5 out of 5 eggsSix out of six still going strong after six months

Pros: Huge capacity. No problems in my FreeNAS machine: not a single SMART error.

Cons: The only con I can think of is the "missing" center screw hole, but that is inevitable given the number of platters packed into this small space. I can drill extra holes in my drive trays to match the new arrangement of screw holes in the drives.

I wish I'd bought more at the time.

Other Thoughts: The drives themselves are labeled as ST6000DX000, whereas the 6TB "bare" drives are ST6000DM001. Are they actually different? I have no idea: I haven't found any information for the ST6000DX000 on the Seagate Web site.

I bought these when they were ridiculously cheap for four hours on the Web site of one of the big B&M store chains. Keep a lookout, and maybe they'll repeat it.

1 out of 5 eggsFragile

Pros: When working, it works as well as any hard drive I suppose. Nothing in particular stands out on them.

Cons: Poor construction on the connectors. one of the connectors for the SATA cable just came right off and stuck inside the SATA cable. This was just from unplugging and plugging it in a few times. I plugged it in initially, used it for a while, then had to unplug it and replug it in when I upgraded my motherboard. When I unplugged it though, the connector came right off with the cable. There is no reason why a hard drive should come apart after a few plug-ins, especially when someone treats them as gently as I treat hardware.

1 out of 5 eggsDirve Failed in less than 6 months

Pros: It arrived, it worked.

Cons: stopped working after 6 months. NTFS files system got corrupted somehow....

Technically the drive is still "functional", as after a complete format it and file system restoration I can use it again.

However I am trying to recover my data first

Other Thoughts: Peanut butter Jelly time!

1 out of 5 eggsBummed.

Pros: A fairly reasonable price.

Cons: I only had issues with the drive from the first moment I tried installing it. It was recognized by the BIOS without issue, but no matter what I did it would freeze windows at startup whenever it was plugged in. After formatting with UBCD I was able to see it in windows, but it would have constant errors when trying to write. Had to RMA.

Other Thoughts: I've always had great luck when it came to Seagate and this is my first bum drive from them. In other places online I've seen people have similar issues with the 6TB version.

2 out of 5 eggsFailures

Pros: These are pretty cheap. If you can get a large number of them and format it with a reliable file system like BTRFS, ZFS, or ReFS, then your data is probably going to be safe relative to getting a pricier, but more reliable drive of a same capacity.

Cons: Apparently, they have a high failure rate. Maybe I got a bad batch, but two out of the three drives that I bought less than 8 months ago have practically failed since my system doesn't boot properly with them plugged in. The last one is reporting a lot of hardware-corrected errors, but is still functional enough to read and write. All three of the drives reported temperatures about 9–20° C higher than the other drives in my case.

5 out of 5 eggsStorage Drive

Pros: So far so good, just using it as storage and to edit 4k and 5k footage through a esata dock. Haven't had any problems and it seems to be fast enough.

Cons: Not seen any yet but update if drive crashes or we start having issues.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: I have zero issues with this drive as I have had no problems with Seagate drives. There are a lot of people out there who seemed to have issues with Seagate, I have not had any. Seagate is all I buy. I own about 6 drives from Seagate.

Cons: Price!! Still too expensive.

Other Thoughts: Now watch me have issues since I said I haven't had any.

5 out of 5 eggsSTBD6000100 6 TB drive review

Pros: Working fine now but read the "Other Thoughts" for the strange issue I had. Consistently getting 125 to 150 MB/sec transfer rates in real life and up to 200 MB/sec with HD Tune Pro.

Cons: The mounting arrangement is not an issue in my enclosure so that is not a negative to me but others have complained about it so be sure and be aware of the particulars.

Other Thoughts: I bought one a number of months ago and the installation was one of the easiest I have had and has worked well so I recently bought two more and installed them and all seemed OK until I started to transfer data and it was excruciatingly slow. In some cases the write rates were in the single MB/s range when I was expecting at least 100 MB/s. I did some testing with HD Tune Pro and sure enough the first drive had test transfer rates of just under 200 MB/s for blocks of over 512 byte. And as expected the reads were slightly higher than the writes. And windows routinely reported real world sustained reads and writes of 120 to 145 MB/s.

On the other hand the new drives reported extremely low write rates and HD Tune Pro also showed that while the read rate were around 150 MB/s the write rates peaked around 65-128 byte blocks at below 150 then fell from there to low double digits by 8192 bytes which is probably where most large files would be. I tried switching controllers and SATA ports and the results were nearly the same. In desperation I deleted the partitions with Windows' Disk Management, rebooted and then created new partition(s) and retested with HD Tune Pro and now they all preform nearly identically. I have no idea what happened the first time because I think I created the new disks, GPT and the partitions the same way with Disk Manager but they all doing well now. If anyone has any idea about what I experienced I would appreciate a note.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good.

Pros: Replaced 3 old 2tb disks and freed up space in my computer. Less heat too.

Cons: The weird mounting holes, but on the bright side I was prepared for this having read the reviews before buying.

Other Thoughts: A few years ago I was leary of buying 2TB disks, but I've had several now for a few years without incident. I've had my share of DOA's, regardless of brand, but after replacement have a normal life expectancy. So far so good with this disk.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed SeaTools Long Generic

Pros: Largest single Seagate internal drive currently available without removing the 8Gb drive from the Backup Plus enclosure; on sale for an ok price.

Cons: Initialized as GPT, 1 partition, NTFS.Tested in an external sata docking bay. It felt and was running hot, 48C; most of my other Seagate drives run 36C, but it cooled ok with a fan directed at it. So I ran SeaTools for Windows, and it passed all the tests until I ran the Long Generic (8 hours), which it Failed. It cost $15 to return, and takes time.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to run the Long Generic test. I sometimes don't bother if the shorter tests pass, but something vaguely didn't sound/feel right about this drive. Now I will always run the Long Generic, or Fix All Long. It was double boxed nicely, but a hole was punched in the outer box, so maybe rough handling...
