1 out of 5 eggsUnstable and Slow

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: I can't see any. It writes at about 60MB, which is slower than some 2.5" drives I have from other vendors, and it's boot times for Win 8.1 are slower than a standard 7200 RPM older Seagate.

Cons: It writes at about 60MB, which is slower than some 2.5" drives I have from other vendors, and it's boot times for Win 8.1 are slower than a standard 7200 RPM older Seagate.
And finally, it's ungodly unstable. I regularly have to do restores because of boot failures.
Slow, Unreliable, what could be worse?

Other Thoughts: Either I have a bad drive OR these drives desperately need a firmware update.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Meagan,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your 2TB Hybrid Desktop drive.

Please try our SeaTools drive diagnostics listed below, as this will determine the drive health and it will also check for any firmware updates:

4 out of 5 eggsgreat HD

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: 2tb for a great price. easy to install. worked right out of the box

Cons: doesn't seem any faster then my 7200rpm 1tb hd. windows score didn't improve after 3 weeks of regular usage. Rig boots and programs load just as fast as before.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too shabby

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Drive performed well during ownership. Boot times were very quick. Drive was quiet and didn't bother me during use.

Cons: After about a year and a half, had my first disk drive failure. Pulled the driver out and let it cool off and it was back to working in no time. Whether this is because the drive overheated or because it's just on its last legs, this does seem to be a significant issue. I do live in a tropical climate and it did fail during a time of the year when it is the hottest so those who may have similar living conditions may want to be aware of possible overheating problems.

Other Thoughts: Reasonably priced drive that serves as a cheaper solution than having an SSD and HDD running alongside each other. I have had no real complaints regarding performance and will be purchasing a second one to replace the old.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Reese,

We would advise checking the drive health using our SeaTools diagnostic utility. This will check the drive thoroughly and diagnose any possible overheating conditions that may have occurred in the past.

1 out of 5 eggsUtter Garbage

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Replacement for backup external USB drive.

Cons: I have had this drive almost 6 months now and already it is failing.
Do yourselves a favorite and find another drive to buy. I wish I had listened to the other reviews about this product so I didn't waste my time and money on it.

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your time buying this SSHD it's a massive and utter failure/disappointment. If I could give it negative eggs I would but it's not allowed.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGood service and drives

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: High storage and speed for a good price. I have purchased many of these drives for several different computers I've built. In my previous review had had some problems with some, however their support and customer service was very good about dealing with our problems and we were able to get drives working.
I have one currently in my computer and two in other computers which have been functioning without issue for over a year. Definitely would recommend for the price (when it's about $100).

Cons: If you have any power issues, these drives will die, which is one of the issues I was having. A solid state drive functioned with the same power as I was trying to use with this drive, but the Seagate drive failed.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Recommended

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Fast boot times.

Cons: Doesn't live very long. Only lasted a little over 1 year of 4-6hrs a day of use.
Difficult to recover files.

Other Thoughts: Bought this thinking that perhaps it would last me a while and be a fairly decent drive... It was very disappointing when toward the beginning of this year my computer locked up when opening larger files/programs... Several tests later and the hard drive completely failed. Had to recover what I could using an external linux boot and even then the drive has so many bad sectors I lost a lot of data. Going to contact manufacture to see recommendations. I used to like Seagate as a whole... but....

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Works great, no issue's at all, speed seems to be good for my online games and others.

Cons: NewEgg uses Canada Post to deliver to Canada, they delivered my item to someone else, it was signed for by someone else and then 10 days later finally got the package. Canada Post kept saying it was delivered barring the fact not to me, but eventuall it did arrive. Please NewEgg allow another method of delivery UPS would be much better. This caused me to do a refund, then to call and have my Credit Card charged again after I did finally get the item. Huge pain, paying for it locally would have bee less painful. Will likely not buy in future because of this.

Other Thoughts: Overall product is great, getting the product on the other hand was a clamity of misdirection to the extreme. Costing me money as I bought a replacement product locally only to then get the item and then pay for it again because refund had been done. NewEgg allow UPS delivery Please...

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate SSHD Lie

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: None (If I could give it zero eggs, I would).

Cons: Lower performance than 7200 SATA at higher cost.

Other Thoughts: I have never seen such a cynical bait-and-switch conspiracy and operation as that concocted by Seagate and Ubisoft. The “come on” was that SSHD was the best compromise between SSD and HD in speed at a cost closer to HD than SSD. As a “Seagate Gift” I was supposed to get 2 copies of / licenses for Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed Trilogy” (i.e. AC - China, - India, and - Russia). Seagate made it sound like their SSHDs would make gaming mind-blowingly fast from your local HD, and that these games would demonstrate that fact.
UNTRUE:
First, SSHD shows no performance improvement, rather a performance decrease! Even with the system at idle – no user applications open - the SSHD is constantly being accessed by over 40 system functions at a constant 10 megabit / second IO rate while the standard HDs I have show zero I/O. The SSHD appears to require non-stop operating system attention. The “under 10 second” boot of Windows 8.1 is a blatant lie. With the 500 GB Seagate 7200 RPM HD, boot time for my Windows 8.1 workstation from power on until I could access an application from the desktop without the ‘eternal vortex’ next to the mouse pointer, would be roughly 3:30 mins by the stop watch. With a 2 GB Seagate SSHD, it is closer to 3:45 mins, and the HD light never goes out, access never ceases.
As for the “Seagate Gift” games – they are not HD-resident games: they are online games, so how is that supposed to be affected by your HD? Further, the “bundle” is supposed to include three games, but you only get access to one, “Assassin’s Creed – China”. And of the two “product keys” I got (one for each SSHD three-game “gift”), only one was valid!
Application performance (looking at intensive media access applications like Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Avid Media Composer….) also shows no noticeable increase in performance. Neither do existing flight simulator games I have on my system.
Could all this be “stupid user” problems? Perhaps. But I do hold a master’s degree in computer science, and have been active in the field (primarily in real-time aerospace applications) since the mid-1970s, so I am not completely in the dark with respect to hardware operation and monitoring of hardware-software-firmware interaction. Based on information I can cull from various system performance and monitoring tools, SSHD (at least Seagate’s implementation) is bogus technology. I.e., it makes for wonderful “marketdroid” speeches and promos, but scientifically, factually, it appears to, at best, be no different than quality 7200 RPM SATA drive with 64 – 128 MB of and more probably is slightly lower performance in the final analysis.
So, if you are lusting for the performance of SSD, but can’t yet justify the cost, DON’T FALL FOR THE SSHD PERFORMANCE PITCH –IT’S A COMPLETE LIE!! Use the extra money to buy a larger capacity / cache standard 7200 rpm SATA drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Wayne,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your 2TB Desktop SSHD. If this is new installation of the drive, try rebooting a number of times to see if this increases the performance of the drive.

Otherwise, we would like to talk with you by phone to determine the root cause and available resolution to the performance problems mentioned in your review. 4 out of 5 eggsSeems Decent

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: 2TB at a fair cost.
after only a few days it's prioritized some files and is running much faster than my original drive.

Cons: it whistles; I hear this drive running when the computers on and it's annoying. it's not loud, but louder than anything else in my rig.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Michael,

It would be unusual for this drive to make whistling noises. Please test the drive using SeaTools to check the drive health:

http://goo.gl/R9KKh4

Also, please verify that the drive is mounted correctly in your Desktop system.
