1 out of 5 eggsDisconnects During Large File Transfers

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT4000100

Pros: Large Capacity
USB 3

Cons: Randomly disconnects in Windows 8/8.1 on USB 3 connections when transferring large files.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this drive if you intend to use it for anything it was designed for.

I first used it to connect to a Lenovo ThinkPad T430 and pull some server backups from a NAS to this drive. I would see some great speeds of 112 MB/s. Then after about 10 minutes, the drive transfer speed would get to zero and lock up and then I would get an error message and I would hear the Windows notification for disconnecting a drive. This would be followed by a USB icon in the systray telling me that it was an unrecognized device. Most of the time I would have to reboot and go into device manager and uninstall and reinstall the USB storage device for this drive.

This problem lead to countless hours wasted and Lenovo replacing my entire motherboard.

I had 0 problems when connecting it to a USB 2.0 port on the laptop, as well as on a Windows 7 desktop.

Still thinking that it was a problem with this laptop and its USB 3 root hub, I connect it to a USB 2.0 port on a brand new Dell precision T5810 running Windows 8.1 and use it for a bit without a problem.

I realized after trying to transfer some large files to it that I was connected to a USB 2 port so I identify and connect it to a USB 3 port. Trying to transfer large files again and about 10 minutes in, the file transfer stalls and errors out again.Followed by the unrecognized device error.

What a waste of time and money. Off to find something that can actually transfer files with USB 3

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT4000100

Pros: Very quiet, super fast USB3, small size.

Cons: The only con I can give this backup drive is the case. As some other noted, it's a rectangular box with sharp edges. If the case edges were slightly rounded it would be more attractive (if you need an attractive drive), and less annoying to handle.

Other Thoughts: Change the case guys and it would be perfect!

5 out of 5 eggsHow to Fix Mac Settings

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT4000100

Pros: Inexpensive, small, separate power. Works OK with Mac IF you turn off "Put hard disks to sleep when possible"

Cons: Mac & Seagate "idle/sleep" don't get along smoothly in some configurations, resulting in the Mac losing sight of the disk.

Other Thoughts: I adjusted the Mac's Energy Saver settings and haven't had any more trouble with the Seagate vanishing. Backups are happening as expected and I sleep better at night.

3 out of 5 eggsNot so great for Mac / Time Machine

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT4000100

Pros: Inexpensive, small, separately powered

Cons: Mac OSX Time Machine backup software loses sight of the drive occasionally and says "Backup Failed." I've been rebooting when this occurs, but will check whether an unmount / disconnect / reconnect will fix it. Since I use encrypted filesystems, this makes me Very Nervous.

Other Thoughts: The case has very sharp edges -- it looks good, but doesn't have a good tactile feel (I disconnect it and lock it up every night). It also has a glossy finish that is terrible for fingerprints.

However, my main concern is that I have very low tolerance for any strangeness in my backup devices. This Seagate replaced a WD Elements external drive that had gotten full (and the WD replaced another one like it. If I could have gotten another WD, I would have.)

So far, the Seagate seems to be holding data, but it's not giving me the warm fuzzy feeling I'd like.
