Proven Quality and Performance
Desktop HDDs are the world's most popular desktop storage solutions. With consistent quality and performance-enhancing innovations and features like native command queuing and perpendicular recording, Seagate delivers time - and time again. Additionally, Desktop HDDs are produced using the most sophisticated manufacturing process in the industry, with a focus on environmental stewardship. Advanced power modes enables you to save more energy while in idle states - without sacrificing performance. Plus, 70% or more of the materials used to build Desktop HDD drives are recyclable.

Maximizes Hard Drive Storage Densities
Desktop HDD, 1TB-per-disk technology incorporates 340,000 unique tracks in the width of a single inch. This incredible storage density drives new capacity possibilities and lowers your total storage costs.

Seagate AcuTrac technology enables storage densities with accurate reading and writing to nano-sized tracks that are only 75 nanometers wide! That's about 1/500th the size of the period at the end of this sentence.

The Size and Performance You Want
You get more bang for your buck with the industry's first 1TB-per-disk hard drive technology.

Your drive is up to 45% faster than the last generation thanks to Seagate OptiCache technology. OptiCache technology combines the latest advances in hard drive microprocessors, DRAM, and proprietary caching algorithms resulting in great performance improvements for you.

Go Beyond 2TB with DiscWizard Software
The sure way to get native access to hard drives bigger than 2TB is to adopt the new BIOS standard called UEFI. If you're not there yet, Seagate has an alternative.

Free DiscWizard software from Seagate provides you a means to effectively utilize your 3TB, 4TB, or 6TB Seagate Desktop HDDs, even with Windows XP and using the standard PC BIOS

What's in the box

1 out of 5 eggsToo bad it didn't work.

Pros: Worked the first time I plugged it in, High capacity, reasonable price.

Cons: After less than 3 months this HDD crashed and burned. No warning, no odd noise, just POW and done. Not happy I have to deal with Seagate (and pay the return postage for their busted equipment). I also hate the fact I bought a brand new HDD and now after their equipment has failed under less than nominal usage I get a REFURB model as compensation. I've seen this before and I know I'll see it again but companies need to realize if a consumer paid FULL retail price for a brand new piece of hardware and it fails I expect to get an equal replacement NOT a repaired drive! If I wanted a refurb I would have bought a refurb! I'll probably go back to WD as I seem to have better luck.

4 out of 5 eggsGoing strong

Pros: These are going strong, I own 2 of these. Not sure long term, hence the 2 stars, but they are performing well

Cons: They are doing well but I'd only give 5 stars after it works past its warrenty

Other Thoughts: Je Suis Charle

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Drive with Plenty of Space

Pros: Tons of space, Low noise when in use, and it's pretty fast coming out of it's low power state. No data corruptions or sector failures so far!

Cons: None so far

1 out of 5 eggsIntentional obfuscation

Pros: It's a hard drive.

Cons: Intentional obfuscation of the rotational speed. It's listed nowhere in the specs on NewEgg, nor the Manufactuerer website (in any spec doc listed their either).

To blame this on the end user when they're obviously INTENTIONALLY HIDING THE SPEED is ludicrous. This is what you get though when there are only two garbage manufacturers left. Once WD is allowed to merge wholly with HGST, It's over. Just plan on chucking drives every year or so.

Other Thoughts: Seagate is a shell of what they used to be. Garbage company but do you have any options? Welcome to the future, were everything is cheap garbage.

5 out of 5 eggsHave Held Up

Pros: Had multiple failures/returns with another co's 4tb drives, so having these run perfectly for the last 19 months has been a treat. Command Line system / media frontend, so not a regular desktop, not sure about speed/etc. other things.... don't care... just wanted SPACE and reliability.

Cons: paid a little premium for the extra tbs over 4

Other Thoughts: Have 2 of these running in mdadm raid0, 24/7 since April of '13... so far so good. have a script running which reboots maybe once or twice a week, so they have gone through the full power cycle repeatedly

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Lots of space, no issues with windows 8 or qnap ts212. Primary purchase was to backup the TS212. Formatted under win8 and plugged it. Fully backed up the TS212 over night.

Cons: none yet

3 out of 5 eggsAnnoying software, not that quiet

Pros: Fast - over 100MB/s via eSATA cable
Huge

Cons: If you don't have a UEFI BIOS, you won't be able to access more than 2TB of the drive on Windows. To access the full capacity, you need to use the Seagate DiscWizard software, which is pretty terrible.

First off, there are two version, and it's unclear what the differences are:
http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/218619en
http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/discwizard-master-dl/

Second - both are stupendously large downloads. I just need a driver, not whatever bloatware they fit in a 150MB download!

Third - took me 4 attempts to finally manage to install DiscWizard.

Fourth - it installed no less than 4 services. No idea what they do. Only one is obvious to identify later, Seagate Scheduler2 Service.

---

Other reviews mention the quiet operation - that's generally true. But when the heads need to park/unpark, the noise is quite annoying.
