1 out of 5 eggsComplete junk

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Can't think of any other than it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Cons: Slow, unreliable, now I'd had to disassemble my computer and send it back to Seagate and wait for a replacement. Of course, I'll have zero confidence in the replacement.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for a HTPC build, seemed like an interesting option for storage. When trying to install the OS, the first clue that a problem was imminent that it was PAINFULLY slow. Took far too long to install the OS. Once it was installed, the brand new (every component) system was a complete dog. Click, wait.....wait.....wait..... Here I am a couple of months later, and its dead. System doesn't recognize the drive. Put it in another computer, instant instability and unhappiness in the other system.

Would not recommend or buy again. Sadly, I didn't figure out what the problem was until AFTER the 30 day return period, so now I'll be stuck with a replacement of the same junk. Wish I had bought something else.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Steven,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your Desktop Solid State Hybrid Drive. Certainly it is not typical or expected for these drives to behave this way.

Please let us know if you experience the same problems with the replacement drive. We will be happy to talk with you by phone to determine the root cause and available resolution. A case (04862001) has been created in our records based on your name that shows your review and our response. If from the US or Canada, our contact number for support is 800-732-4283. 5 out of 5 eggsSeagate Rocks

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Quite and fast
Loads windows (vanilla) 11 secs , mine lots of softwarer 22 sec flat.
No different to install than Sata drives as before. (easy)

Cons: None, I have been running for over a week and this drive preforms great

Other Thoughts: Until the price (and size ) of SSD M.2`s go down, this drive is a real step up from the noise , heat and clattering of conventional drives.
I have been using Seagate drives for years and have only worn out one of them. Never had a equiptment failure yet. I feel that Seagate has one of the best drives out.
If your going to use AHCI , be sure to have your drivers ready on disk or flash drive to load when you start windows install.
I also used windows settings and file transfer to put all my data back on the new installed windows. Took a little time to save the files, but it really did work good.
For some reason my Windows image file from backing up windows would not read from my hard drive during install. I just re-installed windows 7 64 bit and then used the files and settings. Everything was there.

5 out of 5 eggsUsing for 2+ years - Great Quality & Value

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Excellent speed, these drives are typically 3x faster in 'real life application' to that of a "traditional" 7200 rpm HDD.
After trying several 'pure' SSDs (different brands) over the years and having many of them fail numerous times; I will no longer use a SSD as the sole hard drive for a system. But of the 30+ drives purchased and put into customer and my own systems over a 2 year period of time; I have NOT HAD A SINGLE FAILURE YET!
I am completely sold on the dependability, speed, and value of these drives.
Do yourself a favor and upgrade/build your system with a SSHD.

Cons: The only problem I have ever encountered, is not really a con but a design complication created by PC manufacturers:
These drives are on many occasions thinner (they are standard width and length, just shorter in height) than older style drives; so if the computer manufacturer designed their PC for a thicker drive, it can cause a complication of padding the thinner drive to fit in the larger space. Again, this is the PC manufacturer's design flaw, and not Seagate's for making larger capacity drives that are thinner and lighter.

Other Thoughts: I own an I.T. company and we have been using the solid state hybrid technology drives since they were first created and marketed by Seagate in early 2013 and so far, they are still the best in the market.

2 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Got 3 months of solid performance

Cons: It only lasted 3 months

Other Thoughts: One of these came in a Lenovo K450e desktop I got back in January. Thankfully I ordered an additional SSHD to put it in RAID1. The factory drive failed yesterday, and the second drive I added is now synching up to a Toshiba 2TB while I've got another one on order.

2 out of 5 eggsNot fast on start

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Affordable hasn't completely quit yet only had it a few months

Cons: Does not start up fast last start up it took forever to even boot into Windows ell my equipment is new so I know it isn't that. It has been giving me problems since I got it not acting the way it should for a SSHD more like an old 5400RPM that's going out which is what I replaced this one for.

Other Thoughts: None just disappointment

2 out of 5 eggsCan't even make it to warranty end

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: The hard drive worked well, while it did.
It also gave enough notice of failure that I should have taken notice of. There was a regular clicking for a period of time which I had (obviously mistakenly) assumed was a fan tapping a cord or a bearing in case fan.

Cons: The hard drive failed after 2-odd years.

The major problem here being, since it was my newest drive, I'd delegated it to backup duty.

Unfortunately this has led to a loss of backups as well as other storage the drive had been used for.

I am sending it for repair, but my other drives which are 5+ years old have all been rock solid. It is highly unfortunate that this one failed so soon. I've never had a HDD fail so early on me before.

Of course failures happen, but with the density of drives now it leads to large amounts of data potentially being lost.

Other Thoughts: Would not buy again, I'd think if the HDD fails under warranty Seagate would offer some sort of data recovery price reduction but it doesn't seem that they do.

Ultimately it is my fault as my assumption even was that if a hdd failed I had the backups - I had not really considered the most recent one was the one likely to fail. Oh well. I have sent it to a data recovery provider and if it is recoverable for a realistic price I am willing to pay it.

It is no longer readable normally so I could do no recovery myself and I expect at least a modestly high bill if recovery is possible.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent compromise

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: The overall installation was a snap. The SSD end of things required nothing special. It works as advertised. It learns quickly what needs to be stored on the SSD for quick recovery of files. Until SSD's lower a lot in price this seems to be the way to go. I have already recommended this drive to others.

Cons: Unsure of it's long term viability at this time but can find no other short comings.

2 out of 5 eggsReturned mine

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Good capacity
Reasonably fast, but not as good as non-hybrid Seagate Barracuda 1TB I already had.

Cons: Weird performance issue. I had increasing frequency of drive timeouts where it would take literally 2+ minutes to access the drive. First it was every few days, then daily, then multiple times per day. I had one automatic CHKDSK that suddenly recovered 10,000+ lost files (all as file0001.chk, etc.). Thankfully had a backup.

Other Thoughts: I don't know for sure if the drive was bad because it passed diagnostics. Perhaps some incompatibility with my Samsung 850 EVO boot drive? Dell motherboard? In any event, I put in a WD which has been running for a few weeks and seems fine.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: since this was my 1st build i wanted to keep it simple as possible and I shy'd away from using 2 drives, (ssd/hard drive). i gotta say i'm impressed with this hybrid drive.. i definitely notice big difference in load times compared to the standard HD i had in my previous pc.. although, there is a learning curve for the hybrid to "learn" what you use often.. after around 10-12 reboots, things really speed up.. is it as good as a ssd combo? no not quite,.. but i'm very happy with it

Cons: none so far
