NASWorks includes features such as extended error recovery controls, minimized vibration effects and advanced power management. Furthermore, NASWorks improves drive health and performance, delivering the 24x7 reliability demanded by 1- to 8-bay systems.

NASWorks: Ensuring Drive Health in RAID Arrays
NAS error recovery controls help ensure drives maintain the highest data integrity without compromising system performance. Working together with a RAID array, NAS error recovery controls protect your data where traditional desktop HDDs may fail and cause the RAID to start the time-consuming task of rebuilding the entire drive.

NAS HDD

NASWorks: Enabling Performance in Multi-Drive Environments
Standard desktop drives can emit vibrations that become amplified in systems with two or more drives, compromising performance and data integrity. With the support of the NASWorks dual-plane balance, drive vibrations are dampened so that they can perform consistently and reliably in applications with one to eight drives.

NAS HDD

High-Capacity NAS HDD
You can maximize your storage and minimize costs with up to 4TB on a single NAS HDD—that's enough for up to 800 thousand photos, one million songs or 500 hours of HD video content at home. Or, it's enough space to store CAD files, images and databases at the office.

5 out of 5 eggsPromise promises, Seagate Delivers

Pros: I admit to not having the best knowledge about NAS and my others had been bears to setup. The NAS ST4000V jumped on my hardware, showed me all my RAID configurations and helped me select the best for my needs and then set the thing up. I had 4-4TB Seagate drives and they have been performing since. My son hooked his Apple up to it and it backed up all his stuff and then did daily backups.

Cons: No Cons - out of the retail box, shipping blocks removed, drive carriages snapped on, drives installed into NAS, plugged in and away it went.

Other Thoughts: It's idiot proof - I'm the evidence of that

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Good while working.

Cons: We haven't experiences as high of a failure rate as others that have posted...but we still have seen around a 25% failure rate.
My biggest complaint is they way that Seagate has elected to handle the RMA's. We recently had to return a drive that was only a few weeks old - only to receive back a "Certified Repaired" RMA drive. Other vendors don't issue these in RMA - so we will be electing to choose differently in the future.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sonny,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your NAS HDD, as this is not typical or expected drive behavior. We would like to talk with you by phone to determine the underlying cause and available resolution to the problem. A support case (#04849447) has been created that will reference your review and our response. If from the US or Canada, our contact number for support is 800-732-4283. If outside of this region, or for additional support options, please try us here under Product Support (choose your region):

2 out of 5 eggsFor NAS Raid Array

Pros: On sale at the time, known brand with good warranty support, effortless setup

Cons: Closing in on 1 year of ownership I am having to send back 3 of 8 drives that I installed into an 8-bay RAID setup. My media started displaying errors so I used the check disk on the raid array and the drives were reporting over 30 bad blocks each. I repaired the drives and ran the block scan one more time. 3-8 more bad blocks found per drive.
I fixed them and ran another scan to verify the drives were stable until I could get the replacements. More bad blocks found. - Extremely worried

Other Thoughts: I am currently worried that my RAID arrive will not last until my cross shipped replacements come. 37% Failure rate on these drives for me. Luckily Seagate does have good warranty support so I will be replacing these soon.

1 out of 5 eggsReal Bad Quality Control

Pros: None.

Cons: Out of the 2 nas hhd's. One was DOA. Gone. D. E. D. DED. No worky. No matter what i did I tried both ways, first via internal sata in th hdd cages, and then on the hotswap deck. Its first long beep was its last. then i tried seagate's disc wizard and seatools. It did not show up
and intitializing it only ended in a i/o device error. so it was complete ****tastic stuff. Not a happy camper.

Other Thoughts: You have a 50% chance of an expensive paperweight.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great in my RAID

Pros: I purchased five of these to put in to a RAID 5 that I was building. All of them worked perfectly so I bought another to use as a hot spare. All six have been running for around six months with no drive problems.

SEE "Other thoughts"

Cons: Not ultra fast, but fine for what I wanted.

Other Thoughts: I see a lot of reviews where people are using NAS or RAID drives as their only drive. The manufacturers tell you not to do it, but people do it anyway. That is one source of problems.

This drive is designed to NOT be a desktop drive, it is a RAID drive and MUST be used in a RAID to be reliable. Don't just buy the cheaper model, buy the one that is made for your application EITHER RAID or desktop. A NAS is essentially a RAID so this applies to both usages .

Also, a lot of reviews of hard drives in general have talked about DOA drives. I have complained to Newegg about their packaging of drives. Others have also complained about it. We think that the poor packaging is a factor in the bad drives.

Very recently, the drives I have been receiving are packed very well. It seems that Newegg has listened. Thank you, I hope that continues. I also hope that it solves the problem of a high percentage of hard drives that are DOA or go bad quickly.

These are now on special again so I am going to order a couple more of these to increase the size of my RAID again. I would recommend them to my clients because my experience with them has been good.

1 out of 5 eggsABSOLUTE JUNK / FAIL RATE / DO NOT TRUST

Pros: Size vs cost ratio is good, but the fail rate of these drives makes this a terrible purchase. Do not trust these drives with your data.

Cons: Bought 7 drives (6 for RAID array, plus spare). FOUR of the 7 reported errors (on two different RAID cards, in two different servers) immediately out of the package. NEWEGG would not refund my money on these JUNK drives because I wrote our asset tag information on the drive before installing them (who knew proper inventory control would hose me?)

Other Thoughts: Untrustworthy. Do not be tempted by low prices.
