5 out of 5 eggsPretty happy here

This review is from: Seagate STBM4000100 4TB Business Storage 1-Bay NAS

Pros: Have to say, we bought one of these and are quite happy with it. Having said that, we are not using any of the "cloud" or media server features whatsoever, we are just using it as a dumb NAS drive on our network to house backup images of our local workstations. It performs very admirably in that regard. We have had it for about six months, and I think in all that time it has only got hung up once and needed a hard reboot.

Cons: no cons that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: don't know why people are having so many problems, maybe they are expecting too much. perhaps all the cutting-edge add-on features need to mature, but the basic product is solid.

1 out of 5 eggsLasted 6 months

This review is from: Seagate STBM4000100 4TB Business Storage 1-Bay NAS

Pros: Easy setup, always spinning so do not have to wait for spin up, average transfer speeds, lots of room

Cons: This morning after boot up, the drive was not found. The drive was dead, the usual clicking noise. I've never before had a drive run fine for 6 months and then die, usually DOA or several years later. Probably the always on feature is not such a good idea. I will be leery of the RMA replacement.

Other Thoughts: If you buy an inexpensive drive to store media files, it is probably better to get one that spins down when not in use to lengthen the life. I buy cheap drives and always back up to two of them. This is the first time I've ever one crash so soon.

1 out of 5 eggsFoolish purchase

This review is from: Seagate STBM4000100 4TB Business Storage 1-Bay NAS

Pros: Easily managed and found with win7.

Cons: Where do I start? Straight out of the box the power connection had very poor construction quality. Finding the words 'Made In China' relieved the mystery. The power connection later became so poor that if you even stepped next to the unit on our hardwood floors the vibration would reset the drive. Copying 200gb of music files somehow allocated 700gb! AND took 3 days to transfer, the second day giving up on the network and directly connecting to the USB slot, BUT zero speed increase. Within the week the system refused the admin password and would allow my sub user (with admin privileges) to view more than the folder structures. A complete waste of 3 good days copying and configuring, ending with a useless paperweight, seized from the poor quality in construction ( the power connection finally toasted and you could hear it shorting just by touching the box). Lastly, this box is NOT Xperia compatible. Not a huge deal with most of my network win7, and drive did show up and configure easily from those. All you can do from xp is view and download, not manage.

Other Thoughts: This product was rushed to market without concern for quality. 4tb is a lot of data to lose or gamble on truly pathetic engineering. I paid $209 shipped and thought at first it was a smart purchase for an my own cloud or home movie/music storage. Not so. A waste go valuable data and time. How much is your time worth?
As a side, last week I noticed Costco selling another version of this as a 4tb NAS with everyday price of $199. Tempting but I've been fooled once. Shame on Seagate. Fooled twice equals shame on me so I'll pass until quality improves.

1 out of 5 eggsUnusable, crashes every time

This review is from: Seagate STBM4000100 4TB Business Storage 1-Bay NAS

Pros: Nice design, great looking NAS interface.

Cons: NAS crashes every time I use it, disconnects from shared drive every time during a backup, documentation is poor to say the very least. NAS can not find shared drive 50% of the time when u want to start a backup. No port number associated with the NAS attached to the router?????? Never will buy again NAS anything from Seagate. My Sinology NAS units are flawless.

Other Thoughts: What a waste of time and effort.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Small Business NAS Solution

This review is from: Seagate STBM4000100 4TB Business Storage 1-Bay NAS

Pros: Easily interfaces well with our company network. Data transfer rate is acceprtable. Overall we are quite pleased with the functionality of the relativley inexpensive NAS.

Cons: When accessing NAS data from the cloud (Tappin.com) the interface is very slow to load/update menus from both our desktop machines and smartphone initerfaces.

Other Thoughts: I dinged the product 1-egg due to the painfully slow cloud interface. Local acces to data and data transfer rates are fast enough.
This is a good little NAS solution for a home/small office application. Time will tell how dependable the network storage device proves to be.

Thanks Newegg!
