5 out of 5 eggsGetting more.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Price, dependable, quiet.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: Have two of them since about mid 2014, setup with mdadm (Linux software raid*) in Raid 1 right now. Plan on getting four more of them very soon for a raid 10** setup.

Retention is more important to me than space*** and I trust these drives***.

* Even though my MSI A88XM MB supports HW raid.
*** Yes I have offline backups. Just ALOT easier this way.
**** So far :) Gotta give em credit though. Best large drives I have used yet and I have used a lot.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I got this for $160...Which is an amazing price for 4TB.
4TB is a nice amount of storage for all my steam games
64MB Cache and SATA 6Gb/s, and decent enough to load games within a reasonable amount of time.

Cons: Only 3.74TB. You companies need to stop using 1000byte metrics and use the 1024byte standard. We're being lied to, because of "technicalities" This is not Europe or everywhere else that measures everything in 10's, 100's, 1000's. This is computers, where we do things in 2's, 4's, 8's, 16's, 32's, 1024's, etc...

My steam library is 730+ games, some of which I cannot install without consuming the last 50GB of my free space, which I wouldn't have to worry about if hard drive companies followed the same logic as RAM companies.. 8GB == 8GB 8GB =/= 7.808GB....

Other Thoughts: Need to get a 4.5 TB hard drive just to get a true 4TB hard drive.. Capacity matters to all of us.

2 out of 5 eggsEh..

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cost per GB, cheaper than WD.
No noise

Cons: Head damage within a year of normal usage.
5900rpm slow (Yes you can feel it compared to Seagate's own 1TB 7200rpm)

Other Thoughts: Going to try WD.
Lesson learned - back up your data no matter how insignificant and replacable they may seem at the moment haha.

5 out of 5 eggs1 Year Raid 5 Perc H700

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: We are running 8 of these in a RAID 5 on a Dell Perc H700 and have had 0 issues.

With a good raid card these drives run FAST while staying cool.

We have yet to have one die.

Cons: None at all

5 out of 5 eggsSize and Price

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Love all the space. Will take me some time to fill this with pictures and videos that seem to grow exponentially in number due to everyone in the family owning a smart phone these days.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Over the years I've bought a number of Seagate and WD larger HDD for use in RAID systems (RAID6 and RAID1).

I've had trouble with both companies. Sometimes the drive immediately fails. I had a few 3 Tb Seagate drives that failed after 1 year. Seagate warranty was easy to use and covered their replacement, but I got back a refurbished drive. Not a brand new drive.

I don't feel the extra expense for Enterprise drives is worth it. So I have to plan for and put up with the occasional HDD problems that seem to come with all of the larger sized HDDs.

1 out of 5 eggs2 dead drives - waste of money

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: none

Cons: I bought two additional Seagate 4TB drives to add to my NAS because I had two others. The model numbers weren't exactly the same but I figured these would be fine and they don't have to match. Unfortunately they were never detected properly by the NAS and I figured it was an issue with the NAS. A few months after moving/job change and I try again to find that these two drives will not even show up in Disk Mgmt directly connected to my system. Two in a row? I'm not buying these anymore.

Other Thoughts: Other thoughts? Seagate sucks.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Value for Medium Performance

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -Good value.
-Quiet.
-Relatively cool.

Cons: -Slow rotational speed gives weaker performance.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive principally for archiving video projects for my YouTube channel. It's a very good value in the 4TB size range. It's not 7,200RPM and it's performance is so-so but it's still faster than a Western Digital Green series and slightly cheaper to boot. I would not recommend this for a PC where fast loading times are important, such as a gaming PC. If you need that use and can't afford an SSD, the Western Digital Black is still the best performance bang for buck in rotating drives in my opinion. However, for archival use or data that doesn't require rapid access times, this does the job well.

Seagate has a reputation for being the least reliable drive manufacturer and most negative reviews of their products cite this as the reason. I have a Western Digital Black as my gaming drive but I have three archival drives, all of which are Seagate and they've all been rock solid, largely running 24 hours a day for weeks or months at a time. That's only my personal experience but I've used a lot of hard drives in my day and have been happy with these so far. Good value for a mid-grade performance drive and worth buying if that's your use case.
