4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I bought 6 of these hard drives and using them for 3 years now in the 2 servers I have. They do make noise after a year but very rare. I never had mine failed on me.

I use Linux and when I get these hard drives I do a non destructive lower level format. This process takes 5 days per hard drive in SATA III connection. If I do not do this lower level format then around 50gb to 120gb or 1tb the hard drive fails to write and you hear the head keep moving back and forth which is very bad and can physically damage you drive forever.

My guess is these drives are mass produced and it cost a lot to leave them on the factory to do a 5 days lower level format so they let the end user do it.

Cons: 5 to 6 days of lower level format which means your computer have to be on uninterrupted and your hard drive have to be cooled which your case should already provide. If your computer reboots in the process then another 5 days are lost.

Other Thoughts: I egg off for the noise I really hear from time to time. I use these drives for: web services, picture storage, movie streaming to my local roku, and backup. 3 of them in primary server and the other 3 on secondary server doing network mirror of primary server so if I loose a hard drive or a computer I can continue my work.

4 out of 5 eggsDrive

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This drive has very nice amount of storage. Very basic packing, but that is fine by me since I am wanting just the actual part.

Cons: Did not realize the drive was only a 5400 RPM drive. If I had known that, I would have bought 2 3-TB 7200RPM drives. However the read/write seems to do great for Virtual Machine storage.

4 out of 5 eggswork well if you are lucky

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Silent, fairly speedy, no dead sectors, no issues, after you get good units. Considered that I had to replace one out of two, the odds of getting good drives are not very good

Cons: Ordered two units. One failed out of the box (no spin) and was replaced by Newegg with no issues (except for shipping costs for the defective unit). Replacement was OK, working in a WJS2011 for over one year with no issues.

Other Thoughts: 50% failure rate for brand new units is not acceptable, but reading through the reviews, it looks like it is the new norm, not an exception. Having to pay to return defective out of the box parts is a hassle I could do without. May want to do a stress test as soon as you get the units, to weed out the early failurs while you are under newegg's warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Hard to think of any when it arrives DOA

Cons: Dead on arrival.

Other Thoughts: Every now and then I'll get suckered into buying a Seagate Drive. While I know all drives are subject to occasional failures my experience with Seagate has been disappointing often enough that I'm taking the time to ding them with this review. When I powered up this drive, I immediately heard that scraping/grinding noise that tells you you're in trouble. Disk Management couldn't format the drive because of an I/O error so I packed it up and RMA'd it. No more Seagate for me... at least for a while.

1 out of 5 eggsNot even a year's use out of it.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: When Drives worked, were not as chatty as I'd thought they'd be, running 24/7.
When Drives worked, drives offered plenty of storage for the price.

Cons: Drives didn't even last a year! I bought two of these last year on Black Friday through the NEwegg.com iPad app, scoring them for $139 each.
They are NOT worth the money I paid for them. When they began to fail,
first, the drives would continually unmount, and then start throwing data into a
"Lost+Found" folder., which you could usually drag back out and put back in
it's proper place. But when they fully failed, each drive lost over 20GB of data that is unrecoverable using software data recovery programs, including Seagate's own Data Recovery software.

I am now sending these off for RMA today, but I'm VERY leery of using the replacements, because I got so badly burned on these two drives. In comparison, I ended up scavenging the data off of these and put that onto
two WD Green 4TB drives, and so far they have been rock solid ( and much quieter)

Other Thoughts: It's very telling that Seagate is now offering Data Recovery software for their drives, as well as only offering only two year warranties on larger than 3TB drives. Buyer beware.....

1 out of 5 eggsbulk bare buyer b u know the rhyme

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: no delay in arrival after order. no delay in throwing read write errors. no delay in immediately requesting and receiving refund. no delay in ordering a nonbulk nonbare upgrade.

Cons: patiently waiting retail boxen 4tb. missing the long lost option to buy a Conner hdd. wishing factory QA wasn't an apology but a check for write errors.

Other Thoughts: formatted ok. sunny seasidetools said smart test ok. but wasn't ok. failed simple read write soak testing. u should use actual diagnostic tools on hdd during the perishable full refund window. this experience honed and refocused both my price value point and brand decision processes.
