5 out of 5 eggsSSD Alternative

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: A hybrid of an SSD and HDD that offers the best of both worlds: SPACE AND SPEED. Yes the first few boot ups are "slow" but after the tenth you'll notice the boot-up time difference.

The hybrid also makes cache's of commonly used programs, so the start-up time for those programs are significantly faster. Think of cache like memories and the hybrid is the brain.

HDD SPACE?!

Partition HDD with SSD cache?!

CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE TO AN SSD?!

Cons: Data transfer rate isn't AS fast as an SSD (I own both so I can tell, see, and feel the difference).

Overall, not as blazing fast as an SSD.

Other Thoughts: Yes hybrids are nowhere near as blazing fast as an SSD... BUT can you tell/feel the difference? Not really. They are still faster than snail-like HDD's.

I own both, with each computer using their own (one ssd the other ssd/hdd hybrid). I tested data transferring rate for both on a USB 3.0 socket, and the hybrid is slower. Like, a couple minutes slower for large files. Transfering files within the Hyrbid is also slower, whereas the SSD is... just fast.

Yet that's not to say the hybrid is slow. Compare both hybrid and ssd to an HDD, and yes the speed difference is significantly noticeable.

So a good alternative to an SSD is a hybrid because it offers HDD SPACE with SSD-like speed. Something traditional SSD's lack, unless you want to fork out extra hundreds of dollars for just a 500gb ssd when that 4tb HDD looks much spacier.

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: I am using this as a data drive only with an SSD for my programs drive. This is fast and is noticeable.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsGood SSHD

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Faster than a normal 7200 rpm hard drive when files are saved to SSD, my windows 8.1 boots up almost instantly. I have had no errors or any issues thus far, after reading the reviews I will update mine if the drive fails in the near future.

Cons: You can't put what you want on the SSD, its all automatic, so if you want certain files on there the only way to force the drive to save it is to open it over and over again.

Other Thoughts: Of course, this isn't a SSD, I can't believe people are complaining that it isn't as fast as an SSD......DUH!?

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Great price, super fast, and super fast shipping.

Cons: None as of right now.

Other Thoughts: 10/10 would buy again. Put it in my macpro, copied my old hard drive using carbon copy and made this my primary drive. erased my old 750gb and programed it for time machine.

5 out of 5 eggsAn elegant compromise

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Intelligent management firmware makes common apps you use often load much faster than a standard mechanical drive.
OS boots 2 to 3 times faster than a mechanical drive.

Cons: This unit is obviously not going to be as fast as a dedicated SSD.

Other Thoughts: A great compromise between a mechanical drive and an SSD. For folks who want a faster booting system while retaining the elegance and simplicity of a single drive, this might be the option for you.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good!

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: A lot cheaper than an SSD a quarter of the size.
Fast.
Quiet.

Installed this drive and the Windows 7 desktop shows its face in 40 seconds down from 1 minute 30! It's not SSD performance, but it's surprisingly not far off.

Cons: Could always be cheaper!

Seagate drive wizard for cloning won't run at first, it insists you do not have a SEAGATE drive. If this happens, switch from RAID or AHCI in your BIOS to IDE or COMPATIBLE. It will then pick up the drive controller and run.

Total image job was about 35 minutes for 110 gig. Nice!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD Couldnt Use It In A Custom Tower

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Great drive! Had no problems installing windows xp on it however....couldnt use it in my old custom built back in 2005 as it actually slowed down my windows boot as I was using it as a windows boot drive for my OS! Fixed this problem by putting it in my wife's compaq and she is now using it for her drive with no issues super fast and loads to windows 7 Professional in under 20 seconds straight to her desktop! Also very quiet and runs super cool!

Cons: none other then that I couldnt use it in my old custom tower!

Other Thoughts: Must be SATA gen. 2 controller on board my old tower can't run this drive at full speed due to imcompatability with the SSD inside! common incompatability with VIA VT8237R raid chipsets!

1 out of 5 eggsBought 2, +1yr -1 Drive

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: None.

Cons: Broke after one year

Other Thoughts: Well I thought I'd give Seagate another chance as these were new and not too costly at the time. Back to WD for me.
Can't say I noticed any difference in day-to-day use on a server with mostly random I/O vs WD Black.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: This review is an update, and includes further testing with various tools, including Spinrite 6, HD Tune Pro, and SeaTools. The drive continues to report a lot of seek errors and ECC Correctable errors, but apparently these are normal for Seagate drives, and do not indicate a likely premature failure, per a study by Google.

When I started testing the drive, I got some major dips in throughput rates at some areas of the drive, such as around 24GB, and around 50GB. As I have run numerous tests, which read and write to the drive extensively, it seems to have broken in the disc, and I'm no longer seeing many of those dips in performance.

On the bright side, when reading from the SSD part, throughput is excellent, at about 190MB/s. Also on the positive side, the underlying drive isn't bad, either, and has solid throughput throughout. The drive fares especially well on the Random Access 512 K tests.

Cons: Seek time tested at 14ms, not the <12 rated. Throughput averaged over 100Mb/s, but occasionally dipped to lows as low as 22.3 MBs. The drive occasionally failed, giving an I/O Error on HD Turne's File Benchmark. The drive reports large numbers in the Read Error Rate, Seek Error Rate, and Command Time Out rate, but I understand that those are normal.
