4 out of 5 eggsGood HDD for Storage Server

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast read and write speed, large capacity. Runs cool. Quiet seeking.

Cons: Somewhat pricey, hopefully more reliable than desktop drives.

Other Thoughts: After the failure of 4 Barracuda 1.5TB drives in a storage server I switched to the more expensive NAS drives for overall reliability. After about 6 months I haven't had any issues thus far, however time will tell.

5 out of 5 eggsNice drive but mix brands and watch capacity

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Nice cool running drive. I like that the firmware is optimized for NAS vs Windows optimized (try 99 times and die) so NAS users and OS can properly detect issues just like "the big boys"

Nice compromise of drive rotational speed & on-disk cache well suited for NAS access as well as heat and power in NAS devices.

Cons: Capacity at the URE (statistical capacity for unrecoverable read) limit for reconstruction. See article search below. Nothing against Seagate (or WED et all) but it's a capacity Con unless you design your NAS for it.

Other Thoughts: I recommend mixing drive brands in any raid/nas disk group. Every manufacturer has their bad lots, such as Seagate Moose a few years back. If all you've got is one brand / model then if they start failing they'll usually all be failing and recovery is tough.

I also recommend watching capacity and this drive is right at statistical limits without careful consideration of your raid groups. Search "Why RAID 5 Stopped Working in 2009" and read that. Succinctly statistical actual disk error levels nearly guarantee a URE every 3TB (even current drives). So with big (and bigger) drives you're almost guaranteed a URE which will trash your raid group unlesss you make careful choices about your raid groups.

For a NAS drive NEWEGG should include the power requirements under specifications. For my R4 case and 8-10 drives how big of a power supply do I need? The Newegg product link also didn't go to the product page. Had to find it myself

Seagate also made it difficult to find the detailed specs even with the model number

The power is 4.8 watts which is the spec I was looking for.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: These drives perform well and are inexpensive NAS drives. Highly recommend.

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Heavy Feels well built.

Cons: I purchased x2 3TB HDD for my Dell R210 loaded with FreeNAS on a USB one failed after 2 days.

Other Thoughts: I have bought and stood by Seagate products for along time but these NAS HDD devices are a poor workmanship by my boys. I own a total of 20TB worth of HDD hardware by Seagate, but shoppers beware of this product please.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drives...

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Drive Space, 3 platters per drive...

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I have 5 of these in RAID 5 with just over 11TB of usable space for my media server. Read speeds are pretty good considering I was using individual WD Green drives that spin down when not used. This array is always on, never lags, hiccups, nothing! Been using these for just over 2 months.

5 out of 5 eggsNo DOAs

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: ordered 3 all survived 4 hr NAS data scrub
ordered 2 more still good!
Used in Synology 412+ and Asustor 604t NAS units
quiet and cool.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Why the insistence on a 7200RPM drive for a NAS drive array has very little importance for storage only, The faster drive is important for server based applications and ;VMs and iSCSI shares,

5 out of 5 eggsNo DOAs

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: No DOAs on First order of 3 (st3000VN000) all quiet, cool in well built NAS unit. Just order 2 more will follow up with report on those.
More than fast enough for backup and storage

Cons: none yet!

Other Thoughts: I am alarmed at the reported failure rate and DOA rate for newer Hard Drives over 1TB, I have over 8 drives 5-7 years old on home computers used several hours daily,

I have had only 1 DOA on hard drive in last 11 years

3 out of 5 eggsGood...if it works

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: This drive is great when it works. I got two of these for a mirror setup for all my photos/videos. The drives are plenty fast and 3TB is a nice capacity for media. The price was right when I bought them.

Cons: I had one drive fail on me about a week after purchase. Newegg handled the replacement flawlessly, but having a failure is still a pain. The replacement drive has been working for about 5 months, but just recently disappeared from my drives (Windows 7 system). I am going to keep an eye on it but this replacement drive might also be failing.

Other Thoughts: Since I bought these to store personal photos/videos I need a drive that is reliable, but I probably wouldn't purchase these again with the reliability I have experienced. They have a great capacity, but it doesn't mean anything if the drive fails.
