2 out of 5 eggsThat noise

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Boot time seems noticeably faster, good price.

Cons: Besides the fact that you have to specially partition this on windows to have it recognize it as 4tb and not 2tb, the noise that the hard drive makes is VERY annoying. Started up after a day or so of usage, I know most drives make ticking noises as the spindle moves, but this drive is extra noticeable and irritating. If something else in your build is making noise to cover it up, aka fans whatnot then it might not be a problem but my case has 4 fans total and on max speed the ticking noise is still very annoying.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Tylor R.,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your Desktop Solid State Hybrid drive.

It is not typical or expected for this drive to be excessively noisy. Please check the drive health by running our Seatools diagnostics listed below:

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

If the drive passes Seatools, please check the power supply to the drive and also verify that the drive is mounted properly within the Desktop computer.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact our support staff and we will be happy to assist further:

2 out of 5 eggsI give up!

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: It is very fast as a boot drive with plenty of storage.

Cons: NOT RELIABLE. This was a replacement RMA drive for one that failed hard during a data transfer from a 1.5TB drive it was replacing. The new replacement drive was working great for one day after the transfer and 8.1 fresh install on a B75 MOBO. Then for no reason it stopped booting, the data was there and usable if I wanted it as a second drive. I reloaded 8.1 using a different MOBO/chipset (Z77) believing it to be a compatibility issue. Unfortunately history repeated itself…this drive is defective! I will be returning it for a refund.

Other Thoughts: I find it hard to believe I got two defective drives in a row. This is a first.
Rather than upgrading to a single 4TB drive I decided to do a two drive solution; a 240GB SSD and a Seagate 3TB. So far so good but I do have a uneasiness about the 3TB because it’s a Seagate. Too bad because up to now I always had a good experience with Seagates.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Plenty of speed and storage. Had no problem getting the full 4TB recognized. Windows 8.1 w/Update 1 loaded without a hitch.

Cons: Again, Installed windows 8.1, worked like a champ. Started copying data from 1.5 TB WD RE drive it was replacing. (It had reached capacity after 2.5+ trouble free years.) After about 95% done and the 4TB failed,,,, hard! Very discouraging.

Other Thoughts: New egg is replacing the drive. Hopefully my experience is an exception and the replacement drive can give years of trouble free operation that I have experience with the 2.5" SSHDs in other application.

2 out of 5 eggshumvee drive

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Fast
High Capacity
Low power

Cons: Drive motor below expectation, emits a sound between a hum and a vee noise

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a fast, high capacity, low cost and cool to the touch drive, this is the drive you want. Unfortunately, I got a humvee drive where the motor emits a constant low level noise between the sound of a hum and a vee, so I am calling this a humvee drive!! I can't stand the humvee noise after a few minutes of being 5 feet away from the enclosed and internally sound padded desktop case.

I don't know how seagate can claim their drives are quiet, when every single 3TB and 4TB drives I have emits low level white noise from the motor, becomes a roar in a raid set of 5 drives each.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Kwokken,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your Desktop Solid State Hybrid drive.

We would like to note that for RAID systems for 1-5 drives, we would recommend the following drives for best performance:

Regarding your Desktop Hybrid drives, if the drive is making unusual noises, please try our drive diagnostics to check the drive health (on a non-RAID Desktop system):

5 out of 5 eggsSize and Speed - awesome

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Very fast reads due to 8GB SSD hybrid. I installed this on my old iMac Mid 2007 and everything is considerably faster. Boot times went from 1:43 to 0:33 on a fresh install of Mavericks. Writes are still about the same as any hard drive, but on par with other current generation hard drives.

One improvement that surprised me was that Minecraft is notably more consistent in frame rate with the new drive. I'm guessing that textures can load more quickly with the SSD Cache. My frame rates previously would vary between 60fps and 6fps, averaging about 39fps or so. Now, my average is closer to 45, but it has not been below 30fps.

Cons: None So Far.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these, one to serve as a backup drive (and later to be allocated to a new PC). The only issue is that my external drive enclosure only supports 3TB, not 4TB. Purely my fault for not researching, but for some this could be a con to purchasing this size drive. If you plan to use this drive (or any other 4TB drive, make sure you verify your enclosure supports 4tb+). Most as of this writing have a 3TB cap.

The more you know....

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Works - that is always good for a hard drive. Packing was pretty good but I am sure the delivery company can overcome any packing. Haven't exhaustively tested it yet but HD Tune Pro reports 3 to 4 times as fast as 4 TB drive depending on transfer size and it maintained transfer rates of over 150 MB/sec for all transfer sizes over 1 MB.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I got this to complement my SSD system drive. I moved all the program data files and MyDocuments to this drive plus all the normal data files I use. Most file it would read in normal use are within the limit of the flash memory so I should see some improvement over a normal HD.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressed

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Faster than expected.

