levels (it basically goes deaf and has to be restarted). Also, shortly after putting it into service, it stopped connecting via AFP from any of my Macs (wired or wireless). But an e-mail to tech support quickly gleaned a link to a newly minted firmware upgrade (not even on their update server at that point) that resolved the issue. I've not attempted to set up remote access nor anything beyond Mac and Windows filesharing locally.

1 out of 5 eggsFurther feedback

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: My data is, at this point, still mostly intact. Software has little configuration and is easy to use for managing it locally. Lots and lots of space for a very low price.

Cons: I've had some more "fun" and have some things I'd like to add to my original review.

have had the unfortunate problem that it seems to have corrupted some of my data. both in data that I've copied to or from it and seems to, in many cases, set it's own permissions on a hard drive that I plugged into one of it's usb slots. As I also mentioned, the format that works for different video formats is extremely limited.

Placed a visible folder in all of my music folders that looks like a system folder with a GUID name to hold thumbnails. Was fixed after a firmware update but I still have to clean up all the folders by hand and more often than not requires explicitly setting inheritance because cascaded inheritance failed.

Major issues with permissions! - Uses a Unix based ACL which does not match the Windows based system identities. Permission denied unless you explicitly give access to a windows identity, which in many cases is impossible without a firmware re-install.

had to re-install the firmware multiple times now and must manually go change permissions at times even though I have manually set permissions and told it to cascade. I cannot take ownership of any of the folders I've created.

Accessing public folder to get at Pictures/Video or Music requires you to have the media in the correct folder for that type of data to be accessed correctly when using certain ways of accessing the data.

Has a problem with special characters. I finally managed to move all the files to a new folder outside the public media type folders, renamed ALL files by appears to still have problems at times which aren't a problem if the files live outside the "music" folder for example.

Access speed is ridiculously slow, even on LAN with N900 router and 1 gb Ethernet connections.
Access with multiple apps or people will just kill it for insanely long amounts of time. Streaming means a 10-15 second pause between every song.

Accessing media via DLNA is ONLY possible via the Public folder. You can access data in folders outside public I believe, but I think it requires some sequence of events that I haven't been able to make work yet.

Using the backup software is the same as using Windows backup in the sense that you can't access the files directly and must be "restored".

Remote access worked at one point and then just stopped for no clear reason and hasn't worked at all since. It also must be set up via a 3rd party software that doesn't seem to work right and is "tacked on" to their paid software.

Has about 3 different pieces of software that I still haven't worked out the purposes and does things like give you a tab that basically does NOTHING remotely useful with one being a web based interface that you get to by clicking on a file in the Public folder root. .

Remote access is both confusing and rarely works right and leaves doubts to if the problem is is you or the software.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I tried again to give this a try and while it's definitely a good price, I must admit that you get what you pay for and I would NOT trust this system with data that I didn't care about losing, didn't want to stream and / or was easily replaced. There's nothing about this that has been pleasant and once again, I would NOT recommend this.

3 out of 5 eggsCould be made better

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Easy to setup for the most part and connects to a Gigabit internal network. Plus ability to access files any whre is a nice feature.

Like the auto firmware update feature. Saves time here.

Cons: The thing I see after spending a few hours on it, is that is not like a real server diver where the main Administrator has full access to all users files and folders.

Plus the fact you cannot customize the permissions for users to access certain folders by a user.

Other Thoughts: If Seagate see's this post. Please make it possible for the main Administrator have super admin access to all like on a Windows computer the built in Administrator as access to all.

Plus make it possible to customize the permissions for users to access certain folders by a user.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Vlee,

Thank you for your review about our Seagate Central drive.

We will pass along your suggestions to our developers regarding full administrator access to all folders, as well as adding greater customization options to the permissions settings . We appreciate your feedback.

3 out of 5 eggsThird Review I must be fair

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Still working

Cons: Still slower than I hoped

Other Thoughts: Well after a lot of different setups I did manage to improve the remote access speed Mac's work pretty well with this unit and Win 7 seems to struggle with reading the packets. Michael is dead on with that review congrats for that using ftp for file transfers instead of the remote access provided is like night and day. I can live with the speed of downloads using ftp until a better firmware arrives (I hope) Better setup options and control of the unit will be a big plus. That being said I added two eggs because I can't put all the blame on the unit now that software, browsers, and os have entered the picture

2 out of 5 eggsAwful

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG3000100 3TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: hasn't lost my data, inexpensive for the space, easy set up if you only want a hands off backup, software is easy to use

Cons: horrible to issues for anyone who just wants to have unrestricted access to their stuff, horrible lack of support for the product, remote access is a joke and seems flaky at best when it works and requires 3rd party site to access it and is limited in number of users. If you just want a network hard drive don't bother. I wanted DLNA but that is so limited by file format its hardly worth it. I would not recommend.
