5 out of 5 eggsVery Reliable

Pros: Been running constantly in my SoHo NAS for almost 6 months now. I picked this for compatibility and enterprise longevity and performance. So far so good.

Cons: A bit on the expensive side, but not too bad.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives

Pros: Faster than the 3tb WD drives that it replaced.

Cons: Maybe the price but for the class if drives, it was expected.

5 out of 5 eggsGood mechanical drive

Pros: Fast for a mechanical drive:
HDTune Write Max 207, Avg 160, Min 86
HDTune Read Max 209.9, Avg 165.2, Min 89.8
HDTune Random Access 15.1 ms, CPU Usage 0.7%

Cons: More expensive than similar drives. However, this drive is supposed to be enterprise quality, so it should be more reliable over time than the less expensive drivers with the same capacity. However, this can only be confirmed over time.

4 out of 5 eggsGood mid-level server drive

Pros: This is a high quality drive with a large capacity that hot-swaps easily. The capacity of this drive makes it a good choice for servers which need a lot of data capacity. It's also a good choice as a very reliable backup drive that can be securely erased once the drive is no longer used in the backup rotations.

Cons: The biggest complaint with this drive is the price to performance ratio. It's being boasted as a server drive but there are several options on faster drives using different technologies (SSD, SAS, 10,000 RPM SCSI). In most cases I find speed is more important than storage capacity. It just all depends on the client and application.

Other Thoughts: These drives would be a great choice in a RAID array on a data server. Especially if you used them in conjunction with SSD drives as the boot disk.

I'm personally using this drive as an external backup in my VMWare ESXi 4.1 Server. I'm passing through an on-board Intel hard drive controller to a Windows 2008 server virtual machine. I then script backups of my network from the Windows 2008 virtual machine to this drive.

This drive successfully hot-swaps in my virtual machine and has improved the speeds of my backups a bit. Backing up via a virtual machine isn't a speed demon - my old WD green drives got about 10meg/sec. This drive is getting 12meg/sec. Neither of these speeds are maximizing the maximum transfer speed of this drive. They are bottled necked by being in a low powered VMWare host. I was pleasantly surprised that this drive improved the speeds at all!

5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENCE!!!!

Pros: This HDD is incredible! This Drive is FAST! U NEED ONE!The Hot Swap is great feature, I use this in my server, so it definately comes in handy!!! The Secure Erase seems to function as stated -quick and easy! Tried to unerase info and couldnt succesfully find a trace of info that I had just erased! SO if that would ever need to be performed, I would trust the procedure on more delicate info! The Specs alone tell you a tale of good fortune!!! :-)

Cons: PRICE TAG! (but it is worth it for highend computing)
For select few people, the driver installation process can be a pain, but if you follow instructions right and your PC is new enough to support, you'll be in love!!! Just make sure yours supports above the 2TB Limit and a SATA 6gb connection and you'll be fine! If your buying this for on an older chipset, it may work with the driver, and older SATA 3gb connections, but if your buying this...your buying it for performance -connect it properly! Then you shouldn't have troubles or major problems!!!

Other Thoughts: I use this in my server (which I use for Data Storage & 6x 24hr Video Survellience Cams) and I couldn't be more pleased with the performance of this drive over the last month I have owned it!!! I can be recording the cams, transferring GB's across network, and even play games without a hiccup from this hard drive....I swear it must be ready to catch fire it moves so fast!!! I connected this perfectly fine to my MSI 990FX, AMD 8350, 16gb DDR3-2133 and been luvn the spacious storage room inside ever since!!!

2 out of 5 eggsFast drive, but only 2Tb

Pros: This is a fast drive, all the specs are matched by write and copy speeds that are fast. I copies from the drive and wrote to the drive separate 9Gb folders of mixed files, and it went quickly. I also copied to and from another mechanical drive and a SSD drive, and in both instances, this drive worked very well. I have no complaints about the speed of the drive. Also, it is very quiet and runs cool. So what is not to love? It turns out about 1Tb.

Cons: This drive came with a 2Tb partition and then 700+G of unformatted space. And no matter what I do, I cannot get that space to format or to merge with the 2Tb partition. In essence. 700Gb of wasted space.

Other Thoughts: That's really about it. A good drive, but something seriously wrong with this drive. I see no one else reporting this, so it must have just been the drive I got. But this is not acceptable.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hard Drive

Pros: * Great Read Speeds Through Drive for a 7200RPM Drive 174MB/s Average , 210 Peak as per 5 runs of HDtunePro.

* 64 Megs of DDR2 Cache

* Operates at under 6.4 watts while idle. Measured 6.3w off of my kilowatt meter. 5.33w during sleep.

* 3 Year Warranty vs 2 Year That you get with Barracuda Drives

* MTBF (Mean time between failures) of 800,000 hours versus 600,000 hours in the Barracuda and has enterprise-class error correction firmware.

* Up to 14% faster data transfer rates than the Barracuda.

* The Constellation ES.3 also uses 9% less power during idle times than the ES.2 (aka previous generation)

* 1 TB platters w 6 Heads, 3 Platters on this model

* Offers native 256-bit AES encryption, with the ability to protect "sensitive" but unclassified data.

* Drive is quiet acoustically, barely audible when spinning.

* Instant Secure Erase. The Constellation CS with a Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) option and Seagate Instant Secure Erase reduces IT hard drive retirement costs. As required, and with a single keystroke you can quickly and easily render the data on the drive completely unreadable and secure.

* Hotplugable Operation per SATA Rev. 3.0 Specifications

Cons: * Due to being 3 TB you should be using formated using (GPT) GUID Partition Table file system. Older OSs may have an issue using it. Then again if you are buying this your system most likely is up to date.

