The Business Storage 4-bay NAS includes government-grade hardware encryption technology that helps protect data stored on the NAS. When you access files remotely, the 4-bay NAS also helps protect your data-in-flight with SSL/TLS, the same technology that secures your information when banking online.

The 4-bay NAS features a Universal Storage Module (USM) slot that makes it incredibly simple and cost-effective to create off-site backups of your data. Start by docking a Seagate Backup Plus portable drive in the USM slot. With a touch of a button, you can transfer large files at speeds up to 3x faster than USB 2.0. Undock your portable drive and data, and you're ready to take your files with you or to a secure, off-site location.

The USM slot is also convenient for photographers, videographers and other professionals who routinely bring back large files from the field. Use a Backup Plus portable drive throughout the day and when you're back at the office, slide the portable drive into the USM slot and-with a touch of a button-all of your work is transferred to a designated folder on the 4-bay NAS

3 out of 5 eggsTricky Installation

This review is from: Seagate STBP4000100 4TB Network Storage

Pros: Huge storage.

Cons: Installation did not go well. I had to contact manufacturer because manual was hidden on their site. Once I did, I found the support to be pretty good.

Other Thoughts: This would be a great addition to a small office if (1) it installed easily and (2) had an easy-to-find manual. This product struck out twice.

I was pleased with the small size and design of this unit. It is lightweight and sturdy. I was also pleased to see that I apparently only had to hook it to my ethernet and a power source, and then type something into the browser. After that, according to the start-up guide, I'd be ready to go.

Nope. The installation failed. So I went to the Seagate site and ended up hopelessly lost there. After a significant amount of frustration, I took a break.

Upon returning, I registered the product and was able to get my network to recognize the device. However, I needed instructions on how to set it up. Still unable to find the manual, I finally had to contact Seagate.

Here is the link to the manual (because you will need it):

Unless you already have experience setting up this kind of device to your network, you might want to look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 eggsgreat when it was working

This review is from: Seagate STBP4000100 4TB Network Storage

Pros: can access the NAS from your cellphone

Cons: global access would fail constantly. I bought this for the specific reason of accessing my files from anywhere. once a month I would get a message cannot connect. I would have to reboot the NAS everytime. after 1 year I couldn't access the server from inside the office. turns out for no reason the RAID array went bad and I lost my data. I looked online and found out this happens often. firmware upgrade did not work to recover RAID. when I called Seagate they couldn't figure out the problem and tried to charge me $3000.00+ to recover the data that their faulty product lost.

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate STBP4000100 4TB Network Storage

Pros: easy setup

Cons: read/write speed not as advertised. Seagate claimed 100Mb/s, critic benchmarks were around 33Mb/s for RAID 5, my system was getting 4-14Mb/s... unusable for my needs.

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased

This review is from: Seagate STBP4000100 4TB Network Storage

Pros: Easy to setup
Easy to upgrade Firmware

Cons: Price
Must upgrade firmware before doing anything!

Other Thoughts: The reviews really made me think long and hard over this purchase. But I have had a great experience with this unit. Up to now I was a Buffalo NAS guy, but have had too many far ranging issues with their products and support to just buy another unit to replace my failing 2bay Buffalo unit. I wanted to try another brand and am happy with the Seagate unit. Based on other reviews, right out of the box I upgraded firmware and had had zero issues. It is of course faster than my old unit, but that was to be expected
