4 out of 5 eggsnot bad i guess (3tb version)

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: out of the "NAS" type hard drives, these seem to just barely edge out the others in performance. It almost looks like seagate did just enough to make sure this drive does better. (but it comes at a cost, see others)

you get an extra year coverage over the desktop drives & technically these drives are designed to work in RAID arrays.

Keep an eye on the price, these are always going on some sort of sale.

Cons: 1. not taking an egg away but, one of the drives i got were bad out of the box. I tried 2 different arrays in a single PC then i tried just using it as a direct drive on a built in port but the pc could not initialize the drive. Newegg RMA'd it and i got a new one within a week.

2. ONLY a 3 year warranty. Your paying MORE for the same size drive, yet getting slower results. Your trade off is to be able to use these drives in a NAS device. Why can't my extra money get me a little more coverage. ? ?

3. Speed isn't something too spectacular. According to specs, the Maximum sustained transfer rate for the 3/4TB models is 180MB/s, however in some testing, i was only able to get about 130MB/s per a single disk. Once i RAIDed all 4 into a Raid 0, i got about 533MB/s. Dont get me wrong for a file server, that isn't bad at all, but i would have expected a little better. Something around the 620MB/s (based off the tech listed specs)

Other Thoughts: YES, i'm running 4 in a Raid 0. This is not the only copy of the data, its 1 of 3. So i can enjoy the luxury of having a fast data store for pc access.

Yes i know that in my nextwork, having bonded nics between my desktop and NAS will yield me a max rate of 256MB/s, so i'm not too upset that the disk are only getting around 533MB/s.

Oh, one of the CON's of having the fastest NAS type hard drive is that it uses more power (wattage) to run, because the drive runs at 5900RPM vs the tradition 5400RPM.

Since my server runs 24/7 i wanted to make it very energy efficient. My old standard Business Class drives would idle at 9watts, these drives idle at 4.3watts. At full load, they go up to about 7.8watts (vs the older 14watts).

Would i recommend these.., unless the RED's are on a massive sale OR you need something to be SUPER SUPER low power (Reds idle at like 3.4 watts), yeah i would get these.

as always you can gmail me at evil homer clone.

good luck

4 out of 5 eggs+12 month review

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Above average warranty.
Drives run cool and quiet.

+1 star

Cons: 1 of my 9 drives failed after 16 months of continuous use.
(No stars taken off for this)

Other Thoughts: These drives are marketed as NAS/surveillance drives, but are mechanically identical to desktop drives. There may be some firmware tweaks (though I have my doubts), so you're basically paying for an 1 yr extended warranty (3 yrs total).

Performance is average for these drives.

I've used Seagate drives for me last few NAS builds, they seem to be fairly reliable. I've had DOA drives and drive failures from just about every drive manufacture out there. Its really just a gamble, which is why you should thoroughly stress test all drives before putting them into production.

I purchased 9 of these in October 2012 for a FreeNAS project I was working on. All 9 drives arrived in working order. I use these drives in a RAID 10+1 configuration. They act as DVR storage for 6 HDTV streams.

Today March 2014 I had my first failure. This is to be expected, all drives fail eventually. 16 months isn't too bad, and fortunately it died within the warranty period.

On the down side Seagate will replace it with a previously failed a.k.a "Refurbished" drive, which I can't trust for critical data, so I'll be shelling out some $$$ for a new spare.

Overall I would buy these drives again because of the the extended warranty, cool and quiet operation.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives with Average Performance

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Made for 24/7 usage
Uses 1 TB platters
Has a 3 year warranty
No vibration whatsoever
Very quiet, never made a sound while in use. The only time I ever heard them was when the drives spun back up from being off and after the initial spin up they returned to being silent.

Ran excessive benchmarks and tests to try and break in the drives in order to ensure they were not likely to fail early on before configuring them for use in my server. Initially and after my stress tests the drives reported no SMART errors of any kind and all of the values were good and where they should be.

I bought two of the 3 TB models and here are their benchmark results:

Crystal Disk Mark – Drive 1
• Sequential: Read = 147.3 MB/s, Write = 134.9 MB/s
• 512k: Read = 52.34 MB/s, Write = 87.40 MB/s
• 4k: Read = 0.726 MB/s, Write = 1.525 MB/s
• 4k QD32: Read = 1.152 MB/s, Write = 1.546 MB/s

Crystal Disk Mark – Drive 2
• Sequential: Read = 145.3 MB/s, Write = 137.3 MB/s
• 512k: Read = 52.85 MB/s, Write = 89.28 MB/s
• 4k: Read = 0.735 MB/s, Write = 1.503 MB/s
• 4k QD32: Read = 1.158 MB/s, Write = 1.536 MB/s

HD Tune – Drive 1
• Minimum: 73.6 MB/s
• Maximum: 162.5 MB/s
• Average: 130.2 MB/s
• Access Time: 17.7 ms
• Burst Rate: 167.4 MB/s

HD Tune – Drive 2
• Minimum: 67.7 MB/s
• Maximum: 155.7 MB/s
• Average: 124.8 MB/s
• Access Time: 17.8 ms
• Burst Rate: 166.4 MB/s

Temperature (Ran significantly cooler than two Seagate 2 TB ST2000M001 in my home server)
• Drive 1: 82.4 °F
• Drive 2: 80.6 °F

Power Consumption
• Idle Drive Off - 0.95 Watts
• Idle Drive On – 5.15 Watts
• Load Read – 7.45 Watts
• Load Write – 7.75 Watts

I also tested the new drive on a SATA II connection and as I figured the results were within a margin of error as some values were higher and some were lower than when on the SATA III connection. So if you don’t have a SATA III capable motherboard, don’t worry about it.