* If NTFS file system is used you be limited 2TB, and will have to partition rest of drive out.

* Drives Price is roughly 30-40% more then Barracuda line. But it does have better feature and warranty.

* If money is no option there are Enterprise grade SSDs that will blow this out of the water. But were talking magnitudes 30-50x of the price for same storage possibly more.

Other Thoughts: As far as hard drives goes this a is great drive. It has everything an novice or power user would need from a mechanical hard drive.

Performance, Capacity, low power usage, quiet.

If you are using this drive for professional reason the cost compared to a Barracuda Drive of Same Size is Worth it. With longer MTBF, and faster read speeds, you cant go wrong.

Compared to the Barracuda Drives I have , and the WD Black Enterprise Grade Drives this thing smokes them all in all concievable metrics. Power Usage, Random Access Speed, Max Reads, Average Reads, MAx Writes Average Write speeds.

After playing with this drive for a little over two weeks, it has become my primary storage drive of choice. Networked Drive in my main PC.

4 out of 5 eggsEncryption support, but at higher cost/GB.

Pros: SMART Identify Data:

Model: ST3000NC000
Firmware: CNS1
LBA: 5860533168
Form factor: 3.5"
RPM: 7200
Interface: SATA
SATA Rev 3.0: Supported

Cache (MB): 64
Commands queue: Supported
Queue depth: 32
NCQ: Supported

Password Protection: Supported
Trusted command set: Supported
Encryption: Supported
Sanitize Features: Supported
Crypto Scramble Extended: Supported

Measured Performance (MB/sec):

OD: 180-190 (nearly empty)
MDa: 175 (half full)
MDb: 140 (three quarter full)
ID: 100 (almost full)

Similar performance to my 3TB ST3000DM001 (i.e. encryption does not cost you performance).

Runs cool and quiet for a 7200 RPM drive (31 C).

Manufacturer Warranty: 3 years.

Cons: Higher cost than the same capacity Hard Drive (without encryption).

Other Thoughts: The critical component of any Hard Disk is reliability/ longevity. Being over 2TB, I formatted as GPT.

Cryptographic erase: A significant feature of SEDs is the ability to perform a cryptographic erase. This involves the host telling the drive to change the data encryption key for a particular band. Once changed, the data is no longer recoverable since it was written with one key and will be read using a different key. Since the drive overwrites the old key with the new one, and keeps no history of key changes, the user data can never be recovered. This is tantamount to an instantaneous data erase and is very useful if the drive is to be scrapped or redispositioned.

4 out of 5 eggsImpressive Drive

Pros: High storage capacity.
Large buffer.
High transfer rate and spindle speed.
Internal Secure Erase feature.

Cons: If GPT is not used, utility is required to utilize full drive capacity.
During long, continuous periods of use, the drive will get warm.

Other Thoughts: Just to be clear, this is absolutely a storage drive. You do NOT want to run it as a boot/OS drive, that type of use will kill this drive short order..
At this point, Windows XP should no longer be considered as an OS to use this drive with.
Windows Vista/7/8 have the option to partition with GPT, instead of Master Boot Record, this should be used.
This is an impressive drive, the large buffer helps smooth file streaming and transfer.
This would be an outstanding and huge HTPC storage drive.
The enterprise-class durability is a huge plus.
Only slightly pricey when considered against similar size drives. On par price-wise with other enterprise drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Performing Enterprise Drive With Encryption

Pros: Self encrypting with Secure erase feature to protect data
Large Capacity
Low power consumption <8w read/write <1w idle
Performance comparable to other enterprise drives
3-year warranty
Quiet

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: First of all, I have to say I have been a WD man. I have several WD Blacks, Velociraptors, blues, and RE drives. I bring this point up because, up until this drive, I have not been impressed with Seagate drives. This drive is comparable in performance to other enterprise drives and flat out beats the WD Black.

Some may feel this drive is a little pricey, but if you compare it against other enterprise level drives with similar performance, it's really a bargain. Does this mean I will now switch my preference from WD to Seagate -- time will tell. If this drive turns out to be reliable, it may just convince me.

The one thing that really catches my attention is the secure erase feature so aside from the performance, that is the one thing I want to cover in this review.

Secure erase is a must have feature. This is a self encrypting drive. Using secure erase changes the encryption key on the drive and the data CANNOT BE RECOVERED. Excellent feature and I will tell you why.

I have purchased computers from businesses and auctions where it stated the drive had been wiped. Most people think they can repartition and format a drive and the data they had on it is gone. Not so. A simple drive recovery tool that I use will recover nearly any drive that you have erased.

I have been able to recover drives that were erased. These drives had very sensitive data including stored passwords for accounts, personal identifying information, and even network passwords and drives mapped to servers using an IP address.

I can tell you if you ever sold or donated an old computer with the hard drive included, anything you have ever written to that drive is recoverable. I never sell old drives. I perform a low level format and then destroy the drive. Your personal information is more valuable than the cost of a hard drive.

With Seagate instant secure erase, you run the Seagate Tools, Advance Options, and choose secure erase. You need the 32 character PID on the drive and the drive is erased almost instantly. By changing the encryption key, the data cannot be recovered. Wiping a drive through encryption is the most secure way to destroy the data without destroying the drive. Unless, of course, you use one of the secure erase utilities that could take many hours or even days to completely wipe the drive.

Bottom line: Good performing drive comparable to other enterprise drives. The 3 year warranty for peace of mind for the money you spend. And the feature that really sells this to me is the drive encryption technology built in with instant secure erase. I actually reviewed this drive expecting to fine some Cons, but I really could not find anything that would keep me from buying this drive.

Seagate sold me on this one.
