5 out of 5 eggsYa 2tb

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 2tb of extra space to save stuff that I don't feel like tacking space on my SSD's.

Cons: Takes 5 hours to format it but after that your good to go

Other Thoughts: Well its 2tb of storage nothing special...

1 out of 5 eggsRead/Write Errors & Seek Errors

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Quite, and low power consumption.

Cons: SMART Data revealed increasing Read/Write Errors and Seek Errors on both drives purchased. Contacted manufacturer and inquired as to acceptable limits on Smart Data Fields 1, and 7 respectively. Was told the data was confidential, and that I should run Seatools to verify drive functionality before return. As the drives were installed in a Microsoft Storage Space (Mirror) the only way to test is to purchase (Another Spare Drive), to back up the mirror and then run seatools on the drive once safely removed.

My 30 day return with New Egg has expired so I can nolonger return the drives, and will now need to send both, back for repair to Seagate.

A very unproductive time to be had trying to determine actual reliability of the drives.

Also, ended up purchasing another drive as a spare, probably 3 years before I need one as a result.

Other Thoughts: Manufacturers should publish acceptable SMART read/write error rates, and seek error rates if any for their products.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive for LSI RAID controller

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Works perfectly with LSI hardware RAID controller (9361). Relatively cool. Fast enough for file storage. Packing is great (1" thick bubble envelope inside a box.

Controller on the drive is made by LSI, according to storage reviews.

I am buying more of these drives for raiding.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I had numerous problems with WD NAS drives dropping from LSI hardware array, even after passing diagnostic tests with flying colors. These Seagate drives appear to be compatible with LSI controllers. The only other alternative is buying Enterprise 7200rpm drives but I did not want additional noise and heat.

1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Not much for product

Newegg was great for resolving issue

Cons: Failed upon install, it was recognized by Windows 8.1 but said RAW. After two failed attempts at format, finally formatted. Then I tried to use the disk and Windows detected bad sectors and such. Sent back

Other Thoughts: Great RMA Service, contacted Newegg, provided RMA info in a few minutes via email and I sent it back. Decided to purchase a different brand - WD. It worked right out of the box with no issues.

5 out of 5 eggsThe new sweet spot

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Running a FreeBSD 10 ZFS mirror with 2 of these drives. Trivial installation. They swallowed 300GB of data with no complaints. ZFS scrub is currently running at 110MB/s even with light load against it. As quiet as the prior pair of WD Greens I was running, and supposedly pull less power too, and yet faster. Perfect for a home NAS.

Cons: For now, none.

Other Thoughts: I've long favored WD as typically holding the sweet spot between power, noise, with still _acceptable_ performance and capacity for the HOME user. Seagate may be changing my mind with these drives.

5 out of 5 eggsSeems to be just fine

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: First -- Folks! Lissen up here! The newer high capacity drives such as WD Red and Seagate NAS have spawned more than their share of ambivalent reviews -- some showing "DOA" or "died within x months or y days."

The industry has gone through some technical changes with "AF" disks and GPT partitions required for disks over 2TB. While Windows 7 SP1 may have the patch for "AF" incorporated, WHS-2011 needs to have it downloaded through Windows Update. I might be suspicious that misalignment of AF drives or an attempt to create MBR partitions when GPT is warranted may lead to these RMAs people mention. But 2TB drives such as the ones I review here are fine for MBR partitioning.

So far, once properly formatted under either AHCI mode or as a RAID disk under a RAID controller, these disks seem to be just fine. You are going to get a higher percentage of one-egg reviews because people with bad experiences are more likely to post their discontent. Even so, acknowledging the sample bias, those reviews can also be indicative of QC shortcomings.

For that, I haven't found any yet with these drives, of which I've ordered and received a total of four. I DO suggest that people format these drives as AHCI mode, then download SeaTools from the Seagate web-site and run the "All-Long" test on them. That's the better basis for initiating an RMA.

Cons: Actually, I haven't found any "cons." I chose to RMA one of these drives "before I got my act together" (see "other thoughts.") Egg seems to have THEIR act together when it comes to their RMA process.

Other Thoughts: Let me apologize to EGG for having mis-diagnosed one of these disks as "damaged." In regard to that, you can see my review of the StarTech PEXSAT34RH AHCI/RAID controller. The apparent failure of the drive I RMA'd was due to a mis-installed driver for the controller. After that, I was going to RMA the controller, but managed to sort things out with proper driver installation. This may be the first time I know of that I RMA'd an item which seemed damaged, but wasn't.
