3 out of 5 eggsSeagate NAS HDD's batting .750

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Three out of the four I ordered worked out of the packaging.

Cons: One out of the four I ordered was Dead On Arrival (DOA).

Other Thoughts: Had to RMA one of the four drives I ordered. One would think that with "NAS" and all the hype about heavy, constant use, there would be better quality control.
I have four (4) of the non-NAS drives in my 8-bay Synology DS1813+ and decided to expand with four of these NAS drives (all are 4TB). The "normal" drives, back years ago when I ordered them, all worked flawlessly and have been since. I might have just got a lemon, but how does a lemon exist in a product that is so precisely manufactured to be more reliable than the non-NAS models?

5 out of 5 eggsGood drives

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Good drives. Have 4 in an unraid setup. They run 22-28c.

Cons: One drive is reporting errors even though Seatools says it is ok.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable drives. I would buy again if needed.

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I use them in external storage that is always up. In total I bough at least 6 of them - all of them still working. Very good drives, fast enough for external storage needs and reliable.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsBig and Slow like expected

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 1. Holds an enormous amount of data.
2. Runs at 5900 rpm so doesn't get as hot as a 7200 rpm. It is 29°C in the front of a Cooler Master HAF 932 case surrounded by other HDD.
3. Is so big that I am using it to back up my NAS data without RAID (in case the power supply in either of the old NAS RAID 5 enclosures tanks).

Cons: 1) When transferring 2 or 3 tb to the disk, especially from a Gigabit Ethernet NAS, it is slow. Try to do the initial transfers overnight or when you won't need the PC. Once you have the bulk of the data transferred, you are set.
2) Since it's over 2tb, it Initializes with GPT instead of MBR but minor compatibility issues are the price for the huge amount of storage.
3) As Seagate says, this is more for 24/7 use like in an NAS. Don't expect 7200 rpm HDD performance with a 5900 rpm HDD and you will be more satisfied.

Other Thoughts: 1) Can't comment on durability but am optimistic since it stays cool at 4tb inside a PC and I have run 5900 rpm Seagate HDD for years in my NAS machines.
2) Started ripping my CD's and "going digital" with NAS machines when 0.5 tb was the biggest HDD available. This 4 tb is awesome. Would get a larger HDD but can't come close to filling this one up.
3) Since my data needs are personal-sized, this HDD is slowly liberating me from RAID arrays after many years.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives!

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: working strong 3 months after installing into the home server and they run fast and quiet so what else can you ask for?

Cons: it was $230 for 8 tb of storage. ouch

Other Thoughts: I know Seagate dosent have as good of a track record as wd does but I have NEVER had a segate drive fail out of the over 15 drives ive bought from them. I have a drive from 2004 that I still have running! it is super slow and only holds 320 gb but that's a track record I just cant throw away. when it comes to buying a new hard drive I always go seagate and they have yet to disappoint.

4 out of 5 eggsMy first NAS

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Good price point.

Cons: 1 of 4 of these drives was DOA.

Other Thoughts: I ordered 4 of these. 2 to start and then a month later, 2 more. On the second batch, one of them was DOA. Newegg promptly replaced it no questions asked. 4 of 5 eggs because of this, but once these things run, they run great. I still don't 100% trust HD's no matter how good they claim to be so I backup my entire NAS to external drives and power those down when the backups are finished.

3 out of 5 eggsFirst DOA..then good

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: reasonable cost and peformance for a NAS hard disk

Cons: First drive was DOA. No SMART at all. NewEgg promptly sent a replacement that is good..

Other Thoughts: The big question is how reliable it will be. I used many drives from WD or Segate but recently they do not seem to last very long.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I have 8 of these and none of them have failed.

Cons: Slower spindle speed than some competing brands, but all depends on your need. I get about 95-110 MB/sec transfers over GbE so I can't really complain.

Other Thoughts: Been using several of these for months in a 24/7 environment and have not had one issue. I realize that there have been some issues with Seagate's 3TB drives in the past, but they seem to have fixed the issues and made a reliable drive (at least in my experience).

5 out of 5 eggsPromise promises, Seagate Delivers

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I admit to not having the best knowledge about NAS and my others had been bears to setup. The NAS ST4000V jumped on my hardware, showed me all my RAID configurations and helped me select the best for my needs and then set the thing up. I had 4-4TB Seagate drives and they have been performing since. My son hooked his Apple up to it and it backed up all his stuff and then did daily backups.

Cons: No Cons - out of the retail box, shipping blocks removed, drive carriages snapped on, drives installed into NAS, plugged in and away it went.

Other Thoughts: It's idiot proof - I'm the evidence of that

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Good while working.

Cons: We haven't experiences as high of a failure rate as others that have posted...but we still have seen around a 25% failure rate.
My biggest complaint is they way that Seagate has elected to handle the RMA's. We recently had to return a drive that was only a few weeks old - only to receive back a "Certified Repaired" RMA drive. Other vendors don't issue these in RMA - so we will be electing to choose differently in the future.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sonny,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your NAS HDD, as this is not typical or expected drive behavior. We would like to talk with you by phone to determine the underlying cause and available resolution to the problem. A support case (#04849447) has been created that will reference your review and our response. If from the US or Canada, our contact number for support is 800-732-4283.