Cons: These drives spin at 5900 RPM. The performance improvement by switching them to 7200 RPM would be great but I assume Seagate didn’t want to do that in order to help ensure they have little to no vibration which currently they don’t. Also the power consumption would go up and again I’m sure Seagate was aiming for a lower power envelop for these drives.

Other Thoughts: Overall these are very good drives, they run silent and vibration free and don’t consume a lot of power. I would recommend these drives for anyone with setup where they have a server, a NAS or just a computer they leave on all the time. The performance isn’t where I’d like it to be but is still good enough for my usage as they are still faster than the maximum throughput of a Gigabit Ethernet connection so they are prefect for my home server. Again regarding the performance I bought theses for reliability as they are made for 24/7 use not because they are the fastest mechanical hard drives.

Not related to the drive but Newegg’s new hard drive packaging is fantastic as the drive is held together so tightly I could barely get it out of the box.

*All tests were conducted three times to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results.

5 out of 5 eggsSilent and Cool

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Initially these drives ran warm. After 1 week of non stop running they cooled off, after breaking in. Now they run about twice as cool as all my old WD and Samsung hard disks. These are silent, you can't hear anything even sitting 2 feet from the computer case. You can only hear these if you put your ear up to the computer case. NO DOA!

Cons: Plain looking, Seagate not as popular as WD. Better reviews than WD drive. NAS drive has 7 second error recovery timeout limit, so you should use these drives with a hardware raid card.

Other Thoughts: I am running 2 drives in raid and haven't had one issue. I am running on an Adaptec 3405 raid card, and it works flawlessly in Raid 1.

1 out of 5 eggs  3 of 7 DOA

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Size, price, should be great for NAS system

Cons: Exceptionally high DOA (at least in my case)

Other Thoughts: I bought 6 of these for a home NAS system. Due to the cost of 6, I bought them over 2-3 months. Foolish me for not paying attention to those mentioning high DOA rates. Never had a DOA drive so surely it couldn't happen to me. Therefore, I waited until all 6 drives were in - along with some other h/w - to install and test. 2 of the 6 were DOA (wow!). I ordered a replacement for one DOA (the one within the return window) and initiated the RMA process. The replacement drive (7th) arrived DOA too. End of the story? 4 stars for NewEgg's RMA process. While a little cumbersome, in the end NewEgg took back 4 of the 7 drives (the 3 DOA drives - one of which was outside of the return window - kudos) and one good drive eligible for return. I am nervous about the reliability of the 3 other drives. As a result I've switched to another drive. Again, 4 stars for NewEgg RMA. I am pleased with their service. If you are brave enough to order these make sure and do a full read/write test immediately.

5 out of 5 eggsZERO Vibration - For Raid only

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: NAS is another name for server. A server is a computer with a raid array. So a NAS drive is just a "raid" drive. WD green won't work with raid, this drive will work with any raid system, home user, or actual server, or a NAS. I got 2 and they work perfect, they run at 5900 rpm, and run silent, without any sign of vibration when idling. Their smoothness is literally amazing, even if you touch the drive you can't feel it running. The drive is not silent when reading but it's quiet.

Cons: Slightly louder than WD green on read seeking.
The Seagate NAS drives are so quiet when idling, you can't even tell they are on. There is no vibration, even when you put your hand on them. In comparison my old WD Blue vibrates loudly when sitting next to these, and caused my entire case to vibrate.

Other Thoughts: A raid drive has poor error recovery, since they have TLER turned on, which is "time limited error recovery" meaning they don't spend much time fixing their own errors! Without a raid controller. NAS (raid) drives have a 7 second limit (TLER) on error recovery. After 7 seconds, the raid controller is notified of an error, and the raid controller fixes the data. This drive is reliable enough that it may never have a problem without a raid controller, but you certainly don't want to use a "non raid" drive which does not have TLER because the raid array WILL fail the drive if it takes longer than 7 seconds when encountering an error.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I have 2 of these drives in a sinology 213+ NAS and they work great. I highly recommend these drives if you plan on using a NAS device. Remember, a NAS is on 24x7 and typically use software raid. The drives help protect against accidental dropping of the raid set. Can save days of rebuilding. I highly recommend spending the extra money on NAS/Enterprise drives for NAS devices and SMB servers.

Cons: NA

2 out of 5 eggshigh rate of DOA

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I have not had a chance to do a burn in of the 3 units that was not DOA. As far as power up, it seems to be consistent when powering up.. the time to DRD, and no ERR during Rom loading, seems to be quick. Interesting that all 3 drives have exact firmware code. Seems consistent all around.

Cons: other then when I order 9 units for a Synology 8 bay, thinking I would have 1 unit for backup, 6 was DOA right out of the packaging. It was a bugger to test since the synology also had long delay from trying to connect to the drive and I was in the dark till I manually tested each drive and found 6 was showing up with all sorts of size ranging form 0Bytes, 3GB, 4GB.. 2 of the six showed up as a SSD drive type with 3GB on the synology when I finally got it up.

Other Thoughts: wasn't expecting this high rate of a DOA .. I was planning for 1 or 2 drives out of 9, but 6 of 9 was a bit high. Could not even do a RAID 5 with remaining 3 so had to source locally since we were short on time, wish it would have worked out the first time. NewEqg did approve my refund request for the 6 so lets see how it goes.
