Seagate 500GB Backup Plus drive is very Mac-like in its form factor, though a little larger than the comparable (but decidedly PC-like) Buffalo Mini-station.
Here is the adapter disconnected from the drive portion. The drive portion is a bare drive and plastic case. No circuit board. The exposed connector is the drive's interface. The adapter is a handy, stand-alone SATA-to-USB adapter.
Black Magic Speed Test v2.2 on a newly formatted (HFS+/journaled) Seagate Backup 500GB Silver drive. Connected to a 2012 MacBook Air11in. via USB 3.0 / OS X 10.8.2
Pros: small foottprint and a good amount of space for the size
Cons: on my regular Windows notebook speed is not impressive since it's USB2.0 but it works ..
Other Thoughts: if you have a usb 3.0 you will see a big advantage of speed

Pros: My wife, a non-techie person plugged the device into her MacBook. It worked right out of the box and she was able to back up her system. No problems and no questions for me, a Windows user. That rates 5 eggs as far as I am concerned.
