5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Great price, excellent speed, and massive storage.

Cons: Not actually 6TB, but this is a known issue. :)

Other Thoughts: Make sure you download Seagate's DiscWizard from their website if you want to be able to use the entire drive. It will setup the hard drive space and then you can access it through Windows Administrative tools, Disk Management.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: They appeared to be a good price

Cons: I used to view WD and Seagate as being comparable products. But early this year I had to replace six 3 & 4 TB drives. One failed outright and the others all showed abnormally high error rates.

After reviewing current feedback on Seagate drives I dropped over a $1000 to buy Hitachi drives.

Other Thoughts: It turned out that Seagate cost me a grand to replace their junk drives and much more to pay employees to recover & transfer data.

Seagate claims "supported by 30 years of trusted performance, reliability and simplicity."

Clearly this statement is no longer true.

3 out of 5 eggsI had difficulties, but it works

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: High capacity for the price. Seagate is a strong brand.

Cons: As some others mentioned, my drive also had incorrectly placed mounting holes. they were too high by about 2mm. I had to tilt the drive at an angle to get a screw in and could only get 1 screw to fit. I taped the rest of the drive down with electrical tape. The drive worked fine upon first boot. Copied 200gb of random files, but after that the transfer speed dropped to 0 and would not copy files. There was some unknown problem with writing files, but I did not have trouble reading files, except for one read error trying to open a file but I could not reproduce the error. Did some disk checks using Seatools with no problems but still wouldn't work. Checked for new firmware but none exists as of 10-10-14. Put the computer in sleep mode and tried again the next day and the drive copied files perfectly. I can't explain what happened but all of a sudden it just felt like working. I've had great experience with Seagate, all my drives are Seagate, but I've never had these problems. I deduct 1 egg for the mounting hole problem and another egg for the problem with writing files.

Other Thoughts: The drive temp is on the high side (90c) compared to 5 other Seagate drives in my rig, but overall it's within range. Overall it's a great drive but Seagate did a half-azzed job compared to the years of great experience I've had with other drives. Failing to follow the standards for mounting hole placement is ridiculous and unacceptable that Seagate slipped up. I would expect this from a junky, unknown brand but not Seagate.

3 out of 5 eggsPrice is too much

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: High Capacity drive that performs as expected.
Not a lot of heat and quiet.

Cons: Overpriced compared to 4 TB drives.
Price should go down the more you buy.
Technology is to new to guarantee reliability because it is based off writing to the same space twice after copying original data. Also makes writes slower.

Other Thoughts: You can buy 3 4 TB drives for around $123 dollars less depending on what day it is. This is no sale even with a code.
SSD's are coming down in price, take up less space, use less energy and are incredible fast so Seagate and others have to make higher capacity drives using a technology that slows down the write process and uses have the space already written to.

Unless you are in dire need of space then I would wait for a PROPER sale, shop around or till the price drops sharply.
Price per TB seems high when you want a 1TB, 2TB and 3TB then you have a reasonable 4TB then have to pay extra for a 6TB as if they are giving you a deal.
CPU's, Hard Drives and Memory are actually commodities and should go up and down based on market.
NEWEGG is not a store front where they have to pay for all the extras yet price as if they were Tiger Direct.
Believe me, they are still making money despite free shipping and handling.

1 out of 5 eggs1 of 2 DOA

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Unknown

Cons: 1 of 2 drives ordered was DOA.

Other Thoughts: DOA is indicative of reduced/poor factory testing, unfortunately our client chose these cheaper drives as part of a custom order. Prefer WD Black or enterprise drives.

3 out of 5 eggsFast but odd

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Quite fast. Fresh I'm seeing up around 200MB/sec

Cons: I have two identical 6TB drives. I get random grinding/seek noises on both drives. Reminds me of a 3.5" floppy seek. Seems to happen more when the computer is idle. I remember that my 3TB seagate drives from a few years back beeped and a firmware fixed it. Maybe this is bad firmware?

4 out of 5 eggsSetting Up Seagate 6 TB Hard Drive

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Quiet, large capacity, includes cables and mounting screws.

Cons: Cannot use Seagate Disk Wizard or Acronis True Image software to install this hard drive on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit system: was not being recognized by the software as larger than 2 TB. Called Seagate and we found that you have to use the Windows Disk Management software to initialize the disk. Once you do that, then the Acronis and Seagate Disk Wizard recognizes the disk fully. Seagate said that they will likely update their software to accommodate this product. The SeaTools for Windows does not recognize this disk before or after initialization through Windows Disk Manager.

3 out of 5 eggsGood capacity

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Good capacity, decent price (for a new product that is).

Cons: Perhaps not the best HDD for some RAID cards because its 'green' settings may be interpreted as 'dropping off-line' by some Adaptecs, Promise and LHIs.

Other Thoughts: I am not upset with the 4-hole instead of standard 6-hole screw-ins because I don't dripple or drop-kick these PCs. If you are using these drives as part of a ball-playing product, then perhaps these drives can flap around, but "use plastic tie-downs" might solve that problem. I think if you're shooting threes with these computers from the top of the arc, longevity of a productive PC will be subjected to many other forces - not a lack of screw-holes.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: High-capacity per drive for a reasonable cost given their new introduction. All four purchased worked out of the box without issue.

Cons: New, thus unproven drives. Newegg pre-released these disks such that Seagate wouldn't even share a spec sheet yet.

Other Thoughts: The introduction of an economy 6TB drive was very attractive as it allowed me to double my storage array (built from previous 3TB drive) without having to increase my enclosure space. It remains to be seen how reliable these units are going to be, but (unlike others) I have had a good experience with Seagate drives in this product line.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Compatible

This review is from: Seagate STBD6000100 6TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Capacity

Cons: Low Compatibility - I bought this drive to go into my Seagate Black Armor NAS and found out it wasn't compatible I took a chance as I knew that the online list was outdated (my 4tb Seagate drives worked just fine). Well they didnt work. Now I'm looking for an external drive enclosure and it appears that most max out at 4tb. Looks like it's going in the PC.
