2 out of 5 eggsLot's of Storage, Same Speed

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: 4TB of Storage is nice. I am using this as a Back-Up Drive to a (2) 1TB RAID-0 array and supplemental storage if needed. That is about all the good I can say, see Cons

Cons: When testing with Parkdale I saw no speed increase over a standard 7200RPM 64MB Cache HDD.

When I bought the drive it was on sale for $169.99. I thought for the extra $30 (over a standard 4TB HDD) it was worth it. However, at regular price of ~$250 it is not worth it!

Parkdale will test a standard 7200RPM 64MB Cache drive at ~141Mbps Read and ~150Mbps for Write. This drive tested at ~170Mpbs for Read and ~169Mbps for Write. While there was some improvement that marginal amount is not worth the cost difference.

Other Thoughts: You could buy (2) Standard 3TB drives for the cost of one of these and have more storage capacity.

3 out of 5 eggsnice size

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: I love the size, this one drive replaced 2 1tb drives

Cons: the problem that I have is it is not as fast as my old hard drive that it replaced. With this drive claiming that the SSD part would make it faster, I was not impressed

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Mario,

We wanted to note that it may take a number of reboots to notice the full performance benefit of the Desktop Solid State Hybrid drive. The reboots are necessary to allow the adaptive memory feature to determine what data is accessed the most and to put this data on the quick access solid state portion of the drive.

3 out of 5 eggsBuyer BEWARE!!

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Lots of space, hybrid drive, reliable company.

Cons: I have a AM3+ FX processor and 970 Extreme R.20 board with UEFI and I cannot install windows 7 64-bit on it. This is due to the MBR limitation of 2+ TB. Even if using two partitions, if GPT is used, Windows doesn't like it. Do your research, make sure your hardware can support UEFI and GPT. Alternatively, buy the 1TB or 2TB version of this drive and you'll experience no issues.

Other Thoughts: I'm disappointed Seagate didn't make drivers for this SSHD. Giving it three stars because Seagate is selling products that aren't fully supported.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Huge. Works.

Cons: None at this moment

Other Thoughts: Had to buy an add-on sata card to get all 4Tb. Nforce chipset only sees 2 Tb. Probably because of this 1X PCIe card, I can't say that the drive amazed me with speed. Not like it is that important for me, but still. Probably I should've settled for a regular HD.

Pros: none

Cons: Is pure you know what. the Hybridd thing two drives tighter that don't work together
I has to buy a raid card so you can do a raid set up betwing this two drives but still can't access the other part of the drive not nice

2 out of 5 eggsOriginal unit needed RMA

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: None originally, second unit worked flawlessly, good throughput's for a hybrid drive. Very tempted to put two in raid0

Cons: First unit was DOA, spindle would not turn even after power was on, troubleshot all connection possibilities before RMAing the unit.

Other Thoughts: Turnaround for the RMA from newegg was very painless. Very impressed with their process.

1 out of 5 eggsNever Made it

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: I would have really liked to have reviewed this item, unfortunately it never arrived getting lost in the system..

Cons: can't give you any because I never got the drive

Other Thoughts: if you have some other thoughts, however I doubt you will print this because it really paints them in a bad light.. Their customer service on this item was lousy, I had to make several phone calls just to get them to finally admit that it was lost in the system they made me wait the entire ship time when they could've just as easily ship me a new one admitted overnight.. However they didn't do that. This is really lowered my faith in new egg and will have to just see how things go in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid and fast

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: fast, and quiet.

Cons: non so far

Other Thoughts: Have had this installed as a replacement for my 2tb drive in my imac. Have been running this drive for about 5 months now with no issues. The drive is without a question faster than the stock drive that came with the imac due to the onboard 8gb ssd. There are no heat issues or sound issues as compared with the stock drive.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Drive with Solid State Speed

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Faster than an unladen swallow when reading commonly accessed data. With 8GB of SSD cache, that's a lot of software & documents that will load rapidly.

Cons: If your chipset drivers aren't up to date, you can experience data loss in Windows 8.1 when shutting down. My assumption is the OS isn't properly flushing the cache resulting in a loss of whatever is in the 64MB of volatile cache.

If you don't reboot often, your boot & login software might not be in the SSD cache, resulting in slower boot times.

Other Thoughts: I was having the caching issue which Seagate phone support was able to quickly assess and suggest a resolution. Their advice (installing new chipset drivers) was excellent.
