1 out of 5 eggsSeagate Disaster

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Low price

Cons: Even lower reliability.

Other Thoughts: I have numerous 3 and 4 TB Seagate drives. Two at about a year old have outright failed and diagnostics on others indicate they have problems. It appears that Chinese manufacturing facilities have quality control issues.

A month ago I dropped a grand on Hitachi replacement drives

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet and gigantic for a great price

Cons: Has a bit of trouble playing my 1080p @ 60fps GoPro videos. It's great for storage, but it's not the fastest drive.

The videos still play, but sometimes there are parts that glitch. I closed the video and started it back up to make sure it wasn't the video file.

Also, big games like BF3 take a bit longer to load, but I'm not dissatisfied with it's performance given the price :)

Other Thoughts: Overall, it's a great drive for what I bought it for (Storage), but if you want performance, maybe "raid 0" two of them or purchase a different drive geared towards speed.

5 out of 5 eggsWarning

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large Hard Drive

Cons: Be carefull, not all computers can recognize 4tb drives. I bought this to use in an external USB hard drive enclosure and it would only show up as just under 2tb reglaredless of what computer it was connected to. It would only work internally on one of my PC's. My understanding is that it is due to (for the internal connection at least) bios support. I did not try to update my bios, just settled for putting it in the PC it worked in.

1 out of 5 eggsDoA......

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 4 TB (duh)... Not that I would know though.... It reads unallocated at 128GBs... xD

Cons: 4 sec buzzing issue - event log says not writing 0x0. Used Seatools for diagnositics. Won't pass Short DST. Tried some command prompt tricks... no dice (running as data drive on Win8 64 bit. Should be no pre-reqs for this drive) OH! and... failed initialization with some I/O device error. Attempted in 3 different comps. (mobo, cables, etc.)

Other Thoughts: RMA'ing and hoping rep lasts for some time. This is my Steam Games HDD. (dedicated)

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of space for collections. Use them in Drobo and have bought 1 at a time over the past couple of years. No problems yet. None have died.

Cons: none yet.

1 out of 5 eggsScared of Seagate HDs for years and having valid reasons for that

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: one would think that 4TB 64MB cache SATA 6.0Gb/s drive should be fantastic

Cons: I can see so many DOA reviews, and COMPLETELY ZERO response from manufacturer (Seagate), that I have very valid reasons to avoid Seagate hard drives at any cost. It cannot be blamed on Newegg for packaging (they got it improved A LOT). I'm deeply distrustful to Seagate for a couple of years now, and that's based on personal bad experiences with their drives. Seeing so many reviews mentioning DOA or seeing the drives fail way before end of warranty, and with absolutely no responsibility from the manufacturer to respond to any of the reviews (ZERO) makes me convinced that whenever it comes to non-enterprise overpriced HDs, Seagate keeps milking customers for money with shoddy drives and non-existent quality control for the past 10 years (and I bought over 30 drives during that time). My Western Digital hard drives fail too, but for every 1 WD drive I get 5 Seagate drives becoming very expensive paperweights (not mentioning value of lost data).

Other Thoughts: no, I didn't buy Seagate drives for the past few years, and I don't intend to. stick with Western Digital - even the Green series is more reliable than the 1-2 year "warrantied" Seagate desktop and NAS drives.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

3 out of 5 eggsBargain but slow storage

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: We've installed six dozen of these in RAIDs and arrays as data and system-backup drives, and haven't had significant failure rates on them.

These are slow-to-access but once that occurs, the data-transfer is a good value considering the price (not as fast as a 7200rpm but better than their half-the-price cost).

Cons: These are slow-to-access. Users report waiting "a long time" waiting for these drives to display folders and files, or accept any access-command. Open up a file-manager, click on one of these drive, take a few breaths and the seconds tick by and finally the User can do COPYs, etc.

If a User has 7200rpm data-drives side-by-side, the complaints mount simply because of the constant comparison. The trick is to give those users all of one speed or all of the other!

Other Thoughts: Data Transfer rates may be a few percentage-points lower than their 7200 brethren, but considering these are oftgen 50% less expensive, the "value" of data storage and backups should be considered.

1 out of 5 eggs2 did not survive Raid5 Initialization

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Big, Cheap.

Cons: 2 failures on 4 drive order within the week.

Other Thoughts: Have had western digital in my rigs since 2009.

Had decided to go with Western after having bad experiences in the past before 2009 with seagates. Decided to try them again.
Failed badly not even surviving the first initialization of a raid array. Makes me wonder if you have one drive that fails on the array the other drive would probably not survive the rebuild...thus probability of losing all data on a redundant array very very high.
I feel like i just wasted 700$ on a doomed backup rig.
