2 out of 5 eggsSlow, poor performance

Pros: Good space.

Cons: Where to start. The drive is slow. Very very very slow. So slow that it chokes the laptop to the point of becoming totally unresponsive. At that point, you cannot do anything for about 5 minutes. I've been able to recreate the issue a number of times. The drive has the latest firmware.

Other Thoughts: Other than using as a secondary drive for storage, I don't know what value it really has. It is not well suited as a primary drive for anyone who is seeking any type of performance. This might work for your mom's laptop if all she does is Facebook. For a power user, run. Run fast and far.

5 out of 5 eggsSlow Start

Pros: Worked great on my macbook and was easily partitioned.

Cons: The bootup time for the mac side of my partition would take about 3 to 4 minutes, but this was fixed after running the apple diagnostics tool and now boot up takes about 25 seconds.

5 out of 5 eggsPS4 Drive

Pros: Large Storage

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive one week before the PS4 was released and installed it immediately before setting up my PS4. The drive has worked great and have not had any problems at all. If you are upgrading for a PS4 then its a great buy.

2 out of 5 eggsCan't Handle A Lot Of Data

Pros: Easy installation, fast access speed.

Cons: This drive cannot handle an application in which there are a lot of data rewrites happening over an extended period of time. I installed one on my computer and began to have disk error and repair messages every couple of weeks. Finally, last week it failed totally on the middle of a job. I have the same drive installed in another computer that is not worked as hard. The drive works fine for normal applications but cannot handle a lot of data.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear James S.,

Please try running our SeaTools diagnostics on the drive that is experiencing the disk error and repair messages so we can determine the drive health:

1 out of 5 eggsClicking hard drive

Pros: Faired enough. I would not call it a fast drive by any means but boot time and loading files and folders was never too slow as to be distracting, except for the con

Cons: Clicking clicking

This drive's head has a nasty habit of getting stuck. If I had the tools I'd try replacing the thing myself. The drive stops constantly and has been a nuisance months into my buying this thing. It seems to get a lot worse during any month out of winter. It makes loud clicking noises and crashes the computer and it takes a day or two before it behaves normal again. It never operates as it should for more than two weeks at a time before it has a fit again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Andrew P.,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your Laptop Solid State drive.

Our drive should not be making excessive clicking sounds. We would like to talk with you by phone to determine an available resolution to the problem. 3 out of 5 eggsEconomical but not nearly the SSD speed I was looking for

Pros: Economical, easy to install in RAID 10 configuration on Asus Rampage IV Gene. Very quiet. Gets about 190MB/s on HDDTune large-file read benchmark. Pulls great IOPS scores for short random reads: 144781 IOPS, but only 37 MB/s for sequential 1 MB reads and writes, and dinky 2000 IOPS for random writes.

By far the BEST warranty support rep I have ever dealt with in my life. Robert is amazing. The phone wait was about 20 minutes, but I got a professional and funny Seagate rep. who made the whole process a joy. Got me an exact replacement to keep RAID symmetry, and even checked the firmware compatibility. This is the kind of perk I didn't expect, and didn't even have to ask for (he mentioned it first), and is half the reason I called in rather than going through the website, which doesn't guarantee same capacity, etc. Kudos to Seagate warranty service for this guy.

Cons: One of the four drives has failed in 7 months, undergoing warranty replacement. Drive posts "error" in RAID array bootup, clicking noises.

Haven't noticed any appreciable decrease in Win 7 boot times since installing 4 of these six months ago in a clean Windows 7 installation on a new machine. If repeated use patterns are supposed to optimize speed after a while, I'm not seeing it either in Windows boot or major apps (Adobe, Office).

Other Thoughts: Am I doing something wrong by RAIDing these hybrids?

Still tempted to shell major money for two 1TB pure SSDs in RAID 1 to see if this makes a huge difference in user experience.

System specs:
Hexacore i7-3930K at 3.2 GHz (not overclocked)
32 GB Gskill RAM
Asus Rampage IV Gene mobo
Intel RAID manager

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Eric J,

While our Hybrid laptop drives can be used for Desktop RAID arrays of 3 drives or less, we would recommend using our Enterprise drives for larger RAID arrays. Here is a link to these drives:

4 out of 5 eggsalright..

Pros: a solid replacement for a dying laptop hard drive. the SSD caching helps speed up some applications and boot times. nothing out of this world though.

Cons: not as fast as i would've thought. the jump between 5400 and 7200 rpm really makes a difference

Other Thoughts: i used this review to repair a coworker's laptop hard drive. this review was based off of his feedback

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Patrick,

We wanted to note that it may take up to a half dozen reboots to notice the full performance increase as the most accessed data is put on the high-performing SSD portion of the drive.

2 out of 5 eggsNCQ 5400 RPM 4KALIGNED S.M.A.R.T.

Pros: SOMEWHAT faster overall, 3 year warranty, and speedy w/small files, 64 MB cache.

Cons: NOT consistently faster, 3 year warranty, and only 5,400 rpm. Oh, yeah .. and, it's a Seagate drive.

Other Thoughts: The title explains the inconsistency of this drive, and why nobody mentions the actual speed ... in fact? Seagate fails to disclose this anywhere I've looked, and I even downloaded the spec sheet directly from them (honestly, folks, who does that? )-;~

This drive only seems to stand out when small files are involved (random 4K read/write benchmark tests), which does give many programs in Window a considerable boost, but ... claiming this thing "performs like a SSD" is like saying our Civic runs like a Ferrari <-- both use gas, and go down the road.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Daniel,

We wanted to provide more detail on why RPMs are not advertised on our laptop hybrid drives. Please reference the following support article here:

3 out of 5 eggsGood but Risky

Pros: Works okay, pretty fast, and runs when I need it to

Cons: Let's see this sshd is not worth the price I think right out of the box it's been loud and had this weird clicking noise that's the loudest thing in my computer. Also I've been having desktop lag sessions without even having internet, and after reading other reviews I'm wondering if I should back up my hard drive before it crashes on me. So probably not worth the risk to get it.

Other Thoughts: It's a good drive just don't know if it's worth the risk since it's somewhat pricey and it might not last much longer.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Andrew,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your Laptop Solid State Hybrid drive. This drive should not be excessively noisy or making unusual clicking noises.
