1 out of 5 eggsWill not initialize

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None

Cons: Have had it for just over 30 days and have never been able to get my PC to recognize it. Thought it was something wrong with the PC and wasted the first 30 days troubleshooting that end of the issue. Using disk management in Win 7 Pro, disk will not initialize. Disk recognized in Bios but never by Windows no matter what drivers were used.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jeremy,

We apologize for the problem with your 4TB Desktop drive. Please try our self-booting SeaTools drive diagnostics listed below, as this will determine the drive health:

5 out of 5 eggs3 years hard labor

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 3 years up time. They are budget desktop drives but I had 2 in RAID 1. They ran 24/7 doing video editing, gaming, DVR, Media serving, archive, and so on. I was lucky though. You really need better drives for that stuff or they will fail fast.

Cons: Random quirkiness. Can't explain it. They just didn't always perform consistently. I may have had a game crash or two to blame on them too, but I always ran them hard. It is more an observation than a con.

Other Thoughts: Buy the right drive if you are a professional or a serious gamer. I am updating this round to 4TB SSHDs. I will also push my Media serving and archive onto a NAS with proper NAS drives when I have the money. I should fork over for an A/V drive, but for home DVR it is hard to know what to get. Surveillance drives are close but I have 2 video streams at most and tons of playback and editing. I hope the SSHDs do the trick, but do your own research.

4 out of 5 eggsKeeping my fingers crossed

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good price per gig, heavy drive with a solid case.

Cons: 1st drive was DOA to the point of BSODing a Win8 machine after a 10 min boot hang. RMA'd for a replacement drive and so far it's healthy.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Great price for the capacity. Seagate's always been a trusted brand.

Cons: Takes a little bit to spin up when accessing as my secondary drive, which can be annoying, but something I can defiantly live with.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive Failed Right After 2Year Warranty

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: The disk worked as expected for the first 2 Years of ownership. No issues at all... The first 2 Years... See Cons.

Cons: Out of the blue, After 2 years of almost 99% uptime. This Hard disk crashed on me. It's in a Software raid (ZFS) so I didn't lose any data. But the disk stop responding... I assumed the disk isn't that old... It must still be under warranty. But it looks like Seagate only has a 2 Year warranty and disks now... And it failed 2months after the warranty expired. I'm pretty upset about this. I used to buy Seagate because of their 5Year warranty. I didn't even check when I bought this disk that they reduced it down to 2 Years... Ugh...

3 out of 5 eggsdrive died in 3 days

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's a great value

Cons: One of the hard drives died within 3 days. I had replaced a drive in my drobo and had rebuilt with it. When the second seagate went in, the first one failed meaning I was 2 drives down and I lost about 10TB of data. I was not a happy camper. When I was investing the drive I found that it had all sorts of bad sectors and there was a super loud clicking noise.

Other Thoughts: The box they came in was packed amazingly and I've never had a bad seagate before so I had high hopes. I unboxed the drives within feet of the drobo so I know nothing happened to the drive between the box and the device. I'm in the middle of RMA right now so I'll see how the next one fairs. I've learned my lesson and am using dual disk redundancy now. I just never expected something like a bad drive to be shipped from Seagate.

4 out of 5 eggsA Rash of Uninformed Reviews on Here

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD.15 ST4000DM000 4TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Have had one of these running as a backup. Fairly quiet. Slower than a few bigger HGST drives I have, But Faster than an old 7200 rpm WD Black I have. I would say it's a decent all around drive. Works in Win7 just fine.

Cons: None to speak of. I don't use it as a very active drive. I set a bunch of stuff to send to it, then go to bed. That has never failed, so...
