5 out of 5 eggsSSHD magic?

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: I would say hybrids are approx. 2x faster then traditional hard drives. You need to give it time to take full effect utilizing the 8GB SSD memory. Load times eventually increase in the games and apps you use the most. Boot up times eventually increase as well. Just understand it takes time for this to happen.

Cons: None really...

Other Thoughts: You can't beat the price per performance of hybrids! 1TB SSD would cost an the better part of two weeks pay for most people! On the other hand a 1TB SSHD is a days pay...

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic balance

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Much faster than a traditional hard drive but much cheaper than a pure SSD.

Cons: Not as fast as a pure SSD or as cheap as a traditional hard drive.

Other Thoughts: IMHO this drive strikes a great balance between the capacity and cost of a traditional drive and the speed of a SSD. I'm not a gamer, but I have noticed a speed increase in other I/O heavy activities (boot time, for example, is much lower).

I've been using this for about six months now without a hiccup. I know some people may worry about buying a Seagate drive; all I can say is that over the many years I've been buying hard drives I've had *much* better luck with Seagate than WD. I know that's not the norm (based on both Backblaze's statistics and anecdotal evidence), but it is what it is, and this drive has been no exception.

Unless you're a hardcore gamer one of these drives (whatever capacity matches your needs) is probably the right way to go these days.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not perform as advertised

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: NONE.

Cons: Ever since I began installing games to this Hard Drive, I've experienced random "texture pop-ins" and an increase in load times. You are better off purchasing a Western Digital Black. I'm not sure if it was damaged but the package was opened when I received it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Rembrandt,

To test the drive health, please try running our SeaTools diagnostics listed below:

http://goo.gl/R9KKh4

We wanted to note that it may take a number of reboots to notice the full performance benefit of the Desktop Solid State Hybrid drive. The reboots are necessary to allow the adaptive memory feature to determine what data is accessed the most and to put this data on the quick access solid state portion of the drive.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our support staff and we will be happy to assist further:

2 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Has great capacity, quicker than a tradition HDD.

Cons: I purchased this drive on 12/24/13. Started to show ominous signs within a year of purchase. See other thoughts for a more detailed explanation.

Other Thoughts: I bought this hybrid drive mainly for storage. At the 10 month mark is when it first started to act up. My computer wouldnt recongize it. I initially thought it was a bad sata cable, so I switched it out and much to my relief, it was back. This happened again 2 months later, I switched out the cables once again... showed back up again. Between the 12 month mark and 18 month mark, it would randomly just "lose connection". I would open up the case and pull the cable out and back in again. This process worked until 3 weeks ago. Much to my dismay I believe the drive is gone for good now. Lost all of my pictures and files.

I may have just gotten a bad drive. If you do decide to purchase one, you may want to purchase a warranty or have an additional external drive to back everything into. Very redundant... this is the first had drive of any kind that has every died on me. My sony 2 gb harddrive from 17 years ago still works till this day.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Syed,

We apologize for the problem with your 1TB Desktop Hybrid drive. Please try the drive on a different controller or on a different computer entirely to see if the drive is recognized. If you can get the drive recognized in the BIOS, try running our SeaTools diagnostics on the drive:

Should the drive not be recognized on any computer, please contact us directly using the link below, so we may check your warranty and return options.

5 out of 5 eggsJust works

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: 1 Tb storage; ease of installation; acelleration of pc.

Cons: None, so far.

Other Thoughts: I am used to unforeseen problems with new storage; it always ends up working, but I have to figure out how to get around microsoft. This drive was initialized, cloned, and ready to go in a few minutes, using the supplied software. I have no bench marks, but it seems that my computer is noticeably faster.

1 out of 5 eggsFail.

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: Install was a breeze, included software made a quick image type transfer to the new drive.

Disk marginally faster than the old one, but not as much as I'd hoped.

Cons: It's been just a little over a year and it's dead.

"The drive found 64 bad sectors during its self test.
There are 64 weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk.
223 errors occured during data transfer. This may indicate problem of the device or with data/power cables. Problems occurred between the communication of the disk and the host 104 times."

Only happened to notice this as the machine began freezing up. How much damage has been done to the data? No idea. Will need to restore from backup and start an RMA with Seagate for this disk.

So it's just a shade faster than a regular drive and it dies in just over a year? Yeah, sign me up for two... :-S

Other Thoughts: I hope the new one under return works better. Tell you what, it's not going anywhere near anything important datawise, that's for sure.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet and fast!

This review is from: Seagate Hybrid Drive ST1000DX001 1TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD

Pros: - Quiet boot up.
- Quicker than a normal hard drive.
- Great upgrade from a factory drive!
- Price is good for this little wonder.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Compared to my last hard drive this one is pretty fast! It's not as fast as my boyfriend's SSD, but it still loads up faster than a normal HD. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to upgrade their factory hard drive to something a bit faster, but not out of range of their computer hardware.
