1 out of 5 eggsBUY SOMETHING ELSE

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: worked for a few months

Cons: First I couldn't install the backup software on windows 8.1? called and Seagate said its a known issue and they are "working on fixing it" (never fixed it). Then the external drive completely broke after only 6 months of very light use! I barely used this drive to move a few images between computers. Never physically moved.
Only 6 months after I bought the external hard drive it started acting up. I tried formatting it and that fixed it for about 1 day. Then the drive completely failed. Can't format. $100 dollar brick! Should have done more research because some credible tests found SEAGATE HARD DRIVE FAIL RATES ARE VERY VERY HIGH! SAVE YOUR MONEY! BUY ANY OTHER BRAND! Do a quick search of "seagate annual failure rate" and you can see that about 10% of Seagate hard drives fail after a year while other brands... only about 1%. TEN TIMES THE FAILURE RATE!!!

Unacceptable!

1 out of 5 eggsFailed right out of the box

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: Only pro is that I have the previous model which worked fine until damaged

Cons: SW loaded when I connected to my computer but when you try to back-up it gets to 2% and then stops and there's no way to get it to finish the backup

Other Thoughts: This is probably infant mortality but there are too many highly rated vendors and models to try another one of these

1 out of 5 eggsNot compatible with Win 7 backup

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: None for me and the intended purpose

Cons: Just want to make a point that the drive does not seem to be compatible with Win7 or earlier native backup. I have not researched the actual problem but in the reviews for a similar Seagate drive there is a mention of "native 4k sectors" which at not compatible with Windows native backup. I have 3 of these drives (and one of the other model). None work with Windows 7 backup. I suppose I will have to just use native Seagate software which I am not fond of

1 out of 5 eggsSomething seriously wrong

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: None

Cons: Bought two of them and both failed the Seagate disk tests (short and long) right out of the box. In the many years that I have bought hard drives both personal and for business, only one time have I had a hard drive be bad immediately. For these two to have issues, it leads me to believe there is an endemic problem with these drives. Buyer beware.

3 out of 5 eggsFailed in SeaTools right out of the box!

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Failed both Short Generic and Long Generic tests in SeaTools right out of the box.

Other Thoughts: Got this drive for $70 (early December 2014) which is quite cheap. That is about the only good thing about it. The drive failed both Short and Long Generic tests in Seatools right out of the box. That was the first thing I did after opening the package....testing the drive with Seagate own tool. Maybe, it was the tool itself. The Long Generic test could not even start and had to be manually aborted. No explanation of why the drive failed for the Short Generic test. This is not a good indicator for the longevity of this drive. Good thing I am not planning to keep any important files on this drive.

The drive still pass the short Drive Self Test passed just fine. I guess I will just keep it and get an RMA later if/when it fails.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Buy

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: I currently own 2 of these and I couldn't be happier. The on board software is frankly terrible, but the drives are very nice for the price. I just ordered 2 more of these for Cyber Monday (@$59 ea). Don't be fooled by the reviews of the formatting. These drives can be reformatted, and or removed from the external enclosures they come in to be used as regular drives. I'll update when I receive the 2 I just bought if anything pertinent comes up.

Cons: I wish the on board software was better. I am sure if motivated enough, other software could be used...

Other Thoughts: Great buy for the price (especially the cyber Monday price)

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome HDD

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: I would say it's an awesome HDD.
I had a portable one, and what I like about this one is that it has a separate power connector.
I like the size, (not internal space), because it just makes my life easier. I use this product to back up all my data.

Cons: None.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Compatible with Windows BLock Level Backups

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: Seems like a fine disk for the money IF you plan to use Seagate's software or you are using Windows 8 / Server 2012.

Cons: This is an advanced format disk, despite being only 2TB. This should be MUCH more clearly stated. It is not compatible with Windows 2008 R2. It is only compatible with Windows 2012 and better. You can copy files to it fine, but Windows Server Backup will error out immediately because it's not compatible with advanced format disks.

Other Thoughts: If the compatibility issue/format were in the description, an RMA would not have been necessary. They should state that this drive is advanced format. 2TB drives usually aren't.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hard Drive

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100

Pros: If you are looking for a fast HDD with allot of space then you can't go wrong with this product.

USB 3.0 is great and the HDD itself has 64mb of cache. I have put allot of data on the drive and getting to the data is very quick. I have a 500GB USB 2.0 HDD but this one is much faster. So you will really notice the difference with USB 3.0

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a fast, quite, reliable HDD. I would recommend this to you. For the price you are getting a great HDD.

Video's and 24MP pictures load up from this HDD like it was connected via SATA in my PC.
