5 out of 5 eggsHDD ONLY

Pros: Price is low (HDD ONLY) - and the drive is absolutely quiet.

Cons: deep sata connections, you may have to remove case to access sata connections.

Other Thoughts: This is exactly what I needed to use with my Simple TV. This is a FANTASTIC price for a 500GB DRIVE ONLY. You have to figure out how to connect the sata to USB or ESATA or whatever your use case is. You can remove the drive from its plastic case, or find a Seagate adapter that will work.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for my application

Pros: Compact, well packed, and the price was right. I purchased to externalize my DVR SATA storage and 500 GB was the size I needed. After I modified my cable connector to work and initialized the drive to my Magnavox DVR it worked perfectly.

Cons: The SATA plug is recessed in the case so a standard SATA cable plug housing interfered so it wouldn't go deep enough to connect. It so happens I was able to modify the plug I purchased rather than remove the drive from it's housing.

I needed a M-F cable for my system and this is the cable I purchased -

The plug housing is rubberlike rather than hard plastic. I took a sharp knife and cut through center on both sides of the plug just deep enough so I could fold the top and bottom of the plug housing backwards allowing the plug to go in further and make connection. The flaps when released overlap a bit on the top and bottom of the drive. It won't be disconnected often but I suppose the flaps can be easily cut off.

Other Thoughts: Because of the recessed plug socket it would have been nice for Newegg to offer guidance for compatible cables in the description of the drive.

4 out of 5 eggsGoFlex portable ext. drive

Pros: This is a great deal for those who have already other Seagate GofLex external drives - they all have the same connecting USB3.0/2.0 or FireWire800 cables to SATA connection on the drive. I bought a while ago two GoFlex for Mac - the portable drive arrived with USB2.0 and FireWire800, and I also bought two with USB3.0 cable. They are all interchangeable cable adapters. Seagate also has Thunderbolt adaptor. So, with one USB3.0 cable adaptor I can use any of four GoFlex portable drives (not all at once), when I need speed for transfer files. That's why I bought these GoFlex drives now for $30, because I can use my extra cable adapters from my other portable drives. I think a cable adapter from portable Seagate Backup Plus can be used, too.

Cons: DVR expander is confusing advertising from NewEgg. This is a regular GoFlex ulta-portable external drive, but is being sold without a cable adapter, or base station.

Other Thoughts: A good deal for those who already have GoFlex cable adapters.

3 out of 5 eggsWhat a stupid design

Pros: There's a 500GB SATA drive inside the enclosure

Cons: The drive is totally useless when inside of the enclosure as far as I can tell.

Other Thoughts: I don't know what DVR you are supposed to connect this to but when the drive is in its case standard SATA cables don't work neither do SATA to USB cables. Once you remove the stupid case you can use whatever you desire. Maybe they just want you to void the warranty and this is how that service is provided.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat A DEAL

Pros: 500gb Sata hard drive inside

Cons: Don't buy this unless you know what you are doing and have no issues tearing apart a product to get whats inside.

Other Thoughts: I got this on clearance for 30 bucks. As a DVR Extender.... well I have no idea, I ripped it open as soon as I got it, added a 4 dollar Sata to USB enclosure and and bam, 500 GB portable hardrive for 30 dollars.

As a note you'll need to get a free program such as Swiss Army Knife or Easus as the drive is not at all setup for windows out of the box.

3 out of 5 eggsSo-So drive

Pros: + VERY affordable at time of this writing

Cons: - The drive itself is rather cheap, naturally, and very noisy/clicky sounding. It checks out clean and fine but it's not something I trust with data I want to keep.

- It's rather slow, which is no surprise, but it is definitely on the slower side of slow to be sure. Access times are longer than even a stock PS3 hard drive, but it'll still get the job done.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my PS3. If you think you can remove it from the enclosure in a sly manner, you'd be mistaken. You need to pry the case open which you MIGHT be able to pull off with no damage with proper plastic tools, but then once you get the case off you'll find a drive taped solidly with aluminum tape, which there is no hope to remove without notice. You won't hurt the drive, but you'll definitely void your warranty.

So, if you intend on removing the drive from the enclosure, be sure to test it first. If you have a slim sata cable and power, or an adapter, you can easily test before opening it.

So, that's just something to be aware of. There's no way to remove the drive without it being obviously tampered.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrid packing

Pros: Will hopefully work when taken out of case.

Cons: This is a new all time low for packing. Two drives thrown loose in a large box to be thrown around crashing into each other the whole way here. Not happy with the abysmal packing.

4 out of 5 eggsOriginally misrepresented but nonetheless usable

Pros: Contains 2 1/2" form factor hard drive

Cons: Drive is encased in a somewhat useless shell

Other Thoughts: I, too picked this hard drive as a shell shocker, and I, too discovered that it was indeed not what was originally represented. However, being that this is basically a 2.5" hard drive in an external case, I was even happier to discover another way to use it.

My original intent was a cheap way to store my iTunes library rather than gobbling up the more expensive SSD space I use for more dynamic files. 500GB seemed like a plentiful amount of storage, and this drive a good use of an external connector.

Of course, using it as an external drive didn't work out. BUT, removing the drive from its shell and plugging it in to my ICY DOCK MB994SP-4SB-1 Mobile Rack did. In fact, you can connect this drive just as you would an SSD. The drive is ever so slightly wider than an SSD, though, so it took a bit of mild force to get it to slide in the 2.5" drive bay.
Once inserted it fired right up, and I just deleted the non-NTFS volume, created a new simple volume and performed a quick format. Viola!

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price

Cons: Lack of connector cable (and at the time) lack of explanation that it is missing the cable

Other Thoughts: A million thanks to Jacques B. for posting the detailed instructions on how to open the case. My solution was basically the same, but I had to cut basically all of the top part of the back side to fit it.

I purchased "
Dual USB 2.0 to SATA 15+7 Pin Data and Power Cable Adapter" from eXay for $5.27

If interested I can post pictures of the "open heart surgery"

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Nice little 500 gig 5400 rpm drive for shell shocker price and now seems to be priced at $29.99 everyday. As always fast shipping and packaged well. A NewEgg standard in my opinion.

Cons: Very disappointed in NewEgg for the first time. I called in to customer service for assistance with the adapter needed to make it work. I excaladed the call to speak to a supervisor who said he would stay on this problem until resolved and call or email me with a solution. I have had NO return communication at all. Nothing. Again very disappointed.

Other Thoughts: Newegg remains the "go to" people for all computer parts and accessories. This is the first time they have not met my high expectations.