Cons: Costs money, occupies space, isn't as fast as RAM.

Other Thoughts: This SSHD hybrid was not much more expensive than an pure HD so I opted to try it.

Installed in my 2006 vintage MacPro 1,1 with slower SATA than this drive is capable of. Moved 1.9TB of my archives from another drive and the rate was limited by what the other would move. Then I launched md5 on all the copied files and was delighted to see the sustained read data rate between 155 and 200 megabytes/sec, favoring the high end of that range. First evening of use, I'm pretty happy.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat HTPC drive

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: capacity
faster than a standard HDD

Cons: file transfers don't benefit from the SSHD technology
boot times not as fast as the SSD this replaced

Other Thoughts: The mini-ITX case I installed this in only has 1x3.5" internal bay so this hybrid drive is a nice compromise. The setup this replaced was a 64GB SSD boot drive and a 750GB laptop drive. I had these drives in a 3.5"->2x2.5" adapter. Prior to this hybrid drive, my boot time was 11 seconds and I averaged just under 100MB/s transfers. With this drive my PC boots in 14 seconds and I average almost 130MB/s transfers. I rarely have to boot my HTPC since it's left on so in my case the 30% slower boot time is worth the 30% increase in transfer speeds. I love the capacity of this drive and how it's SSHD technology works, while the boot time with my SSD/HDD duo was a little faster I don't miss that setup at all. The capacity of this drive is amazing and the speed is great. I did compare this drive to a SSD in the "cons" but while it shares some of the same technology it isn't advertised as a SSD so it's an unfair comparison. If you're in a situation like me where your case only has 1 bay for an internal drive, or you're just looking to have a minimal footprint inside your case you should definitely look at this drive.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid HDD - Not an SSD replacement

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001 4TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: I really wish Seagate would market this drive differently so as to avoid any negative backlash on it's performance. There is no question that this drive is certainly solid and decently fast for a mechanical drive. That being said, you will not get anywhere near SSD performance out of it.

The attached 8GB of flash storage acts as a larger on board cache. You cannot directly install or transfer files to it, it simply finds what files you access the most and keeps them for later, albeit faster, access. I'll leave the technical benchmark numbers to the other reviewers as there is no sense in cluttering the page up with duplicate results, but if you take a look you will see that it does perform on par with other mechanical drives of its size.

I noticed that it seemed to perform much better with smaller files and there were diminishing returns with the bigger the files. This of course meant countless opening and closing of the same files over and over with a stop watch to see if the speed increase was real or simply perceived.

Cons: I'm a little disappointed that they market this drive for speed, but the platters only spin up to 5900 RPM. The standard for "fast" mechanical drives is and has been 7200 RPM for a long time now. They get a little bit faster but are usually reserved for enthusiasts or enterprise solutions. There was a considerable difference in speed when I transferred a 20GB 1080P video from my main SSD to this drive, and then pitting it against my other 2TB 7200 RPM drive. Because this was a large file and a one time transfer, the 8GB of flash storage doesn't come into play at all and it relies totally on the platter speed to which this unit has a disadvantage.

I think Seagate is doing themselves a disservice by only attaching 8GB of flash storage, especially considering the cost has of NAND memory has never been lower (not counting natural disasters). Setting a minimum of 16 GB would allow plenty of room for the OS to boot quickly, as well as room for resource intensive apps (Adobe creative suite, anyone?) to load in a snap. Making it 7200 RPM and just tacking on a few bucks to the price tag would be icing on the cake and an ideal compromise in my opinion.

Other Thoughts: So, who is this drive really geared towards? If you find yourself using the same programs or files over the course of a work day then you could potentially find benefit with this unit. You'll see your OS boot a little bit faster, your favorite maps in a video game may also see an increase, but is it worth the premium? If you are in the market for a large capacity drive for daily use, then yes I think it is. I would not recommend this drive for storage such as a NAS or streaming device, you would be throwing money down the well in that scenario.

If you are looking for the best possible boot and application launch times and you don't have an immediate need for Terabytes of storage then save your money and get a real SSD, you'll be much happier you did.

*Tech note - Ensure your motherboard and OS support hard drives 2TB in size and over. Most modern hardware shouldn't have an issue, but it's better to double check before spending your hard earned cash*

**Full disclosure, I was offered this drive for reviewing purposes**
