3 out of 5 eggsNot Compatible

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Capacity

Cons: Low Compatibility - I bought this drive to go into my Seagate Black Armor NAS and found out it wasn't compatible I took a chance as I knew that the online list was outdated (my 4tb Seagate drives worked just fine). Well they didnt work. Now I'm looking for an external drive enclosure and it appears that most max out at 4tb. Looks like it's going in the PC.

4 out of 5 eggs6TB of Data On 1 Drive!

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: 6 terabytes of data on one disk! I have two home theater machines, one is for the family and one is mine. the family's server has the 4tb version but it is mixed drives with wd reds and 2 seagate 4tbs, and i put in 3 of these. maxed all the ports on it. they have enough room to last a year.

mine I recently built, i upgraded a lot of drives that were old, and small compared to this, 1tb and 1.5tbs i replaced 6 of those with 3 of these and 3 4tbs. I have more space and it will take me forever to fill it as well.

lastly i just built a friends htpc and he ordered twelve of these, twelve, thats 72 terabytes of space, of course he owns almost 1000 dvd's and blurays, always shopping those 2 or 3 for 1 deals at best buy or hitting the 5 for 5 bin at wal-mart.

Formatted into EXT4 the drives work just fine, i really didn't want to bother with NTFS, as we all know the more space taken the slower drives can be.

i wouldn't recommend power-using these drives, storage seems best, i've noticed they can run a little hot.

Cons: It mounts a bit different but fits my antec 1200 case. the temps on the first few I got were a bit hot, 46c at idle, but I increased my fan speeds to max and it dropped it a few degree's.

really no big cons, if anyone gets any doa's or the click of death that really happens in shipping/packaging, which is what I've learned.

why can't they warranty the drives for longer than two years, its 6tb, go back to at least three or five year warranty. this 2 year limited is horrible.

Other Thoughts: My goal overall is once these drop in price in the next few months to years, right now they are $299 when they go on sale, hopefully within the next few months if not i'll go to the 4tb, is slowly begin to replace my 2tb's that are getting old, worn out, or the warranty expires, to either 6tb or 4tb. I have a family media server, my media server, and two desktops that I would eventually like to switch all the drives to be one brand of drive.

right now each machine has their own brand, and several have a mix, i'm not worried about a RAID setup or using storage spaces or softRAID. with fedora I can simply create mounts by using blkid and set each to mount by the uuid of the drive.

some people think this is a bit much, but i know several friends who built new servers themselves and one has 32 drives of this and the other has 32 drives of wd reds but 4tb.

movies are getting bigger, blurays being 25-50gb some even have 4k now, its crazy how large files can be.

3 out of 5 eggsGood for Backups

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: - 6TB in a single drive for <$300
- Good drive for backing up data

Cons: - Surprisingly slow, you well notice it especially when coming out of idle to access.
- Runs very hot, first drive I have ever owned that ran at 52 degrees, cooling might be an issue for some.
- The programs I use to access smart info/monitor/benchmark ect are acting up with this drive

Other Thoughts: This drive feels like a prototype and the 6TB tech was not ready for prime-time just yet. It looks like they used every single nanometer of space to fit 6TB in 3.5 inch form. Even though I am a WD guy I own 3 of these drives in the 4TB version and was surprised how good they were, they are still running fine after years. This drive however I am not sure how long it will last. I would NOT recommend using this drive as a main drive, or for a media server or anything other than to backup your files to and let it sit. Luckily I bought this drive just for that purpose to backup 6TB of data.

4 out of 5 eggsWorking good so far, but makes terrible noise on spinup

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Largest capacity available, I plan to put 11 of these into my Cosmos II for my digital multi-media collection.

Cons: I put the first two into a RAID 0 array the other day and they work fine as expected, but on spinup (or when accessing data after a while) they make a brief terrible vibrating noise like dragging a wooden table on the floor for half a second. Not sure if this is normal, but they seem to work just fine.

Other Thoughts: Have 9 more on the way, hopefully they prove to be reliable.

5 out of 5 eggsMassive size

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Huge capacity, seems quiet (can't hear it over the other room noise), and it's as fast as I need it to be.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: I've ripped 175 of my DVDs and I'm only using about 1.3 TB, plenty of space left, I may rip some of my Blu Rays. Drive will eventually end up in an HTPC. If you get one, make sure to set it as a GPT disk instead of MBR or you won't see the full capacity in Windows.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent value

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Price - $299 for 6TB is hard to ignore
Performance - for a consumer drive is excellent. I placed 2 of them in my G-Technology thunderbolt enclosure in RAID0 and am achieving 288MB/sec writes and 296MB/sec reads on my Mac Mini.
Noise - exceptionally quiet for a large capacity drive

Cons: As others have mentioned, the middle mounting hole is missing which can be quite a challenge. I suspect that Seagate simply ran out of space. Spin up time also appears to be longer than normal.

5 out of 5 eggsSTDB6000100

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Works so far, Big capacity and a fair amount of speed for a platter drive

Cons: Funky mounting holes

Other Thoughts: This disk drive is a Mechanical Hog, you call tell by the way the case is cut that they used Every bit of space in the 3.5" form factor to stuff all 6 platters in this thing, other than that i can find no real fault with it, just bear in mind if you are using a NAS or Hot swap bay that the holes for the center side aren't there. i knew about the hole issue before buying so it wasn't a big deal

4 out of 5 eggsScrew placement slightly off

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Huge storage size! Works great -- if it fits!

Cons: The side screws are slightly higher from the bottom of the drive than standard hard drive dimensions. If you install the drive in something that has a bottom piece sized to accommodate a standard drive, that could be a problem. I have a Synology, and had a tough time screwing the drives into their bay cartridges. I was able to do it with a little effort and with the bottom of the plastic cartridges bowing a bit, but if you're putting the drive in something less flexible, look elsewhere!

Other Thoughts: I'm dinging it 1 star for the size issues. Other than that, the drive has been perfect so far.

2 out of 5 eggsCan be a problem installing in a Mac Pro

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Size is hug enough to accommodate my media library which is why I bought it in the first place. I like the drive as a whole.

Cons: I was elated about receiving the drive that was meant to house all my Media files in lieu of a RAID box. The shocked with dismay when I tried to install the drive in my Mac Pro (3,1 2008) using the HDD Sled. The placement of the screw holes on the drive have been changed. Bow rear 2 of the bottom holes have been moved back. I ended up drilling a hole in the sled in order to affix the drive to the sled at 3 points. The hight of the screw that the Mac uses makes inserting and removing the drive a very tight fit. Not an elegant solution but it works. If Your are a MAX USER ENSURE THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH UNCONVENTIONAL INSTALLATION IN THE MACHINE. Another alternative is to install it in one of the optical drives using 5.35. to 3.5 adapter & one of the the onboard SATA connectors. That is a note elaborate installation which I may do whine I get the necessary tools from OWC.

For non-MAC users there is also another change, the side screw have also even been reduced from 6 to 4, removing the ones in the middle.

Why did Seagate change the placement of these installation holes, beats me. It is the only drive I have seen like this including the last 2 Seagate SSDH drives a bought just few months ago.

Other Thoughts: I was tempted to call NewEgg to return it because of the incompatibility but decided it to keep it and improvise a work around. Seagate lists this drive as compatible with MAC, aim sure they mean the OS because it is definitely HARDWARE INCOMPATIBLE with MacPro. This is the no-enterprise version, whether the enterprise version has the same problem I am not sure.
