This review is from: Seagate STDD100 Diskless System NAS Pro 2-Bay Network Storage

Pros: - Arrived very quickly from Newegg. Item was well packed.
- NAS is quite small and is nicely designed.
- Quiet and it does not get very warm with use.
- 2 x 2 TB NAS grade Hard Drives. Intel 64 bit 1.7 GHz dual core processor with 2 GB of memory. Pretty simple plug-n-play operation. I simply turned on the power and let the NAS alone for 10 minutes so it could initialize. I pointed my browser to http://discover.seagate.com and followed the onscreen instructions to complete the setup. After that the device was ready to use. Included printed material is only designed to guide you through the initial setup. Extensive documentation and instruction material is available on Seagate website. All instructions are clear and easy to follow.
- With default setting the NAS will set up to RAID 1. Meaning, you will have 2 TB of storage. Both disks will mirror each other for maximum data safety.
- I switched my setup to RAID 0, which required that both drives be deleted before RAID 0 could be setup. To save time, I suggest users decide which RAID setup they want before dumping data into the NAS.
- This 2 HD NAS is capable of RAID 0, 1 and JBOD (Just Bunch of Disks, which is basically RAID 0 with no data stripping across drives).
- Dual Gigabit ports support link aggregation. Supported routers will allow this NAS to connect to a network with up to 2 Gb/s speeds. Although these speeds are well above theoretical output of enclosed drives.
- One year of antivirus service is included. The service activates once you install the add app. In my testing the add-on antivirus app had no detectable impact on NAS performance.
- Network Video Recording supporting up to 4 IP camera licenses (includes 1 free camera license), with mobile app and surveillance client.
- 2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 allow attachment of external hard drives partitioned for Windows (NFTS) , MAC (HFS+) , Linux (EXT2, EXT3, EXT4) and FAT32
- DLNA streaming and iTunes media serves work correctly.
- Remote access from outside of local network via SDrive app. All date leaving local network is encrypted.
- Easy creation and management of shares, users and groups. Ability to map shares as network drives.
- Ability manage on/off times (schedule). I set up my NAS to wake up at certain time and go to standby at certain time each day of the week. Generous 3 year warranty.
- There are several free “apps” available for download to enhance the device (ie, antivirus app, NVT surveillance app, Bit Torrent app, etc.

Cons: - 2 bay NAS gives you very limited options to expand storage. Since both bays are already occupied, the only option left is to replace existing hard drives.
- 4 bay models offer additional RAID options and expanded storage.
- Even though the NAS has multitude of nice options and higher end features, the NAS is quite expensive for what it offers.
- I had to give it a few tries before the SDrive app on my iPhone worked. Even then, the access SDrive over ATT wireless network is quite slow.

Other Thoughts: I was looking for a Network Attached Storage solution for my home network. My goals were to be able to securely store mostly multimedia files like music, photos, videos and home movies. I also wanted to be able set up central iTunes server and I wanted to be able to stream movies to my various devices on home network. Security and low power use were also important. Seagate STDD4000100 runs Linux based Seagate NAS OS 4 which sports multiple security features and various encryption options. Seagate is a major player in the storage area. I believe NAS OS will be further developed and updated for the foreseeable future. Under normal operation, this NAS uses about 44 W of energy, which is not too much. I have had Seagate STDD4000100 for about a month. I find this NAS very reliable and trustworthy. I have not experienced any crashes or random behavior. I transferred and store about 2.5 TB of data on this device without any issues. Anytime I am on my home network and use my PC, MAC or iOS device I have reliable access to my files. Seagate STDD4000100 is not the cheapest NAS solution available, but I find it reliable and trustworthy.
