5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive for data!

This review is from: Seagate ST500LM000 500GB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Thin SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: Slightly faster than a standard 5400 drive.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I originally got a WD Blue 500GB, (WD5000LPVX), as a data drive on my Thinkpad X230 tablet, (I'm using a Samsung EVO mSATA drive for my OS). I was really dissatisfied with the transfer speeds on the Western Digital drive and I noticed a lot of buffering when streaming videos to my Chromecast. Taking advantage of Newegg's excellent return policy, I returned the WD to Newegg about two hours after I received it and ordered this drive as a replacement.

Although large blocks of data transfer at about the same rate, I have noticed a lot better performance when transferring small files and folders and I haven't had any problems with buffering while using Chromecast.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't even last 30 days!

This review is from: Seagate ST500LM000 500GB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Thin SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: Nothing.

Cons: The hard drive quit working. I am unable to recognize this product on multiple machines. I'm not exactly sure what happened to it to cause this.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend buying this product. The drive went bad within 2 weeks of having it installed.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed.

This review is from: Seagate ST500LM000 500GB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Thin SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: Worked well while it worked, less than a year.

Cons: Less than a year after the purchase of a Dell alienware laptop with this as the hard drive, the drive failed. I was getting the windows 10 reboot blue screen and after bringing it to a repair shop, they ran some tests and said the hard drive failed. Cost me over $250 to replace with a Western Digital drive.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this drive.

3 out of 5 eggsReplacement Low Performance SSHD Drive for laptops

This review is from: Seagate ST500LM000 500GB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Thin SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: Low Cost, Sometimes faster then a standard hd*

Cons: Miisleading performance figures. Very small SSD /memory cache. slow rotational speed compared to other performance hard drives.
5.9 rating in Windows 7, same as a standard hard drive. I have XP and Windows 7 on my laptop, I have also noticed this drive seems to check out for a few seconds from time to time. This problem goes away if I put my original HD back in. Don't know if its a cache issue in the drive or something else. SMART logs indicate nothing.

Other Thoughts: I originally purchased this drive as an upgrade for a laptop equipped with a 256gb SSD and a 1tb HD. I thought it would enhance the performance of the platform. This was not the case, in fact it actually slowed down the laptop. *For small file transfers and booting it works ok but anything large forget it. Anyway if you are in the same boat consider this, SSD without a doubt will blow this thing away, second a raptor (but that usually wont fit a laptop) third a 7200rpm drive then this drive. It might work well as a second drive for an Xbox One.
If could do it again I would not but this drive but would have instead saved up the extra coin for a REAL SSD,

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

This review is from: Seagate ST500LM000 500GB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Thin SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: When I bought this product I didn't have the money for an SSD, but I was intrigued by the technology. This product is an excellent middle ground between a standard hard drive and an SSD. I bought this for a mid 2011 15 inch Macbook Pro. My boot time was cut in half immediately after installing this thing. I noticed roughly 40% reduced loading times for standard operations (web browsing, opening light programs, etc.). If I open a video game, photoshop, or other intensive editing software the benefit is less noticeable. The drive is dead quiet and power consumption is no different than before.

Cons: This product will not perform like an SSD. It will get close (if you're a light user) but it simply will not transfer data as quickly as an SSD will for all operations. Note that only 8 GB of the 500 GB is NAND memory (the kind that makes a true SSD so zippy).

Other Thoughts: The product didn't come with any other hardware to mount it. This isn't really a con since no mounting hardware is advertised, but it would be a nice addition if seagate sent it with a 2.5 to 3.5 converter and a few laptop mounting screws.

2 out of 5 eggsNice while it lasted

This review is from: Seagate ST500LM000 500GB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Thin SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: Great difference between my old hard drive and this one. Boot times were faster, and even though the overall read and write speeds were slightly slower, the applications I used daily saw nice performance gains.

Cons: Didn't even last me 4 months. Bought this back in August, and ever since I installed it, there were hiccups that occurred once in a while. Never though of it as much since it could've been from installing more and more programs and updates. Eventually startup would take forever, unless I took the hard drive out and put it back in. Now just a couple minutes ago from this review, it began to make clicking and scraping noises, then all of a sudden a BSOD and it won't be detected at all. Tried plugging it into my desktop with a USB adapter and it won't even work there, still with those loud noises

Other Thoughts: Kind of wish this drive would've lasted longer. It wasn't under heavy use so I don't understand why it would give out so quickly. Probably just a faulty drive.

Since it's way past RMA, I have no other choice but to spend more on replacing it. Thinking of getting an mSATA SSD instead and a hard drive.

Remember, always keep a back up!

1 out of 5 eggsDon't believe the hype

This review is from: Seagate ST500LM000 500GB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Thin SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap, a little faster than conventional drives.

Cons: Nowhere near as fast as advertised. Not much of an upgrade

Other Thoughts: You're better off buying a smaller SSD and an external drive. Not very happy with the purchase but at least it didn't make my laptop slower.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anthony,

We would like to note that it may take a number of reboots to notice the full performance benefit of your Laptop Thin SSHD Hybrid drive. This will allow the adaptive memory feature to determine the data that is accessed most frequently and put this data on the high performing SSD portion of the drive.
