Pros: Its works

Cons: Not so fast, just a standard mechanical drive

Other Thoughts: Just buy a WD Black or SSD
Hybrids with a STD drive is just hohum performance
for this thing to be worth it a high speed drive should have been used

2 out of 5 eggsunreliable.

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Drive is quite fast when it works. Good price.

Cons: When the drive is under heavy workloads it seems to give windows driver errors (and these errors give kernel level errors on linux (debian)) it disconnects from the machine.. see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: Tyler P. said it, he said everything I can say. I have tested this for a few weeks now, it seems the easiest way to reproduce the error is run heavy encryption with 7zip on a few files from SSD and put the new generated file onto this SSHD.. assuming your processor can archive faster than the drive, the drive is going to disconnect and poof everything explodes. This is not an error you can reproduce on anything other than these SSHDs it seems (luckily from company laptops & desktops I have access to all of them)

They're great drives, if you're not doing crazy performance tasks.. so I would suggest laptops etc using these, but not gaming desktops. I'm eyeing that 1TB samsung SSD now, that price drop.. mmmm

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Drive is fast, quiet, seems to run cool

Cons: Drive has performance limits. Cache is too small to make a huge difference. Drive has been unreliable, and Seagate unwilling to replace it without an error code from SeaTools.

Other Thoughts: The drive is good, and a good value when it works. Whenever I do heavy data transfers when the drive is cold (has been running for under 20 minutes) my system will crash (BSOD). The system restarts and can't find the hard drive. If I power all the way down, then restart, the system finds the drive and acts normal as long as I keep the system on. Seagate really doesn't want to help you with warranty unless they have an error code from Seatools. Unfortunately for me, I think it is a problem with the flash, which Seatools cannot test. Seems like a flaw in their ability to diagnose a failing drive. Not satisfied with their customer service so far.

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Dead on arrival.

Cons: Wasted my time trying to get this thing to work.

Other Thoughts: Hard drive manufacturers have really slipped on the reliability of hard drives. This drive was packed well but was non-functional when I installed it. I expect this is standard user experience now.

Cons: None Not one.

Other Thoughts: Well it's real fast now she was running Vista. Yeah and I put second drive in too. Same because she is a Hoarder. lol

5 out of 5 eggsFaster than a 7200RPM drive

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Faster than a 7200RPM driver without the hassle of dealing with a small SSD drive. Drive runs reasonably cool and quiet.

Cons: not as fast as an SSD, but that was a given going it. Not a real issue.

Other Thoughts: For building a system, this is a real nice compromise between more speed and the ease of not having to deal with a small SSD drive.

8 GB MLC NAND Speed: 190 MB/s (According to Seagate)
Very quiet, never made a sound while in use. The only time I ever heard it was when it went into its standby phase and I could hear it spin down as it was shutting off.

I also tested the new drive on a SATA II connection and as I figured the results were within a margin of error as some values were higher and some were lower than when on the SATA III connection. So if you don’t have a SATA III capable motherboard, don’t worry about it.

Cons: The 8 GB NAND as many have said is too small as the operating system (If running Windows) is roughly 24 GB for my system for example. Granted there is stuff within that 24 GB that is not necessary to have accelerated on the NAND such as system restore files for example but at 8 GB it’s mostly just going to cache the OS. If they made it around 16 GB it would be better as this would be big enough for all of the important OS files and still have some room for your programs like Photoshop for instance. At its current size I get the impression that it is constantly trading files for who is important because the NAND is always full.

Also if the NAND was faster it would make this an even more compelling deal (Rated speed of 190 MB/s). For example I feel it would be better if it could at least saturate SATA II so around 260-280 MB/s.

Other Thoughts: Overall this drive is great if you either don’t have the budget for an SSD or just need a lot of storage space. By having the NAND flash onboard it really helps speed things up like booting which is not as fast as and SSD but is way faster than any hard drive I’ve ever tested. This acceleration was also seen with the opening of programs such as Photoshop which opened very quickly. With this drive you have to remember that it needs a couple tries on certain things for it to start to cache it to the NAND, so don’t think it doesn’t work because it isn’t fast on the first try.

Not related to the drive but Newegg’s new hard drive packaging is fantastic as the drive is held together so tightly I could barely get it out of the box.

*All tests were conducted three times to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results.

5 out of 5 eggsBreath of fresh air for aging computer

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Great drive, I am really happy with it. Bought on Cyber Monday and installed this as the system drive for my aging HTPC. It's a Core 2 Quad Q6600, with only 2GB ram. It's probably like 5 years old. With it being a HTPC really the only apps we use is Windows Media Center for TV and XBMC for network video streaming from file server. With only 2GB RAM the hybrid nature of the drive provides a nice boost in pagefile access and loading our most common apps.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: No reliability problems when first received, or since. When price is right I will pick up another.
