1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Item was DOA when received. I waited to long after ordering to install it for new egg to replace it but luckily the manufacturer is going to replace it. It might be a good drive when working but sad that its completely dead brand new out of the box.

Cons: Item was DOA when received

Other Thoughts: Item was DOA when received

5 out of 5 eggsCool, quiet, works great, lasts long

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -runs cool with minimal airflow
-completely silent
-decent performance

Cons: -none so far

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these drives in an HTPC/backup server. One is the main recording drive and the other is used for daily backups. The recording drive gets 10-12 hours of active use a day and the backup drive about an hour a day. I just noticed they have just over 18000 and 19000 hours on them and they just work. A quick check just showed no errors, no relocated sectors and only about a 10 degree C rise in temperature rise in a well ventilated but fan free environment. It's a very quiet system and these drives add no sound at all.

2 out of 5 eggsFunctional but sounds like a jet engine

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - Powers on and holds data
- No bad sectors
- Cheap

Cons: - As stated in review title, it is LOUD. In fact, this is literally by far the loudest component in my system with a Fractal H7 CPU Cooler, GTX 460, and 650W PSU. By far.
- Makes intermittent clicking noises that I have never heard on other brand HDDs. Inspires very little confidence in the long term health of the drive.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to RMA it a buy a better drive even if it is more expensive. If you need a dirt cheap drive this one is functional, but understand the downsides before moving forward.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Matthew,

Our 4TB Desktop drive should not make loud noises while in operation. Please try running our "SeaTools for Windows" diagnostics to determine the overall drive health:

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive, bad reviewers

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It works as it's supposed to, seems nearly as fast as my 7200RPM drives.

Cons: Newegg's policy of letting foolish reviews get posted...

Like giving a BARE DRIVE a ONE EGG rating because it came in a SEALED antistatic bag and not a RETAIL BOX.... "HUR HURR REFURBISHED! DRIVE SUCKS!!"

or people who give it a ONE EGG rating because they dun goofed up and initialized a 4TB drive as MBR instead of GPT then rant "I bought a 4TB drive, not a 2.2TB drive.... DRIVE SUCKS! NEEDS ZERO STARS RATING!!"

or people who give it a ONE EGG rating because "It's only 3.63TB not 4TB... GUBMENT STEALIN MUH TBs!... DRIVE SUCKS ONE STAR!!!"

Other Thoughts: proof of technical competency should be required before being allowed to post reviews.. or at least anything lower than a 3-egg rating should be screened for user errors... it's a shame that perfectly good products have their ratings skewed by incompetent users

1 out of 5 eggs3 out of 5 were DOA. Be aware of this product.

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: NONE

Cons: The quality were not consistent at all. I ordered 8 before and had no problem, but this time. 5 out of 3 were DOA.

Other Thoughts: Not very good support from Customer servers. The customer servers promise to send replacement out to us with next day shipping and we will receive it by Monday, but they did not bother to send it out at all. Be aware of ordering this product.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Masaru,

5 out of 5 eggsI really want to buy two 4 terabyte drives for a decent price. One year warranties are pathetic. Any advice guys?

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: What happened to 5 year warranties on hard drives? I would feel safe with even three years. One year? That is ridiculous. Why even bother having a warranty period? I had old SCSI Cheetahs and Barracudas that were incredible drives. I am not trying to pick on Seagate because it seems like all manufacturers are racing to the bottom of the barrel as far as standing behind their products. Do I need to step up to enterprise class drives for a decent warranty?

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsCannot find support for Beyond 2tb

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's probably a good hard drive

Cons: Cannot read anything over 2tb in windows 10. There is plenty of support for windows Vista and windows 7. It says in the description that it's an easy transfer to beyond 2tb. Not So! Maybe if you're using the new Uefi Bios. Most of us are not. Seagate has no support number or forums that i can find. I cannot find anything on google either that deals with windows 10 or how to get this drive to read over 2tb. Not happy with Seagate. This is a first

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Christopher,

There may be a variety of computer or operating system limitations when using drives larger than 2.2TB. Make sure the drive is set up with a GPT partition. The following support article outlines these limitations and provides some suggestions for resolving them:

5 out of 5 eggsNo issues, big drives for price

This review is from: Seagate Desktop HDD ST4000DM000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I ordered to expand storage capacity. Was hesitant to have mechanical hard drives shipped, but I thought I'd give it a shot. I chose "In-Post" as the delivery option. By 4am the night of my order, the drives were already delivered. I picked them up the following day and noted - the seller did a fantastic job packing the drives in special bubble wrap containers, then in an individual box each, then more bubble wrap, and a larger exterior box. Absolutely no damage to the box (not even a mark) by the shipper. Very impressed with the shipping job.

Anyway, about the drives. I ran several iterations of Badblocks stress testing, followed by extended (long) SMARTCTL tests. No bad sectors noted on either drive (all tests done on a headless linux box running Ubuntu Server).

The read/write speed at the beginning of the test is around 150-160 mb/sec. I suppose as the drive head moves toward the centre of the platter and relative rotational velocity is reduced, the speed slows to around 90 mb/sec. Not bad for 5900 RPM drives.

I should note - you will want to keep light air circulation on these on such long duration read-write cycles. Without a fan, you WILL hit 40C+ in a 24C room, but temps will stay under 30C with some light cooling.

Also - drives are quiet.

No issues so far (fingers crossed, plus backups of everything)

Cons: None so far
