4 out of 5 eggsTime Will Tell

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Picked up 2 of the 3TB drives for my NAS build. I have used the 2TB version for other builds. So far the drives seem to load and go right to work. They have good speed and are quite. They are running 24 hours for a few days, then only while the Storage system is needed. Needs flex so it puts them to the test.

Cons: None as of yet .... Still testing.

Other Thoughts: Only time and usage will tell for these drives. If they run as well as the 2TB version, going to be a great buy. I hope Seagate lives up to its good reputation.. Running RAID setup well, will be going to RAID 10 soon. Then I will see how it goes.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA. Not good.

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Shipped fast.

Cons: Loud clunking noise then nothing. Seagate just lost my company as customer. No reason for this to happen. Obviously wasn't tested before shipment. Box was in perfect condition with sufficient bubble wrap.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Drives are reliable and solid. Two have been running for over a year, so I decided to get two more to double my NAS storage.

Cons: Of the two new drives, one was DOA and had to be replaced. Four out of five working drives, four out of five stars.

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Excellent drives for my NAS server just wish it was a 5 year warranty like drives use to be without having to pay more money for the warranty.

Cons: None so far and like to keep it that way.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Lots of space, reasonable price

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I bought three of these to put into my new Synology DS-412+. They all passed the SMART test and I've got a ton of space for my media. Been running full-time for about three months now with no problem.

4 out of 5 eggsGood HDD for Storage Server

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast read and write speed, large capacity. Runs cool. Quiet seeking.

Cons: Somewhat pricey, hopefully more reliable than desktop drives.

Other Thoughts: After the failure of 4 Barracuda 1.5TB drives in a storage server I switched to the more expensive NAS drives for overall reliability. After about 6 months I haven't had any issues thus far, however time will tell.

5 out of 5 eggsNice drive but mix brands and watch capacity

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Nice cool running drive. I like that the firmware is optimized for NAS vs Windows optimized (try 99 times and die) so NAS users and OS can properly detect issues just like "the big boys"

Nice compromise of drive rotational speed & on-disk cache well suited for NAS access as well as heat and power in NAS devices.

Cons: Capacity at the URE (statistical capacity for unrecoverable read) limit for reconstruction. See article search below. Nothing against Seagate (or WED et all) but it's a capacity Con unless you design your NAS for it.

Other Thoughts: I recommend mixing drive brands in any raid/nas disk group. Every manufacturer has their bad lots, such as Seagate Moose a few years back. If all you've got is one brand / model then if they start failing they'll usually all be failing and recovery is tough.

I also recommend watching capacity and this drive is right at statistical limits without careful consideration of your raid groups. Search "Why RAID 5 Stopped Working in 2009" and read that. Succinctly statistical actual disk error levels nearly guarantee a URE every 3TB (even current drives). So with big (and bigger) drives you're almost guaranteed a URE which will trash your raid group unlesss you make careful choices about your raid groups.

For a NAS drive NEWEGG should include the power requirements under specifications. For my R4 case and 8-10 drives how big of a power supply do I need? The Newegg product link also didn't go to the product page. Had to find it myself

Seagate also made it difficult to find the detailed specs even with the model number

The power is 4.8 watts which is the spec I was looking for.
