5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: Lots of space, no issues with windows 8 or qnap ts212. Primary purchase was to backup the TS212. Formatted under win8 and plugged it. Fully backed up the TS212 over night.

Cons: none yet

3 out of 5 eggsAnnoying software, not that quiet

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: Fast - over 100MB/s via eSATA cable
Huge

Cons: If you don't have a UEFI BIOS, you won't be able to access more than 2TB of the drive on Windows. To access the full capacity, you need to use the Seagate DiscWizard software, which is pretty terrible.

First off, there are two version, and it's unclear what the differences are:
http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/218619en
http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/discwizard-master-dl/

Second - both are stupendously large downloads. I just need a driver, not whatever bloatware they fit in a 150MB download!

Third - took me 4 attempts to finally manage to install DiscWizard.

Fourth - it installed no less than 4 services. No idea what they do. Only one is obvious to identify later, Seagate Scheduler2 Service.

---

Other reviews mention the quiet operation - that's generally true. But when the heads need to park/unpark, the noise is quite annoying.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive!

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: 1TB platters
Quiet
Cool
Efficient
Decent sized Cache

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I rarely buy "Retail" kits as I don't ever need the extras , but these when on sale for same as a barebone so I nabbed 2 running in Raid 1 or mirror setting in Win7. Works great as all my Seagate drives do. I've been buying Seagate drives for over 15 years and have yet to have any of my 35TB worth of drives fail. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: 4TB of storage that i am using for my movie archive, it does the job just like its supposed to. Ive had the HDD for over a month now and everything is working as smoothly as possible.

Cons: Formatted to around 3.6tb, but that's to be expected.

Other Thoughts: Ive had many Seagate drives and i have never had a problem with any of them, Seagate is a respectable company and if you are deciding between this one or a WD drive choose whichever one is cheaper because they are both of the same quality.

Download the software from the website so you can utilize all 4 tb's. Otherwise it will only show up as 2.

4 out of 5 eggsRecognized Out of the Box

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: win7 running on a fairly old i7 asus sabertooth 58 recognized the full 4tb without having to adjust anything special in windows (just use GTU(?) to format the partition. does the job.

Cons: not the fastest read/write speeds, but let's be honest, this is a value hdd.

Other Thoughts: it's new so cannot comment on longevity. purchased as part of a project to convert old gaming rig with a spacious case into home server. :-)

4 out of 5 eggsFast and cheap

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: Inexpensive
Fast, 135MB/s sustained xfer
Quiet spindle and seek*

Cons: *occasionally makes a loud scratching noise when unparking the heads.

2 year warranty is among the lowest out there.

Other Thoughts: My old Hitachi 3TB made this type of noise randomly while sweeping the platters, but the Seagate is even louder and it can be jarring in a quiet room.

In regards to support, WD Red has a 3 year warranty for the same price and is rated at 24/7 use. I regret not buying the Red even though it is about 10% slower. You can't put a price on data.

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: Silent, HUGE, cheap, got it with shell shocker deal. All my steam games fit, all 100 of them and they run without a hitch. Stays cool also.

Cons: None

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: Ive had one of these for about 10 months, no issues so far. Using a few hours at a time as htpc storage.

Cons: not 7200 but probably saves on power

5 out of 5 eggsRuns like a ghost

This review is from: Seagate STBD4000400 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive – Retail Kit

Pros: High capacity
Very quiet
Low power

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this back in May of 2013, except for a few minutes of power black out, it has been running 24/7 for 8 month straight, and its still very quiet.

Typical transfer rate is around 150MBytes/sec
